RE: V8 Jaguar XF Racer Makes Competitive Debut
Discussion
To offer some perspective on th series this car is racing in:
I was most fortunate to see the Superstar series at Magione earlier this year. It caters for big V8 engined touring cars. The E60 is actually a 550i but the E39 is an M5. The race we saw featured Maserati Quattroporte, Chrysler 300C, BMW E90 M3, Jaguar S-Type, Mercedes C63 among its ranks. The race ended with a battle royale between Gianni Morbidelli in the M3 and Pierluigi Martini in the 300C. Martini won but it was frantic stuff with stunning driving from both.
I have seen Class 1 ITC, modern DTM, Super Touring and modern BTCC among contemporary saloon racing in the last 20 years and Superstars is up there with the very best championships for great racing and spectacular cars. The late-1990s were heady days for the BTCC but the cars after 1995 were very aero-dependent and not as much fun to watch as the Superstars machines. Nor did they sound anywhere near as good. These are the only pics I currently have hosted, but will post up more if they're of interest.

It's a Jag therefore I want it to win, but pretty? Not from where I'm sitting.
The regular XF is only just starting to grow on me, but this looks all wrong.
Having stared a while longer it's definitely not helped by the Italian colours. Racings jags need to British Racing Green, not that fetid colour.
Yeah, would be nice to see it in a proper green.. The regular XF is only just starting to grow on me, but this looks all wrong.

It was to do with how the colour appeared on TV screens - just like everything else in F1.

I had vaguely heard of this series but did not know too much about it until now. IMO, it should be the template for a pan European DTM, rather than the aero dominated 2 manufacturer prototype series we have now.
Would be nice to see more manufacturers in the DTM, but their cars are a world of sophistication ahead of Superstars and I suspect that's how Audi and Mercedes want it and like it. They're much quicker as well. However, Superstars cars move around plenty and make the right noises. The supercharger whine on the S-Type was amazing. Plenty of scope for both series co-existing anyway. GingerWizard said:

The Primera had the most potent BTCC 2 litre 4 pot ever, 325Bhp if EDL are to be believed.
at 14,000rpm?IIRC, the Nissan produced close on that figure, which was allegedly 5bhp better than the best of the rest - which was the reverse-headed Vauxhall/Opel lump.
Talking to a friend who worked for Jan Odor (Janspeed as was), there was much talk about certain Volvo's that produced more on occaision, and it was deemed to be down to some "stuff that *might* have fallen into the tank accidently, perhaps" which resulted in some internal damage consistent with "drug abuse".
Back to the XF. Mmmmmmm nice.
Why don't we have a series like that in the UK. Why is it the Italians, who have no home-grown big-bangers, doing it? Says a lot for the Italian automotive market when one of their most successful (in terms of spectator appeal) racing championships is for cars they don't make at home.

If Superstars cars "move around more & make the right noises" then maybe they would be more attractive to spectators & TV &, due to their lower sophistication, cheaper to run. It would seem that privateers could also develop & run their own versions. All to the good, I would say.
Is it on TV?

Have done some more googling around.
Its on Motors TV:
http://www.motorstv.com/car/touring/superstars-cha...
From Wiki: The Campionato Italiano Superstars ("Italian Superstars Championship") is a production-based touring car racing championship held since 2004. It is sanctioned by the Automobile Club d'Italia (ACI) and the Commissione Sportiva Automobilistica Italiana (CSAI).[1] Only V8 engined cars are eligible. Since its inception, it has replaced the Italian Superturismo Championship as the main tin-top auto racing series of the country. Originally based in Italy, the series stated to visit circuits in other European countries in 2007 and in the same year a parallel international series, the International Superstars Series, was added.
From the Official Website:
ABSTRACT OF THE TECHNICAL REGULATIONS:
The SUPERSTARS Philosophy. The Technical Regulation has been studied in order to achieve the following:
•Maximise racing action
•Minimise tuning costs
•Equalise the performance of different Car Models
The Cars The SUPERSTARS Championship is reserved for production cars with the following basic characteristics:
•3001 to 7000 cc engines
•V8
•4 doors
ORAL Engineering. ORAL is an internationally recognised Engineering company created by former Ferrari F1 Technical Director Mauro Forghieri. ORAL Engineering manages the Championship’s Technical Regulation in collaboration with the National Sporting Authority (CSAI) and monitors performances during the racing week-ends
The "Specific Kit". In order to ensure equilibrated performances between different Car Models, the Technical Regulation contains a "Kit" section describing the elements which can be modified on specific Models. This allows Tuners to achieve elevated performances with any Car Model at accessible costs
The "Mono-Kit". The following elements are compulsory for all cars:
•Pirelli Tyres
•Braking kit
•Rear wing
Eligible cars include: Audi RS4 & 6, BMW 3 & 5 Series, Cadillac CTS-V, HSV/ Vauxhall Monaro, Jaguar S Type & XF, Maserati Quattroporte, Mercedes C63 etc
