2004 V70 D5. More eBay goodness in the usual fashion!
Discussion
Bit of a bargain that, if it all checks out ok.
40 mpg should be within reach, depending of course, on how you drive. As long as you exercise a modicum of restraint most of the time that should be easily attainable. I wouldn't take much notice of the OBC though, mine, for instance, now thinks it's averaging 61.3 mpg, whereas the best I've ever had from a tank is a real 48.7 mpg. However, for most people, it seems the OBC is around 5-6 mpg optimistic.
Good luck.

Once again I wonder how you have the guts to blind bid on an ebay car that is the other side of the world!
Okay, slight exaggeration, but I've only pulled it off once, and that car was 10 miles away. Unfortunately, most of my travelling some distance to see a car experiences have been rather enthusiasm draining - but I am hoping that you've dropped lucky. No better feeling than scooping a bargain motor - well maybe being the honorary guest at a free-for-all in the playboy mansion.....
Anyways I is all excited for you.

A Lex, very best of luck: I hope it turns out to be as good as it looks - interior aside!Okay, slight exaggeration, but I've only pulled it off once, and that car was 10 miles away. I won my current E46 Touring with 1 month MOT on eBay for £1500 after a few beers. Although not as far, it was 5 hours on public transport and I'd pretty much committed myself with a one way ticket! It didn't put a foot wrong on the return journey and flew through the MOT a couple of weeks later. So far, I've only had to fix a parking sensor, regas the air con and fit a new caliper.
My buying experience was utterly positive, the guy even detailed the car for me and put half a tank of unleaded in prior to collection.
Congratulations. I also have a '05 D5 V70, done 185.000 miles and engine still going strong (although it gets occasional electric issues and the gearbox is starting to "lag" sometimes). These cars got very comfy seats for commuting and one tank can last 1200 km. on the motorway. Maybe I'm crazy but I feel these cars are more comfortable than most newer Mercedes I've sat in! The only thing I hate is the HUGE turning circle - I try to avoid U-turns as often as possible!
Not a PH kind of car, but over the years (5th year of ownership now) I've learned its limits and it's fun tossing this whale around...
Enjoy it!

Ha ha, I should have done: might have topped 100mpg.
That was mostly 50-60mph cruising (without the cruise control on) up and down the M1.
The car had just been remapped by RICA on their Sport Hybrid 204bhp remap too - although using the increased power/torque didn't go hand in hand with that fuel consumption sadly!

I'm curious to know how the displayed average compares to reality. What does it work out to on a fill to fill basis? That was mostly 50-60mph cruising (without the cruise control on) up and down the M1.

I no longer have the car, but I can give you my experience of about 25k miles over 3 years. My day-to-day driving, which included town/dual carraigeway/country B/C road commuting with most journeys <10 miles resulted in an average of anything between 42 and 46mpg (calculated, often 1-3mpg lower than the OBC)
Sat at 80mph on the French autoroute for miles and miles on end, it'd do about 55mpg. At 70, 60+mpg was possible. Driving very carefully, it'd do 70-75mpg but that was really concentrating and keeping the speeds to 56-60mpg.
The fuel consumption improved (~5%) once I had the RICA Sport 'hybrid' remap carried out in 2006.
It was probably the best all round car I owned.

That is incredible. Mine's old (180k on the clock), and seemingly has not been looked after particularly well, which I think shows. 70 mph for me will get an average of about 47-48 max. OBC overreads by a good 14 mpg, as I keep banging on about on other threads, my long term average (over 34k and 18 months) is getting close to 42 mpg, but recently I've been taking it easy and getting 46-47 from a tank, so the average will come up over time I think. My day-to-day driving, which included town/dual carraigeway/country B/C road commuting with most journeys <10 miles resulted in an average of anything between 42 and 46mpg (calculated, often 1-3mpg lower than the OBC)

Bloody good car though. It's going to be difficult to replace when the time comes.

14mpg overead? That's very strange, they're generally accepted to be +/- 5%. I always calculated at the pumps and the OBC was rarely out more than that.Bloody good car though. It's going to be difficult to replace when the time comes.
I tend to get quite good MPG from most cars - must be my style of driving! The car was 70-100k in my ownership and always well maintained both prior and during my ownership.
Is yours auto/geartronic/manual? The auto and geartronic do take a chunk out of the consumption.
