First indy race, wow!

14 hours at the track today, sat on corner 1 and it was a car magnet. On bus back to hotel now, really need a beer and time to digest.

20’ highlights package, for those of us who couldn’t stay up for the delayed race:

I didn't stay up to see the end, so I thought I would record the last 45 or so laps, of course the Sky planner wasn't showing it, instead it had 3 F1 programmes on but I selected record for each covering up to 1:15am.

This morning checked and the first programme started playing the race, then it was end of recording and I started the next programme in line, F1 show, the next and F1 show.

After a very tiring afternoon watching the F1 I nodded off after about 25 laps only to wake up with 10 laps to go. Probably the best going by what’s reported.

Apologies from a newbie pov, but Ive been watching INdy500 for a few years, but why is it only Chevrolet and Honda as the engine manufactures?
Seems like a poplar series.
No other manufacturers are interested; the series isn't popular enough to justify the expenditure required from them. Honda have been making noises about leaving the series. Aside from the Indy 500, viewer and spectator numbers just aren't high enough, hopefully that will change.
They're introducing the Hybrid engines in a few weeks time which might entice more companies to get involved but until the series grows in some way, and Roger Penske doesn't seem that interested in pushing for any sort of expansion, that won't happen. I'm not saying they need to go International, but as they said last night, Pato O'Ward is the most popular driver in the whole series, yet for some reason they STILL don't have a Mexican round? They could also be pushing for another race in Canada easily enough, but most people suspect and say what they really need is a new Chassis to go with the new Hybrid Engine. The current chassis is over a decade old with tweaks and the addition of the Aero screen here and there. A new, sleeker chassis with better integration of the aero screen would bring a lot of people in I think.

Sadly open wheel racing in the US still hasn't recovered to the levels prior to the Split after Tony George got all upset over the Indy 500 and CART and split to create the IRL.

Why would that make the slightest difference to fan engagement?

I was working till midnight, so when I got home I fast forwarded it and watched the race. Well watched the race till lap 61 when the recording stopped censored, never thought to do the next couple of program just in case, but that would appear not to have worked anyway.

30 minute highlights. I found a stream last night and saw from around lap 40 lap 100 or so. Tried to carry on this morning but all the full race streams had a banner blocking the middle of the screen, so I went with the highlights.

Oward probably scrubbed too much speed with that weaving. He is gutted again.
Pato had a massive run into T3 on lap 199 and backed out, he then made the pass on the main straight heading in to the final lap. I think he had the pass done before start finish so my thought is it was premeditated plan. Josef passes him on the back straight and then Pato repasses on the run to the line. Josef really chopped down tight on Pato into T3 causing Patos car to wash up the track and that took away his chance to get back by.

race day, 12.40, under the stands after being told to clear them at 11.40, rain took an age to show up them a monsoon hit!

and by 4pm the sky was turning blue and the driers were doing their thing

8pm and the exodus, amazed that so many people left without too much hassle, they have the traffic thing really sorted, our coach was due to leave at 9pm, took 20mins to leave the car park then it was a constant 20-30 mph out to the city, at the bar by 10.30pm

20240526_195830 by Old_Chad, on Flickr

Didn't actually get too many photos during the race, will go though wifey's photos later to see what she got.

I was sat next to an Argentine chap from Buenos Aires who spoke no english, he was in his Canapino shirt & me in my Grosjean shirt, managed to kinda chat away all race, he was genuinely gutted when Canapino got the drive through, was looking good for a top 10 finish.

Will be back, expect not next year but hopefully the year after. The noise when O'Ward took Newgarden into 1 at the end of the race was unreal, SW vista didn't want to see a back to back win it seems!

Awesome photos @scrw.

Going to the 500 is definitely on the bucket list, and seeing all the accounts and photos confirms it’s well worth the visit, thanks for posting

The scale of the whole event is off the charts, nowhere else in the world do 400,000 people buy tickets every year for a single day’s event. Love it.

You’d have thought that Detroit, of all places, would be somewhere with a decent and permanent venue for racing cars. This is one of the worst circuits on the calendar.
