Best roads in Wales? (and places to stay)
Discussion
Hi Phers,
Planning our Wales Weekender 2019 and wanted your opinions on the below itinerary. I tried to mix A- and B-roads as well as the usual scenic single tracks (e.g. Abergwesyn).
Any views, any roads missing or suggestions? (and if anyone has any recommendation re. restaurants and hotels, am keen too
Many thanks!

- DAY 1* = Bridgend > Treorchy > A4069 > Old Military rd to Tirabad > Abergwesyn > Elan Valley > Devil's Bridge > A44 > B4518
- DAY 2* = Snowdonia... This one is a bit of a left-field itinerary. I included the usual suspects like B4391, Llanberis pass and A470, but am slightly unsure about the bits East of Snowdonia (e.g. B5113 - A544 - are these any good?). Am in 2 minds about the EVO Triangle.. I know they are great roads, but often controlled!! Any views?
- DAY 3* = back South via B4518 > Builth Wells B4520 > B4560
Many thanks!

Re. your routes - I would maybe...:
- add a run around the reservoirs of Elan Valley
- On the way back include the B4520 / B4519 south of Builth Wells
Let me know your feedback once you've done it!

Cheers Kewy (and all), I've done the A4069 a few times in the past, and while there's no denying it's an absolute belter of a road, the speed limit puts me off a little as does the profile it gets as a road that's policed by marked and unmarked vehicles of all shapes and sizes.
As for the discussion around south, mid and north Wales, of course that's down to personal preference and what vehicle you're in but my votes go firmly to north and mid Wales, with special mentions for the B4391 east from Ffestiniog, all the way to Penybontfawr and beyond, and the route from Machynlleth south-east to Llanidloes (which I've heard is better in the opposite direction - I'll let you know at the end of March). The Llanberis Pass never fails to impress with the scenery, but I've never been able to time it right and get a decent run without being stuck behind a slow-moving vehicle. One day...
100% agree! I also drove the A4069 last time I visited Wales, but the 40mph speed limit and extra "attention" kinda dampen the fun... Same comment re. EVO Triangle. Totally agree they are cracking roads, but victims of their popularity.. This year am looking forward to the old Military Rd to Tirabad which looks good + Llanidloes > Machynlleth (which I did in the pouring rain in a Caterham last time..)... not forgetting the Rhayader > Devils Staircase and B4391
