The guy that owns or owned Ardmair campsite at Ullapool used to have a mahoosive Winnebago and kept it either at the campsite or a cottage at Blughasary. He reckoned he had no issues taking it round, for example, Achiltbuie apart from the slight risk of grounding the rear overhang.
Mind you this was in pre-NC500 days.

Spotted these chaps outside our hotel in Gairloch back in June.

Some were trailered others were driven up, one from Hemel Hempstead.

My favourite by far was this stunning V8.

Some had travelled further.

A huge number of foreign registered vehicles this year.

Lots of foreign registered bikes too including a large group of Harleys heading to the pie shop in Lochinver. Most surprising were the pair of heavily laden Dutch registered Lambrettas! Brave souls.

That was our group. We stayed in the pods at the campsite up the road. Was a great weekend with great weather, great roads and great company.

The weather was incredible but the main surprise for me was how few cars were on the roads. I expected it to be heaving but it almost felt like we were up there on our own. Wasn't at all envious of those in sports cars...

Well, this is one way to travel in the Highlands (a still from my dashcam - he was probably doing about 30 mph).

At least they were on the verge, they'd have been on the wrong side of the road down here in the Midlands.

Fair play to the cyclists descending from Glenshee today, 50+ mph was giving me the willies and I was only overtaking.

No idea how the locals deal with the moving car roadblocks doing 35 everywhere, drove me nuts today. I'd have 50ft posters everywhere reminding them to pull over and not behave like an arse.

There are frequently massive fking signs saying "let faster traffic past" and every single passing place has a sign next to it reading "passing place"! I dunno how much more could be done? Maybe some massive Hollywood style writing on the slopes of Ben Alligin and Bein Eighe facing the A896 and reading "let faster traffic pass, you bellends!"

Artists impression

Funny you should mention the Dutch. A colleague at work whose husband is in the traffic police says that the majority of the accidents on the A9 and in the Highlands involve Dutch drivers.
Beware those vehicles with the yellow plates front and back.

i cannot stand the Dutch. Best I don't get started ranting as it would be O/T after the first 10 paragraphs or so.

I'm heading up to the Highlands in a few weeks and we're stopping off in Falkirk for the night to break up the journey.

From Falkirk to the Isle of Skye (Bridge side - Kyle of Lochalsh), which is the best way to go?

A84 then A82? or A9 then A82? Bearing in mind it's the bank holiday weekend. Not too fussed about time/mileage differences, just want the nicest road.

The A9 isn't much of a drivers road. I'd go (and usually do) M9 Stirling/ A84 to Callander/A85 Crianlarich/A82 Glencoe, Fort William and then onto the A87 Kyle of Lochalsh.

Set out early you might even get a clear run. smile

If you've never done the A82 from Tyndrum over Rannoch Moor to Glencoe then you need to do that. Road and scenery excellent, lots of places to stop for pics. The downside is it will likely be a 40mph convoy. Also once past Glencoe village the section of A82 between Ballachulish Bridge and Fort William is a bottleneck. I've seen me taking 1 hour just to get through that 15 mile section.

I've done the A82 plenty of times so I'd be going A9 to Dalwhinnie then the A86 over to Spean Bridge if it was me.

Dalwhinnie to Spean Bridge was more fun as a driving road for me. I mind getting a few clear runs in the M5 and it was bliss.

I don't think it is a bank holiday in Scotland - they had theirs last week.
