2020 Rallying Thread (WRC, ERC and national rally)
Discussion
A few photos from a hillclimb here last weekend, the Ben Nevis 'Golden 1200' (the top of the hillclimb being at 1200m altitude). Its the first time they have run this event and Hayden Paddon was a driving force in organising it (as well as winning it, predictably enough). Great bit of road in a nice part of the country. Interesting range of vehicles competing - typical rally machinery and motorbikes, quads, ATVs through to the 600+bhp unlimted class cars.

Saw a bit of the coverage on instagram, both Paddon & Bamber were there - I do think more of those type of events are needed, especially in the UK; rallysprints, gravel hillclimbs, etc
No road miles, one car can be shared by two drivers, one 'stage' used. We used to have a few in the UK - Haye Park rallysprint, the Sweetlamb rallysprint, and originally, the Malton Forest Rally was a Rallysprint.
I've often thought a Rallysprint series would/could be a fabulous thing; you could even run a 2 dayer at somewere like Walters Arena as there are loads of different roads in there.
As for Rally Mexico, it wasn't a real surprise - and Ogier didn't even think it should have started.
In this time of little sport, I had to chuckle, it couldn't even get a mention on the 5Live sports news, when other 'minority' sports actually got a rare mention.

We still have them, they're called comp safaris. More offroad biased than a pure rally but they still use venues like Sweet Lamb and have everything from bog standard Freelanders to 400+ bhp prototypes competing. I don't know why the rally version wasn't popular, competitors moan about costs, organisers gave a cheaper alternative and they weren't interested. yep couldn't agree more. The new closed road regs I think would allow for some creativity, 10 miles hill climbs, time trials and rally sprints. Make the route a loop so you end up somewhere near where you started, base it in a town with some facilities and you could have a great event for competitors and locals. No road miles, one car can be shared by two drivers, one 'stage' used. my current dream projects are a time trial starting and finishing in Callander using the road around the lakes/forest, and a time trial starting and finishing in Harrogate using the roads around Fewston.

Apparently Lappi's Fiesta had done 4 events, and was a new build for Evans in GB!
It's been confirmed by the TV chopper crew that Neuville missed the dog, and it was seen running around afterwards! Shame the car let Thierry down later, as he was going well given his road position.
I can’t think Richard Millener will have been impressed with Lappi’s handling of the situation. Definitely not his finest hour, irrespective of whether he could see the fire or not. It's been confirmed by the TV chopper crew that Neuville missed the dog, and it was seen running around afterwards! Lappi seems to have lost the plot this season.

yep you're not wrong. In the ARDS test it asks you what you should do if your car is on fire and the answer is locate a fire Marshall if possible and vacate the car. Yet Lappi drove away from people actively trying to put out the fire. A bit of a dick move really.Lappi seems to have lost the plot this season.

I’m struggling to work out how he thought it would end ??
I understood the getting the car away from the stop line once the extinguishers had been exhausted, but not fanning the flames by driving on! I know it's easy to say when not in a panic, but surely it was better to wait for the following crews? I did think though that it took a scary amount of time for a fire crew to arrive on the scene, it seems they were spread quite thinly between stages, given the following one had to be cancelled.
Anyway, solid win for Ogier. Did the job using his road position and never looked like being beaten. Elfyn also did a decent job, given he was sweeping the road.

How are things motorsport wise in your part of the world? We have nothing for the next couple months, which is understandable given the circumstances.
Same here really, I think they're making decisions a month at a time but everything is off at the moment. Same with all other sports etc too, any gathering over 100 people is a no go.We're still only in double figures for number of covid cases detected last I heard, but I'm sure it will boom pretty rapidly like everywhere else. Our Govt is pretty bloody useless and did bugger all to even try and keep it out, as a relatively remote island country we probably could have kept borders secure if they had made an early decisive call instead of waiting until it was already here to act.
NW Stages now officially cancelled for 2020
"Legend Fires North West Stages Date
After careful consideration the event management team has come to the decision that the next Legend Fires North West Stages will take place in March 2021.
When the 2020 event was first postponed the organisers gave serious thought to identifying a date in September / October 2020. Despite a very congested calendar there appeared to be one possible option in mid-October. However, at this point in time, we do not feel that the logistics of organising an event in that timescale make this a tenable proposition and so the 2020 Legend Fires North West Stages is now cancelled.
As organisers we are not only required to follow the legal closed road application timetable, but we would also need to be re-starting the resident consultation process in the next month which would not follow the current social distancing guidelines and we should be attending council meetings which we assume will be suspended for the foreseeable future. Also, and most significantly, if we ran an event in October 2020, we would not have the time or resource to run another event in March 2021 and so would risk losing our anniversary date.
We also had to consider the re-scheduling of other rallies for the rest of the year. No one knows how long these restrictions will go on for, which events will still run and whether championships will continue for 2020, hence the final decision to abandon thoughts of running the event in 2020.
We understand that this will be a disappointment to some of the organising team, competitors, sponsors and spectators, but we have to be pragmatic and look at the long-term future of our event. When organisation of the 2020 event started, no one could have predicted the dire situation we find ourselves in and the knock-on effect that this virus is having on all parts of our lives, including all sporting events.
In order to protect the event financially we made the tough decision to postpone in advance of any Government or Motorsport UK directive. It is now clear that it was absolutely the right decision.
The last couple of weeks have been a challenging time for the organising team and we would like to thank the many people who have supported the difficult decisions we have had to make."

When were the WRC Mexico highlights shown on ITV4 ?.....if at all
Supposed to be 10.30pm on Tuesday ,after some snooker ,which I guess wasn't on either ,there was a Hulk film on
when I tuned in to watch....
The WRC Mexico could have been one of the last major sporting events for some time ,everything else
has been canned till further notice.

So surprise to see Motorsport Uk extend the ban until at least the end of June. Here's a few videos to fill some time stuck at home!

It was to be expected I think. Gigs and other events in June/July are already being cancelled. Some entire motorsport championships have been canned too eg the SRC. I think many events will not bother rescheduling, even if rallying can start in July there's going to be three months of events to fit in on top of an already crowded calendar. And I'm not sure there'll be enough medics/rescue available given many work in the NHS and will be in need of a rest once the virus is sorted. Competitors and marshals could well be struggling for money if their work has been affected too. VHS Rallies You Tube is running nightly Top Gear Rally Reports this week if anyone needs some Willy Woollard action!
