Time for a bit of a spruce up today, and gave the car a good clay too. I know it’s a bit old school, but as I’m not exactly a wizard of detailing I always find using a clay bar gives good results. I plan to finish the job over the weekend with a good polish and wax, so it’s ready for its road trip soon

Decided I’d try a new wax for the 968, and went with a Bilt-Hamber product. This one is designed for older paint, and I’m pretty pleased with the results

I'm fan of Bilt-Hamber products, they seem to work very well. I had an issue with an order I placed with them directly, their customer service is excellent, actually far beyond my expectations.

I agree with this.

OP, Bilt Hamber suggest using cleanser fluid first for maximum adherence. Auto Balm can also be used on alloys.

Well you learn something new every day, as I went straight from claying and rewashing to applying the wax. I’ll pick up a bottle of that for next time - thanks for the tip! beer

Although having said that, I now find that for maintenance washes, the combination of touchiness snow foam, bucket wash with their auto wash and finishing with touch on is simpler and does a great job. Given your starting point now, I’d definitely move to the simpler option.

So I had something of a mini-road trip over the weekend, along with my eldest, and it’s been great fun. The end game was getting the car over to Jaz Porsche in St Albans for a proper service and checkover

We set off at dawn on Saturday morning from where we live in West Cork, which for those who don’t know is the most south-westerly point of Ireland. It’s about a 4.5 hour drive to Dublin, and given it’s not the most comfortable of cars there were a few coffee/fruit shoot breaks on the way:

But we made it to the ferry fine. My son did ask if we could swap for the red Aston, so I may need to have a little chat about economics with him at some point! biggrin

On the far side, we ended up in convoy with another Vantage across North Wales, and had a really good run in the evening sun. Next stop was my brothers house in Lancashire where we’d spend the rest of the weekend

On Monday morning we again left early for the drive to London, but as my son is a bit of a Man Utd fan I had a little surprise for him. The security staff on the gate also seemed amused at the old car turning up from Ireland

The rest of the journey down went fine, albeit a lot trundling along through M6 roadworks at 50mph. Towards the end we were glad to arrive in St. Albans, especially as I’d arranged to meet fellow PH-er jay-kay-em and his stunning Riviera Blue Club Sport

It was great to catch up with him and get a pic of the two cars together, especially considering they both left the factory in identical spec, colour aside. I’m not sure when my car was last in the company of another one

Then finally it was time to get the car down to Jaz, and we got a tour of the workshop there too. Very impressed with them on first contact:

So that was the end of part one, as we hit a local hotel and flew home the next morning. Next up is collecting the car next week and driving it back via a couple of stopovers, including Caffeine & Machine

Thanks mate, you too! Very impressed with Jaz so far, great communication this week from them on what they’re doing. I’ll post up the full list once all the work is finished

Got home fine thanks, although there’s still a lot more space in the 968 than there is on the likes of Ryanair biggrin

Bit of an update, since I travelled back over and brought the car back home at the weekend. I flew into Luton Airport on Thursday evening and met some friends who had travelled over through Holyhead, then headed to St Albans to get the car on Friday morning

I have to say that Steve and all the team at Jaz Porsche were great to deal with - really thorough, very good communication, they know these cars well and it shows

The great news to hear was that it’s a pretty solid car. I was fairly certain of this, but knew there was some rust on the rear jacking points that could be a concern. However, Jaz confirmed it was only surface, cleaned it up and treated it with preventative wax so it’s all good. Sills and the likes are all solid

The car has been pretty well looked after over the last 12-odd years by the previous owner, but it had done limited mileage in that time and had infrequent servicing, so I suspect it had longer bouts of being laid up. There was nothing too major that Jaz found, but a lot of smaller items that their checks threw up.

There were also a few things I’d noticed which I wanted them to look into, and I needed the original seat belts refitted to pass the NCT (Irish MOT) which meant the cage had to be removed. I’m in two minds about whether I’ll put this back in, as I would have to remove not only the standard seatbelts but also some of the internal trim again. The harnesses just clip in and out, but not having the cage now gives a better view of the seat backs when looking through the rear window, which are probably my favourite thing about this car!

Anyway, here is the list of work that Jaz performed, and the car is running great as a result

- Check over
- Major service, incl spark plugs
- Replacement of timing belt, cam chain, alternator belt, power steering belt, balance shaft belt and pully, water pump, thermostat, various tensioners and rollers
- Brake fluid
- Clutch fluid
- Exhaust clamps
- Various pipes and clips replaced
- Replaced radiator fan housing
- Removed roll cage and refit seatbelts and trims
- Replaced dizzy cap and rotor arm
- Replaced ignition lead set
- Repair to live cable to starter
- Refurbished wheels and centre caps, fitted locking wheel nuts
- Cleaned surface rust at rear jacking points and wax treated
- Replaced missing engine undertray
- Replaced steering shaft
- Replaced roll bar bushes and drop link arm
- Repair dash clock/stop-watch
- Dial cluster illumination fix
- Sunroof gear replacement

On the way back we decided to bring the cars to Caffeine and Machine (“The Hill”, near Stratford upon Avon) and stay overnight

We were just tucking into a spot of lunch and a pint, when someone came over to us and asked if we owned the white 968 and yellow M3. Turned out he was Jack, the official C&M photographer and a really nice guy, and asked if we’d be interested in a photoshoot. Given some of the cars they have going through there on a daily basis we were a bit taken aback, but delighted he was interested in them. He then must have spent the next hour taking some amazing pictures of the two cars. Here’s an example of one of them:

He’s going to send me on some of the high quality ones and I might be temped to get one of them made into a print for the garage wall

We had a great day at Caffeine and Machine, been there a few times and it’s always fun to see all manner of cars come through there. Lots of people to chat too, decent food and we’ve normally been lucky with the weather

On last Friday there was also the Gumball 3000 crew who arrived for a while, including Ben Collins and a few YouTubers who I believe are quite well known (Mr JWW, Matt Armstrong, Mark McCann)

Then as the sun went down I managed to get a shot of the car which shows off the refurbished wheels. As I think I mentioned earlier in the thread the car originally came on white wheels, but I decided to stick with Guards Red and I’m delighted with how they have come out:

Over the rest of the weekend then was the journey home. I drove the M3 for part of it, and it’s definitely the more comfortable car to do mileage on. However, I wouldn’t swap the 968. It’s been great to spend some time with it, and looking forward to getting it out and about again over the summer

Thanks Lee. I saw a good few 944s on the trip, but no other 968s of any description
