This did get me wondering what the ultimate road trip route through Wales would be. B4235 in from the bridge, across the Beacons and up the Black Mountain Road, up to the Elan Valley, on to Snowdonia and the Evo Triangle?
would be a very long day.I just got back from snowdon area myself. Great stuff. Loved the Evo triangle, but i think there were some better views/roads up there.
Best trip is to make a three day jobby and enjoy what Wales has to offer as well. You can do North from South taking in some of the best roads and most stunning scenery and a bonus, the Mach Loop. Had a few escorts from the RAF going down that valley. Anyway, stay around Chester then hoon away westwards including the triangle . Stay around Caernafon (Seiont Manor is superb). Then Leg it back home using the good stuff you did not use on the way up. Harlech Castle is worth a visit on the way back.
That's what I have done anyway but I live in S Wales.

Me and few of the boys are going to hit some of the roads mentioned above this weekend, particularly the A4069. Its going to be an M3-fest with a gallardo and 911 in tow. Anyone want to get their cars out for a last blast before the winter weather sets in feel free to join the convoy.
chaps i know this is an old thread but hoping for a bit of local knowledge. am planning the final 2 legs of a road trip which will see us venture on the way back south through Wales - north to south and out somehwere around Gloucs as we'll be heading back towards London.
I've trawled through this thread and others and see that there's umpteen good roads, the only prob is noting them, plotting them and linking them into a sensible route.
i've made an ITN using TYRE which at this stage is rough and which can be amended, albeit we can't add too many miles to the current total. However i'd be very grateful if anyone with local knowledge would volunteer to take a look and advise on any other 'must do' roads or perhaps advise us to leave some of the existing route in favour of alternatives.
the parameters are that we'll be heading into Wales via Chester area around 11am and need to stay somewhere around Llandrindod Wells - well somewhere between there and the Brecons.
and the next morning we'll have 3-4 hours to do any special roads around the Brecons before we need to cross into Gloucs.
so anyone able to help out?

Chester - Bala(avoiding A roads where possible) - south of Bala Lake turn left on to B4403 and then RIGHT on to unnumbered road here I've trawled through this thread and others and see that there's umpteen good roads, the only prob is noting them, plotting them and linking them into a sensible route.

(hope that works)
Follow up narrow but entertaining road to top.
It's the old Austin test road[Llanuwchllyn - Dinas Mawddwy]
"In 1920's and 1930's Austin's test drivers used this road to test their cars. It was called 'Hellfire Pass' by the English, but the local population returned it to it's original name of Bwlch y Groes"
Nice viewpoint at the top with a plaque that'll you about the Austin testing and some nature stuff.
At Dinas Mawddwy turn LEFT on to A470 >>> roundabout - straight on to A487
>>>> carry on to Machynlleth (wednesday is market day and they have a great curry van on the main st) A489 Newtown Road [car park off there on the right]
Opp. the community hosp turn RIGHT on to Forge Road and aim for Dylife.
Great views looking back toward Snowdonia.
At Dylife (probably not marked) is a viewpoint of the Dylife Gorge.
[Anyone with a sporty little BMW may wish to take care as http://www.countytimes.co.uk/news/88964/exclusive-... will show]
After that continue - turn RIGHT at next junction onto B4518
You can carry on directly to Llanidloes or turn RIGHT before Staylittle (awkward turn with little warning before you're upon it) and go thro Hafren Forest to the Clywedog road and turn LEFT
Follow the road all the way to the dam
There are loos and a small cafe above the dam. It's on a short ONE WAY system which includes a hairpin.
Carry on until you come back on to the B4518 and turn RIGHT for Llanidloes.
At the bottom of the hill turn RIGHT over the bridge and LEFT at the roundabout >>>
by-pass and RIGHT on to A470 >>>> Llangurig.
LEFT at Llangurig roundabout >>>> Rhayader.
I don't know about B&B in Rhayader but it's a good place to stay. It's about 14 miles from Llandrindod Wells (llandod, for short)
hope that helps
