I've not driven masses of A roads, but the A57 between Glossop and Sheffield never, ever fails to put a smile on my face.
...and possibly a semi.
ETA: I have done the A625 a few times to Chapel-en-le-frith but caught traffic. Lovely scenery though.

[quote=atom mark]the A86 from Kingussie to Spean Bridge. stunning !!
Absoultely the best road in Britain on a superbike and I guess in a capable car......80mph +++ corners all the way..plus a lot more on the straights ...great surface, no traffic...and I have never seen the BIB on it yet...no promises though

Yes it is an excellent stretch of road, several very good clear stretches and good twisty sections, and the views are fabulous.
Favorite road at the mo has to be the old A30 between Okehampton and Launceston.
Its no longer classed an A-road, but still has all the features of a high volume A-road ( but no traffic ).
After hours and and hours trudging back down boring motorways and dual carriage ways its sooo nice to get back on a decent A-road

The A82 between Tyndrum and Fort William, through Glencoe. Quite simply the most breathtaking scenery, amazing straights and challenging bends.
Highly recommended. 46 miles of perfection. Click the link and zoom into street view for a preview if you are not familiar.

The A686 from Haydon Bridge to Alston is good one usualy quiet on the Sunday morning lash too!
+1. Some great hairpins along there but some parts can get a bit frustrating if there's traffic because overtaking spots are limited, particularly closer to Haydon Bridge. The B6277 down from Alston is also brilliant.
Living about 3 miles from the 6047 its part of my test track after I've been tinkering with the car!
My very favourite though is the mountain road between machynlleth and dylife in mid wales. It begins with a fantastic view down pennant valley and winds up and over the hills to machynlleth with absolutely stunning views. Bits of it have recently been resurfaced as well, which just adds to the fun
