thanks!
yeah, its not bad, and yeah its largely standard - it was 100% standard when i got it (those alloys were an option when it was new apparently?), although ive added a few bits, but only things that can be swapped back when i want to sell the car, its too original to modify too much! ive even got the original steel wheels (which ive now refitted), instruction manual and original rubber mats! Hello Mad Dave
Nice to see sombody else with a Mk2 golf who hasn't done things a bit OTT.
Did you ever concider getting the big bumpers for the car as, on a black car, it would look excellent,
One day i will get my ar*e in gear and try and get my golf on here for people to see
By the way your alloys look like they are TSW Alpines, as for as i can remeber they were not an option on the Mk2 but look smart anyway, perfeclty suited for the Mk2
Just though I'd share that witht you

Hey guys, only just seen these replies!
Thanks for the comments.
Ive since refitted the standard 4 lamp grille and also after an 'enthusiast' outing to Castle Combe Circuit, the standard 14" steelies complete with the black plastic centres (tyres were shagged on the Alpines and i quite fancy the standard look) so the car is almost completely standard except for the lights and steering wheel (and stereo etc).
As for big bumpers - i absolutely love 'em, but being 21 i already get accused of being a boyracing member of the max muppet brigade, so big bumpers would hardly help my cause - plus it seems a shame to modify the car to that extent - its gotta be one of the best standard cars about, its immaculate and still feels like new, so i dont want to fit anything that changes the look of it, also only stuff that can be reverted back to standard easily.
Funnily enough, i actually wanted a late spec, big bumper 16v, but all the ones i saw were dogs, so when i saw my E plate small bumper 8v i snapped it up. Im chuffed i did tho [

The wheels are indeed TSW Alpines, apparently theyve been on it since new and ive seen loads of Golfs running on them - apparently when the car was new it was used as the demonstrator for the garage so maybe thats why?
Anyway, thanks for your comments [

Good to see a non-molested mark2. Just bought the bread knife a mk2 16v in atlas grey.... loverly and NO (yeah thats right, NO) modifications at all. Got the BBS wheels, PAS and a full VW service history.... and when you throw in the cost at £1800 you have such a bargain that it is just ridiculous....
Love it and glad I have gone back to a Mk2.... for some strange reason currently cant consider getting rid of it - ever.... though time will tell I suppose.
Nice motor mate.

LOL@Steve - nah, got shot of it mate, got sick of fixing the thing. By the time i sold it it was in really good nick mechanically - the guy bought it and drove to bloody france in it with no problems! lol
Southampton eh? So when are ya gonna pop over for a pint then bro?!
I got the Golf back in April - 100% standard aside from the wheels, but it came with FSH, original steel wheels, original rubber mats and even the instruction manual! I bought it off an old ex copper who'd owned it for 11 years - always garaged, waxoyled underneath every year and went winter came along he put the steelies on! I managed to pick it up for the bargain price of £900 with 95k on it!!
Sounds like you also got a bargain too, ![](http://www.pistonheads.com/include/images/smile.gif)

Hurrah for Mk 2 Gti Golfs, ive always had one or more in my fleet, currently have a 2 door 16V in build for some fast road & track action next yr coz falling off my motorbike hurts!. Using a new high spec race engine- but using road cams for a bit if midrange on the rd!! carrilo rods special pistons etc plus its all & held together with racewere bolts. Eibach suspension & anti roll bars, ( get the a-roll bars on on your road cars increases handling fantastically and does not affect the ride) new gear box plus lots of other bits like a K star etc.
Hoping for a reliable & unburstable 160-180bhp when done. so should kick supercar arse on track days if weight is down to 900kg.
Probabally selling my old Porker 944 to fund it all, so if inteseted e mail me or look in the clasifieds in the future.
oh ps pbrettle i put some 16v info on the civic type R thread ages ago for you did you see it?

Igunana - hurrah indeed!
Your project sounds excellent, ill look forward to seeing the pictures when its done! Mine is completely standard engine wise (ive added a few visual bits but nowt else) and i think ill leave it that way - im currently enjoying VW reliability and dont want to compromise that!
Whats this about anti roll bars - i assumed it had them as standard! I was going to fit an upper strut brace but decided against it as i knew id bodge up the drilling! lol. I might look into these a-roll bars.
Im thinking about getting either a 205GTI 1.9 or a Golf GTI 16v and stripping it out purely for track use - i took my 8v round Castle Combe 2 weeks after i bought it which was eventful - brilliant fun, and i think ive caught the track bug

Mad dave, yes they have AR bars as std but these bolt on over the top at the rear and at the front (i think- ive not fitted em yet) replace the standard one they are thicker & stronger. prices roughtly £200 ish depending where you get them, with them on and a decnt suspension kit ie Koni etc some decent negative camber on the front ie 3 degrees if you only use it on the track and you will truely kick supercar arse on track days if you can really drive.
I drove the 16v golf in the track day cars classifieds ( i put a thread on the track day forum about it)and the handling was bloody excellent and I drive Porsches in my job. It is really suprising that a prehistoric suspension set up, ie mcpherson struts at the front and a beam axle at the rear can actually handle so well. read cars & car conversions this month ref Trevor Reeves Mk2 golf, faster than all supercars on track inc 400+ bhp 996 turbo Porsches, GT3, new M3 etc etc
Im hoping my golf will be excellent when done, im just working to a very small budget so it will take some time and ive got to try & keep the costs down- which is why i diddnt put in the Audi TT 1.8 turbo engine as i would need a LSD and a lot of time spent sorting the electronics it in etc. ref looks im hoping it will look like a standard 16v but go rather better!!

Nice one, sounds like a beast - as for looks, its good to hear youll be keeping it std looking - a real 'sleeper'. I dont really want to spend too much on the car, as ill only get bored with it in 6 months or so and sell it anyway (i have a real hankering for either an old Porsche or a Corrado). So far all its cost me is routine stuff (tyres and brake pads) and id like to keep it taht way! I may well look into getting some better AR bars or an upper strut brace - would this be beneficial? I also dont want to fit too much that cant be ripped off when i sell it as im informed that its worth a lot more as a completely standard original car that it would be with a few mods!
