As Patrick Head said of him, he didn't understand that to finish first you first have to finish. He's too inconsistent to be a top level F1 driver, and he's his own biggest fan, never a good thing. The radio conversation he had with his pit crew when he claimed they had favoured Ralph always makes me laugh, he called them w4nkers only for them to tell him he was the w4anker!

He's overrated and dangerous, I'm very pleased we'll see him out of F1, to be honest. It's a sport with enough challenges to the drivers as it is, without them having to worry about what dangerous move Montoya will make next. Good riddance.

Absolutely on the money, for entertaining read dangerous, for winner read over-rated, for good fun read fat arrogant b******!

He is off to NASCAR because nobody in F1 wants him after blowing winning chances in leading teams. Dennis was mad to sign him in the first place. A competitive but limited talent nutcase should find his new discipline perfect.

Latest news is he's been dropped / reached a mutual agreement or whatever for the French GP! De la Rosa will step up, and I really hope Gary Paffet gets a chance now.

Laters Monty!

Funny, I remember him as getting closer than anyone else to winning a championship with a Williams-BMW, a heavily squandered waste of car and engine potential if there ever was one

Sadly Montoya is probably a victim of himself. From what I have heard he is incredibly arrogant and self centered and refuses to modify his lifestyle to succeed in the sport. I'm not talking about the odd night out, more the fact he eats rubbish and doesn't stay in as good shape as he should.

Also he allegedly is a total pain to deal with for his engineers.

...and ask any motoring hack and they'll tell you what a nice guy he is.

I think you're wrong - but then if your opinions like mine are based on having seen him race "in the flesh" as opposed to on the TV, I'll respect them.

Frank Williams doesn't hire idiots, nor does Ron Dennis (OK, OK so he did run Mark Blundell, but a man's allowed just one mistake in his life isn't he?

Ciao, Monty.

I'd like to say it's been fab, but I can't...

I was never for him joining Mclaren in the 1st place and am glad to see the back of him - he was a liability to the team.

Errr, not quite. Blundell did a sterling job (IMHO) in the MP4/wide arse taking over from the whinging moustachioed Brummie in his flat cap. Interestingly, Hakkinen was quite happy when they had to make the cockpit bigger to fit said Super mario's arse in as he could have a bigger steering wheel. Hakkinen finished 7th in the championship with 17 points and Blundell finished 10th with 13 points.

Not bad for a stand in.

The MP4 wasn't a very good car and Mansell was past his best.

I don't think Mansell's 'personality' suits McLaren. I'd consider the signing of him a mistake.

[pedant]

MP4/10. All post Dennis cars have the MP4 precursor, comes from his original company, Project 4, when they took over McLaren, hence the combination.

[/pedant]

But you're right, the MP4/10 was pig ugly and a box of crap.

Oh Andretti was well worth a punt - Marlboro sponsorship (pressure there from Philip Morris) and a track record that suggested he might cut it in F1 plus that surname...I bet his lack of success in the cockpit was more than compensated by the sponsorship income...plus this was the first year that McLaren were without their works Honda engines wasn't it? - ask FW what that means in terms of cashflow?

I think that at first Dennis thought he had a British world champ in DC, but then settled for having a safe pair of hands to back up his golden boy.

It's worth pointing out that Montoya has only won races in F1 because he has driven the best cars.
I did'nt think Damon Hill was a particularly outstanding driver in his day either, but he managed to win the championship.

But surely the Ferrari F2001/2/3/4 and the Renault R25 were the best cars over the years he drove in F1 - teh Williams and McLarens were capable of winning races, but not of sustaining a championship challenge.

I agree though, that Hill had the best car in 1996 (and arguably in 1994 & 1995 too); that, combined with his seat-time in that series of Williams - FW15 through to FW18 - was what won him the championship
