UAZ 469 - Project Kozlik
Discussion
Been looking around for a project – mild resto – for some time now. Last week I spotted an interesting lot on the well known auction site.
I’d been looking at these online for a while now - missed out on one a few months back – so when this one popped up I swooped and won the auction on Saturday.
What is it? It’s a 1983 UAZ 469B!
Packing a powerful 2.4L with over 75HP...not to be sniffed at....
I’ve named this Project Kozlik. Kozlik is apparently the nickname for the 469 meaning Goat in Russian!
Where am I with this today, well paid the seller and arranged for “The Goat” to be transported to its new home on Friday.
Initial impressions and more pics to come...

Very cool. What are parts like to get for these? Can you order them online easily enough, or do you need to be able to speak Russian?
Parts seem fine to get hold of, loads of links in forums and blogs. I've bookmarked this one as they seem to stock everything!https://www.russianspares.com/index.php
Post Friday they may or may not have a big order on their hands....

The UAZ-469 is an off-road military light utility vehicle manufactured by UAZ. It was used by Soviet and other Warsaw Pact armed forces, as well as paramilitary units in Eastern Bloc countries. In the Soviet Union, it also saw widespread service in state organizations that needed a robust and durable off-road vehicle..
Saw many of them until the mid-late 90s in the Baltics. Not very much after that. Kind of a Soviet Land Rover equivalent (pre Lada Niva), but I guess more rugged and less developed. I remember a neighbor of my grandparents using a similar one. He was a state forester/ranger.
Also, very characteristically of Soviet times, they started development of the car in 1961 and the first test example rolled out as early as 1962. But production didn't start until 10 years later in 1972.
A source from 2013 says that that it is (or was in 2013) still the only offroad ("jeep") class car in the Russian military as well as the basis for special police cars. (For more you can use Google translate: http://www.veneraud.ee/romula/uaz/uaz-469-469b-315... .)
So conceived in the 1960s but still going strong over 50 years later.

The Goat has arrived!
Started on the button and drove it off the flat bed, seems to run and stop well....on the drive
First thing I noticed is the bonnet, needs a bit more work that I initially thought.
Will give it a good clean and post some more pics when and if it stops raining :/

Love that, was obsessed with a PC game called Operation Flashpoint when I was a kid in which you could make your own maps/missions/etc and there was a whole library of Soviet era vehicles and equipment to choose from!
The UAZ was a staple
I think I first drove one in "Mercenaries" on PS2 The UAZ was a staple
So first impressions, pretty solid. Took all the rubber mats out to check out the floors and brush out all the debris, quick wipe down and not too bad!
Keep finding random screws, nuts and bolts...getting quite a collection already.
The engine bay looks OK too, new battery and ignition leads. Bit of a spruce and should be good too.
Manoeuvred it out of the way on the drive for the evening, I think the gearbox will take some getting used to. There must be a knack for 1st and reverse!
The bad points, bonnet really is in a sorry state. Paint and filler coming off in big layers, going to check that out in more detail tomorrow, few patches of peeling paint on prob every panel and the bumper has taken a knock at some point and will need pulling out, its one solid piece of metal!
