Had Loeb not won the Swedish, I'd have agreed with some of the sentiments expressed above. But of all the rallies, perhaps this one is truer to its roots - after all, a snowy stage is a snowy stage...
It's a bit like saying Schumacher doesn't deserve his status as perhaps the best driver ever to grace F1 because he didn't drive on the old 'Ring, or tame a 1200 bhp Williams Honda.
Excellent thread isn't it? Lots of valid comments and very interesting

I see what you mean - the Swedish and the Finnish are the last two great rallies left. We'll see after the Finnish next month...
I still think Gronholm has a speed advantage over Loeb, but he has to push so hard these days that he makes mistakes. Unfortunately he also makes a lot of schoolboy errors, which have dented his reputation over the last couple of seasons.
Thinking of great rally drivers, that Tommi Makinen fellow was fairly handy, as I rememeber.

I think that Gronholm's errors have come with him needing to totally animal the car to get anything out of it - leaving nothing in reserve. He is a brilliant driver (as all the WRC drivers are).
Agreed...anyone who saw Gronholm in the 206 will realise what he's capable of in a good car...and I echo the comments above that say it's his skill alone that's giving Peugeot podiums with the 307.
There are three "GREAT" WRC drivers at the moment - Loeb, Gronholm, Solberg. Everyone else is just playing for 4th place. Is any of them as great as the legends of the past? Mikkula, Rorhl, Makkinen? Perhaps. I think all 3 are close...but can't really be sure, cars and character of rallies are too different now.

What you need to do is look at wins against races, excluding races where the driver didn't finish due to mechanical failiure.
Easy........
1.Ascari = 76.5%
2.Fangio = 54.6%
3.Clark = 53.2%
4.Schumacher = 47.5%
5.Stewart = 45.7%
6.Senna = 43.6%
7.Prost = 36.9%
8.Lauda = 35.2%
9.Hakkinen = 31.0%
10.Brabham = 27.2%
11.Piquet = 19.6%
12.Fittipaldi = 19.4%
13.Hill,G = 14.1%

I now have images of aeropilot being overweight, greasy-haired and tragically dressed...but this time wearing flying goggles instead of round specs!!! Thankfully the coffee was on the desk when i read it.
(Apologies to a-p...it's all ruby's fault, honest!!!)
