There aren't really any roads in the central LD suitable for summertime fast driving. To narrow, knarly and busy. Better to relax and soak up the scenery. If you want driving roads you need to head East either to the Dales or North Pennines up to Alston and beyond.
This. Head up to Penrith then up to Alston then down to Middleton-in-Teesdale, then head towards Tebay via Kirkby Stephen. Much quieter and faster roads than the Lakes.

which will give you some really good routes but don't try the first 2 during the day or try to have any driving 'fun' the as roads are full to capacity with tourists dawdling along at 15mph and camper and caravan drivers who have never driven on a narrow lakeland stone walled lined 'b' or 'c' road, the third on is our Sunday morning bike route but is a safer bet to do midweek in a car.
This takes me to the menu buddy which will give you some really good routes but don't try the first 2 during the day or try to have any driving 'fun' the as roads are full to capacity with tourists dawdling along at 15mph and camper and caravan drivers who have never driven on a narrow lakeland stone walled lined 'b' or 'c' road, the third on is our Sunday morning bike route but is a safer bet to do midweek in a car.
