Another test day yesterday. First time he has had a good go in the car in the dry. Not a lot of other cars there either, so we got plenty of runs in. He has some video to upload but I don't think it's worked that well with the bright sunlight.

Tyres certainly got worked hard!

They certainly do! I think we might yet sneak in under or original estimate of £10k for the first season if we can avoid any major catastrophe with the car.

Test day number 2 uploaded. Camera position isn't the greatest but I think (biased though) it shows good improvement in his gear changing. He's using heel & toe on the downshifts.

Try and get him to shuffle the wheel less. It's very easy to get confused where the wheels are pointing if you move your hands so much.
An excellent point, thanks. He actually pulled himself up on it when watching back all the videos from the day, so yes, something to keep a watch on the next time we are out.

I used to know a lad in the AA who had a border collie from a puppy who had a straight black/white line down her face. Had to give her up, though.

Hmmmnn... Name doesn't start with M, but we got her as a rescue dog with no known history. Had her 4 years now. They thought she was around 2 when we get her.

Supposed to be doing an autotest today and his BARS test tomorrow. Both have been cancelled due to the weather.

We made £240 back on the costs selling the old seats and belts though.

Jack has his BARS test this morning and another Autotest this afternoon. Car will also be getting it's MSA logbook.

Pleased to report the BARS test was passed and he now holds a junior MSA Licence.

A nice little confidence boost in the afternoon Autotest too. He got 3 trophies. Fastest in section 1, fastest in section 2/3 and fastest junior time of the day!

Round 1 of the Junior Rally championship this weekend at Ingliston. Seems like only yesterday that Jack had his first drive in the car!

We fitted new driveshafts (£100) to the car in preperation and while under the car noticed the drive belts (Warter pump, Alternator etc.) looked in pretty poor condition so we replaced those too (£25)

Total spend getting us to this point is £6990.00. Add on the fee for this weekends event and we are at £7240.00.

Expensive, but we were starting from scratch. We are loving every minute of it.

Thanks. Jack's co-driver was navigating in a Mk1 Escort - they finished as quickest 2 wheel drive on the Saturday.

Our first weekend now done and dusted. A quick run down: -

13 Juniors had entered. 8 have done a couple of seasons already. of the remaining 5 classed as rookies, 2 had completed a rally or 2 last season. 3 completely new including Jack.

He was seeded 9th which surprised us a bit. car behind him was faster with a driver that had experience. Not sure how that happened. The Lad seeded 12th had to withdraw. Licence issues.

Results wise, he was running 11th after the first couple of stages but pulled it back to 10th after stage 4. Finished 9th with the help of a retirement. So no great surprises. He knew he wasn't going out to win anything or be the fastest, but inwardly he was still a little disappointed with his times. Lots of encouragement from all around that he was doing well for his first time out and making steady progress as the day went on.

Really pleased the car made it through the day unscathed (other than the scrapes of a hay bale all down one side, but nothing bent or broken smile ). We did have a bit of an issue the end of stage 6. Just before the end, there was a small jump - he landed well, but hard. 100 yards later, at the finish line the car stopped. Electrics completely dead. A push back to the service area cut into our 20 minutes before the next stage. I was checking battery connections, fuses, relays but not really getting anywhere when two guys from another team came running over and helped find a dodgy connection. car then started but wouldn't stay running. another couple of minutes and they had that sorted - so a big thanks to them (Team JMR), We couldn't have finished the day without them.

Big thanks also to his navigator - keeping us right all the way from scrutineering til the end of the day.

Costs - £40 championship entry fee and around £20 fuel for the car and £40 travel / food.

Another Autotest done for some seat time before the Kames rally next weekend. Cost wise, £15 fee and £20 travel.

He has uploaded a couple of quick videos of the Autotest. Great fun for £15. Would recommend for any junior wanting to get involved in Motorsport.

Highs and lows yesterday for round 2 of the Junior Ecosse Challenge.

Seeded 11th with 14 starters. 16 stages.

By stage 12 he had battled up to 5th place (helped with a couple of broken driveshafts from the faster, more experienced lads).

At the end of stage 13, the car was visibly slower and had a distinctive bottom end knock.

Got the car back in the queue for stage 14 while debating if it should actually go back out (he desperately wanted to finish the day). Sort of thinking he could back off a bit on the final stages and nurse it home for a finish, the car cut out a couple of times while waiting and then refused to even turn over!

A disappointing end to an exciting day. Lots of positives to take away though.

I don't really know enough about what I'm doing to teach him to re-build an engine!

Maybe time for us both to learn.

It's been a hectic few weeks since the last update, and quite a hit on the budget!

It's a steep learning curve for both Jack driving and me in service.

At Leuchars, early in the day the exhaust got caught on a kerb on the way to start stage 2. Due to other problems out on the stage we had a 15 minute 'emergency' service to patch him up and get him back out. Thanks to a loan of a grinder from another team, we managed to chop the mangled exhaust up and at least re-fit the back box under the middle of the car! At least he finished the day after the disappointment of Kames

Crail passed relatively incident free with another finish.

We have a bit of a break now until the next rally at Solway but a busy month none the less. Test night this week with a training day at the weekend and a further 1 to 1 training day the following weekend.

I've splurged a bit on some new tools too, learning as I go what we need in Service.
Bought a new High Lift, low entry Jack £260. A battery powered grinder £70 for the bare unit. (i have batteries already) and a whole selection of sundries including Jubilee clips of all sizes, a selection box of Tek screws, some cutting discs, gloves etc..

Thanks.

We smashed through the projected budget and I eventually stopped counting. Lol.

But I now have a proper selection of service tools and a fighting chance wiyh knowledge gained to keep him running.

We built a Yaris rally car over the winter (build thread to come) and actually today just sold the Micra.

Two events into this season already. 4th place in the Scottish championship at Ingliston and he was running 4th at RM Condor last week when the Diff exploded and put a few holes invthe Gearbox!

Its been a fantastic journey and i would urge anyone to give it a go. It can be done much cheaper than i have done it.
