My Maestro Turbo No:435
Discussion
Hi Im Michael from Manchester thought I would post some more Information
about my Maestro Turbo No 435.
Where to start really ???
I’ve always loved the Maestro turbo every since I was a spotty 16 year old apprentice mechanic at Horner’s in Manchester and I worked with a gentleman called Colin Francis. He raced a 300bhp Maestro turbo in the Toyo Tyres Fast Road Saloon Championship. If I remember I was the butt of a few jokes at the time. Racing against RS Turbo, Lotus Sunbeams Capri’s, SD1’s. After a while the jokes stopped when they realised how fast the car was. And he did really well in the Championship.
He took me under his wing and made me part of his team. From that day on I promised myself I would own a Maestro Turbo!
About 4 years ago I found number 435 on ebay for and snapped it up. I was over the moon as it was a genuine black one and only 49 where made. I more or less had to pass an interview before the gentleman would sell it me. The car had No tax No Mot and been stood for a number of years and did need quite a lot of work. But looking at the file full of history i knew this car had been looked after in the past and needed to be back on the road.
After 4 years and lots of sweet and tears and money I’ve got it to where it is now.
It’s still not perfect. The bodywork still needs attention in areas.
The drivers door needs replacing.
But I’m happy with what I have achieved keeping this car still on the road
This car has been modified.
From MG TF 160 Brakes
MG TF Alloys
Rover Turbo LSD Gearbox.
Larger turbo with modified dump vale.
Battery to boot conversion with forced cold air feed
Sparco coolant hoses.
Smoothed out front bumper
De-locked
Lowered
Tinted Windows
Theirs probably lots more but I’m writing this in work on my dinner and my mind has gone blank!
The car is a scream to drive. And still pulls like a train up till 130mph (on a track of course) Always puts a smile on my face. A quick drive turns into a 3 hour drive. I only drive her from March time onwards and only for 6 months and then she goes away for the winter. Keep the mileage down clock show 68.000 miles.
I can’t believe the attention this car gets when I’m out driving or at Shows from all ages. Still shocks me. Any questions please ask.
Thanks for reading Mike

Loving it , used to gorp at one in the car park at work back in 1990. a BRG one . The bloke who had it had no idea at all what he was driving. a bit of bonkers slipped through the Rover net.
Actually if you go to the "Pride of Longbridge" show its a bit like an episode of Wacky Races. Everything from huge 4 l Van Den Plas bolides down to a City Rover. English eccentricity in metal. The MG Maestro turbo was a great car but I havent seen one for a while. This may be the last of the mohicans.
Love it, when I passed my test in 1987 my dad went out to buy a new car and came back with a 1.3 L in White which to be fair I thought was awesome at the time they had very nice interiors compared to some stuff around then, the Turbo was something I dreamt of it's great to see one in such good nick

They really are marmite, lots of bad press and haters in the day yet loads of support nowadays.
My dad had two Montego turbos in 85 and 87, I loved them - build quality was really poor though.
I had 2 Montego turbos aswell - build not the best but i reckon my 2 rover 75s were worse- water leaks on a modern car are taking the mick.My dad had two Montego turbos in 85 and 87, I loved them - build quality was really poor though.
well done to you. keep it like that. i spent many happy hrs with andy nicholls of AN Racing fame teararsing about in his modified MG Maestro turbo. handled well when set up right, fast and torquey, ok not the best built cars ever but you wont be seeing many others on the road anytime soon.
always remember doing a genuine 150+ mph in andys beast when it had the T16 turbo conversion and something like 500+bhp @ wheels, on a certain stretch of private mway we used to set the car up on back in the day :-)
it used to jump lanes on boost due to torque steer lol
