UK to the other end of Russia can be done without many complications in summer. Boat from there to Japan should also not be the end of the world.

According to wikipedia, standard cars can now do the Trans-Siberian Highway in summer.

Vladivostok to Toyama: http://www.bisintour.com/

Bit more info here: http://www.waytorussia.net/FarEast/Vladivostok/Tra...

Didn't Mercedes do a trans-Siberian trip a while ago? I can't recall what cars they used, whethe rit wa sthe new ML, the GL or the 2006 facelfit E-Class. For some reason I think it was the latter. Yes, E-Clss: http://www.worldcarfans.com/10610205922/mercedes-e...

From Merc's own site: http://www.e-class-experience.com/start.html?lang=...

I rode from U.K. to Vladivostock in 2004, North Korea was not possible to transit. There were loads and I mean loads of RHD used Japanese motors driving the other way. Russians were buying them by the boat load and ferrying them into Vladivostock then driving them west to sell. It was quite usefull, if ever I arrived at a junction unsure which way to go if I waited a few minutes a used Jap motor would appear from one of the roads...no maps needed lol. Vladivostock had huge open car sales lots full of used Jap stuff, landcruisers were very popular. I took the ferry to south Korea and then put my bike on a car delivery ferry, Korea to Southampton. You can drive Uk to Singapore, though China takes a bit of sorting and is expensive..

i have some time off in 2011. what would be the most interesting route?

through russia and mongolia and china then onto japan

or

through turkey and iran and india then onto singapore

maybe it depends on which destination means most to you.

what would you drive? do you need 4x4?

great site that, Hooli, although this had me a little concerned: "or only travel short distances, say 2-300 km in a day" 180 miles a day every day is plenty long enough I reckon!

Depends on the roads If you want to travel or holiday I guess.
I can imagine going down Africa that'd be a good figure, crossing france it's time for a teabreak.
