A little more progress.

I know it’s the slowest build ever but the end is now finally in sight, phew...

Cheers everyone, it has a front now too, all the body is only rested on though so no sneezing in the garage hehe

Struggling with time and garage temperatures at the moment but hope to have a running engine very soon... biggrin

Oh and I think the answer to getting the car down is as already said, bloody carefully, and with the help of an engine crane or two.

Having said that I've learned enough on here not to claim that there was never a Gulf GT40 with all-orange wheels.
Not sure I ever said what colour it’s going to be.....

That's why I said "If". Never assume anything! biggrin

When talking about historic cars on here it's fatal to use the words 'never' or 'always' as some clever clogs will always prove you wrong.

And I just broke my rule twice. smile
Learnt that lesson myself a few times too... rolleyeshehe

Well this weekend proved to be an unexpectedly productive one... (well for the GT40 at least)

So best laid plans aside, including; lawns not cut, downstairs loo wood floor not laid and last but not least mrs Hoonigan being particularly unimpressed equated to:

Front and rear clips fitted, distributor gear swapped (utter bd of a job) and engine running, woooohoooo....

https://youtu.be/xJnpPjpDob0

https://youtu.be/Prv5lXlSizg

All going to plan, oil pressure and temps good and fans cut in and out, battery light is on (needs investigation) but charging well also tacho is not working but I’ll sort that.

https://youtu.be/yxryBdQ-A8M

https://youtu.be/v6O75cLgw5o

Then I thought I’d check to see the rad was bleeding ok? Arse, the ham fisted git that I am involved me over tightening the bleed banjo bolt so end of play for today rolleyes

https://youtu.be/GPPJWs_OpcU

New bolt in order and all will be good though, engine ran surprisingly smoothly and really quiet considering, my IVA fears over noise have been reduced significantly.
I did also gain a leak from the front of the sump so that will need addressing ASAP, but that said and all things considered I’m pretty bloody happy with this weekends progress; beers will be drunk this evening. biggrin

You must have seriously grollied that thing on for it to snap! eek

Not really, in incredibly weak component when you think about it... it’s only a very small aluminium bolt.

Congratulations! That's a big step forward.
Thank you, it’s a real milestone for me and a really good moral boost after investing so much time and money into it.

Well doesn’t look like much progress but I have been busy...

All fuel plumbing now finished, tanks mounted and fuel fillers ready to be fitted when I’ve finished off some final bits of wiring for the heated screen, fitting the alarm and sorting the final brake bias and pedal adjustment (all of these things are much easier to do without fitting the front panel the fillers mount to).

Body is now pretty much finished (enough for IVA) doors are hung and functioning but still waiting for my door seals to arrive before finally setting and gapping them.

Finally new seats arrived and are ready to go in soon.

All in all on target for a summer IVA date so happy with the slowgress achieved.

All lights fitted and working now too.

Thanks for your comments, I’m pretty chuffed to say the least biggrin

Still loads to do, engine needs tuning and as you may have heard there a few exhaust leaks (around the collectors) and there is also a fairly noticeable backfire coming through the carb so will need to get those bits sorted as a priority, but it goes and that’s good enough for this weekend.

Getting it down was fun but thanks to a few good friends who didn’t seem to fussed about keeping their toes and a ropey engine hoist it made it safely to the ground.

I’ve got a few more pics I’ll post up in a bit...

Ive just spent alot of today reading through all 17 pages, Excellent build thread and brilliant attention to detail. Great to see it move under it own steam and I really hope its worth the effort for you. Also that looks like an interesting mini at the end of that last clip, yours Maybe?
Thanks too kind.

The mini is not mine (I wish) but belongs to a friend, it’s utterly mental. Honda engine with a bloody great supercharger stuck on and all shoved in the boot, circa 400bhp and 750kg eek

Crikey. That was mightily close.

I thought I was pushing it with the slope/angle of my drive and I'd been worried about getting mine out (which as you know is a long way behind yours).

Had you worked it out first or was it eyeballed?
I had an idea it would clear as have have had Mk11 on the drive before, a bit bloody close though and not looking forward to my first speed hump either.

Exhaust back boxes adjusted, tip moved over and sealed on ready for IVA, they may still need some tweaking to the collectors to get them lined up for final fit (not fitted the rear clip back on yet, that’s one of tomorrow’s jobs) but that can be done when the headers come off for ceramic coating after IVA (can’t afford it before)...

Windscreen fitting next week if they can fit me in.

Annual update time... hehe

So a day under 6 years from when the chassis was delivered the car has passed its IVA test on its first time woohoo Ive spent many hours over the last couple of months prepping for the test and luckily it has all now paid off.

So in a little more detail the day went unbelievably well, loaded up the night before and covered her up with a car cover (bloody good job as it pissed down most of the night), really didn't fancy it getting stolen so backed it up agains a tree and then parked the other car in front of it, probably OTT but six years...

Ready to go:

So set off at 06:00 for an 08:00 appointment, arriving an hour early but would have been an hour late if I'd left at 06:00 rolleyes (gotta love the M27).

Tester chap turned up at 07:30 and very kindly let me get the car in early, good job as it pissed it down the moment it was inside.

The tester was a really nice chap and clearly a car (or more specifically bus) enthusiast who knew his stuff.

The test is a four hour affair that basically checks everything, though they don't remove stuff, not even wheel!

We had done the ramp stuff, the lights, brakes, emissions, speedo, drive around the block and the weights by about 10:00 when he said it was a good time for a cuppa while he did the maths on the braking bias and efficiency, so while Dad and I drank tea and discussed progress the tester chap comes over and says it's basically passed!!! All that was left was the noise test which he said it was too wet to do our side and that he would do it inside but it should pass and it did, happy days...

So by 10:30ish we were ready to load up and on the road by 11:00ish, Amazing!

The only comment and respective adjustment from the inspector and throughout the whole experience was that one headlight was a tad high and the other a tad low, a twist of the spanner later and all good.

When all was finished he seemed genuinely very pleased for us and said it was impressive that it went though without any observations at all (he'd obviously forgotten about the head lights), but no where near as pleased as me cloud9.

I'm not gonna apologise for the smug tone because basically I am hehe , I never dreamed it would go this well so am fully revelling in it...

So back home and IVA it's time to get her ready for the road.

I will upload some more pics soon by for some reason I can’t get seem to upload any more from my phone now rolleyes

Next is apply for registration which I hope to have sorted by the end of the month and upgrade the insurance to cover road use.

Still lots to do but post IVA, paint, alignment, tuning but it seems an easy road ahead now (famous last words)...

I ordered myself a new registration number and will get all the documents sent off to the DVLA tomorrow, sooo close to properly driving it now driving

Thanks for the comments still on cloud nine...

Been busy though and getting the car ready for paint, bought some different wing mirrors, just taped on at the moment while I finalise their position but seem to offer a good view.

Got someone coming over tomorrow to quote for the paint, exciting but have a horrible feeling it will be depressingly expensive :rolletes:

Maybe go for a topaz skin ( or similar ) about 4-5k and removable. can match any paint code and you could then change it in the future if you decided too with ease.
Sounds like a good idea but not really an option, there is a huge amount of bodywork to do, in fact that is where the money is not in the paint and to be honest it would always be half a job, I’ve spent a huge amount of time and effort and not to mention money on this car so now is not the time to cut corners...

I’ve met with a painter today and think I will be going with him to do the work, probably not in time to enjoy this summer but certainly ready for next. That said I intend to get a good few hundred miles on it before paint so will still have fun biggrin
