Beautiful car and a really good job, you must be really pleased.
Out of interest how cramped is the interior?
Hmmmm there’s a question...Out of interest how cramped is the interior?
By modern standards it’s a tad tight but to be fair it’s perfectly comfortable for me (says the man who’s driven all of 2 miles in it), time will tell but so far so good. I’ve room to put the seat back an inch if I grow and room to rest my left leg so I’m hopeful at this stage...

Good spot, but I’m hoping that I can improve on that... Hoonigan said:
Set for delivery beginning of April and hope to have it built with in a year or ten.......
Been talking with a painter and think a plan is forming, I’m going to give it a bloody good shake down over the next couple of months or so as well as fitting windows etc then hopefully get it booked in for paint with a view to being finished by the end of the year and certainly ready to fully enjoy next year, that said I’m not sure it will ever be finished but at least it will be driving
Ok so small update time...
I’ve pushed the paint back a few months as I’ve not managed to get enough miles on it but I have been busy.
I’ve fitted the headlight covers and one window, with the other nearly done, I also took the day off work to get the suspension aligned and the engine tuned.
Started off with an early start and a trip into the forest to go to Read Performance in New Milton, Neil is an American car specialist with a dyno so finding him and having him local was somewhat of a blessing.
I had no idea what to expect but was thinking I was running at approx 280-300BHP as I gave it to him but that was based on a very little knowledge a bit of guess work in my part and lots of YouTube videos.
As it turns out I had obviously been paying attention to YouTube as on the very first run and before anything was changed it pulled a respectable 424BHP at the wheels, needless to say I was equally chuffed and surprised! So following that Neil checked the timing and float levels were correct (which they were) and said there really was nothing to tune, my AFR was a little rich @ 11ish but he said leave it as it is for now as much better that way than too lean, so all in all a very good result ????
So following on from the engine I went straight to see Nick at the Wheel Alignment Centre in Southampton for the alignment, as I suspected as it was waaaay out, (22deg of tow in out) and made it basically undrivable, within an hour he had it all sorted and set up correctly so I can drive it properly.
I managed another 20miles at the weekend and the difference since the alignment was done is night and day, it handles great and all the bump steer and tram-lining I was experiencing has gone finally enabling me to give it some beans. I can safely say it is fairly quick and though I e not scared myself yet I can see it is a real possibility.
Now looking forward to getting another 3-400 miles under my belt and finish off all the little jobs before paint.

One of my favourite threads
When it’s finished do you paint paint lan on weight it in? Have you a rough idea or project aim regarding the weight?
Thanks, to be honest I’m not too sure regards the weight but I know a man with access to a weigh bridge so I do plans to find out, my guess would be circa 1100kg?When it’s finished do you paint paint lan on weight it in? Have you a rough idea or project aim regarding the weight?
Oh go on then as you asked nicely...
To be honest not huge progress really, but it is now ready for paint and I am meeting the painter this coming weekend to go over things with a view to booking it in early January.
Been trying to rack up the mileage on it and am now up to just under 500 so getting there slowly. Had a few teething issues with spitting out the the odd CV joint or three but that is now resolved by fitting some spacers and reducing the lateral movement in the drive shafts.
All in all I’m pretty pleased with it, drives incredibly well and oodles of power to play with, still getting fully used to it but loving it more and more every time I drive it.
Also been busy tinkering and finished lots of little jobs like all the windows and light covers, including the tiny and pointless opening side windows, mounting the front fog lights correctly and lots of other non visible bits.
Managed to find myself a Moto-lita wheel (on Facebook market place of all places) too so I can now finally see the gauges and it’s sooo much nicer to hold.
Really just looking forward to getting it painted now and getting lots more use out of it, roll on the summer...

Well I had a bit of time in the car over the Christmas period, popped over to a friends house and fitted a set of straight pipes to the car.
I really wasn’t sure if I wanted straight pipes but we ran out of time for the baffles and my hand was forced...
To say it’s loud would probably be an understatement, it’s epically loud...
Really pleased with the cleaner look and love the noise, though not sure my neighbours feel the same... best bit however is that I finally get pops bangs and flames when on the overrun and down hill.
Treated the whole system to a lick of VHT paint as the ceramic coating was coming off the headers and looked a bit st, I’m really pleased with the results and just hope it remains to looks half decent for a while before I get them properly ceramic recoated next winter.
Rather frustratingly the Painter I had lined up to paint the car (due last week) has let me down though in is defence he has lined up someone else but I’m shopping around so therefore I’m on the hunt for another one again, got a chap coming over in the morning to quote me who resprayed my old 911 a few years back so fingers crossed I’ll be back on track soon.

New boxes fitted but pre paint and with the crusty pipes:
While the rear clip was off I took the opportunity to fit a lower mount to my oil cooler which is something that has always scared the st out me since I forgot to fit it prior to IVA.
I also welded up the gearshift to the gearbox shaft now I’m finally happy with it , it’s still fully adjustable but will stop it coming lose or moving where it was previously held in position by a grub screw...
And a fresh coat of paint:

Southern GT40?
Set for delivery beginning of April and hope to have it built with in a year or ten.......I should think 9/10 never get finished once the get over 5 years and motivation wanes so very well done.
Do you have an idea of your budget to date?
And would you do it again or buy one instead?
I’d definitely go again though not another GT40, maybe a T70 or a Daytona!
Not calculated a total cost to date but if anyone (my wife) asks it’s roughly £5k...
Thanks very much, but Breaking News I’ve secured a a painter, car is booked in for the beginning of February.

Fabulous! Amazing build and ooof, that noise
I’m not sure if it’s any use to you but I had my Caterham resprayed by PJA coachworks near Heathrow a couple of months ago. They paint all sorts of cars and did a wonderful job. I am extremely fussy and cannot fault the workmanship, so very happy to recommend them. Drop me a PM if you want pictures of my car or any other details.

The final push...
On Friday I finally dropped the car off for paint, almost a year behind when I planned to have it done but it’s now finally happening.
Drove the car the 7 miles or to the body shop where I stripped the lights, windows and other bits off ready for them to get cracking.
Reckon it’s going to take 3 Months to get finished so I’ll keep the updates coming but the plan is to get the rear screen fitted while it’s in the Bodyshop and then I’ll refit the lights etc to allow me to drive home, all in time for our trip to the Classic in it...
To say I’m excited would be a massive understatement

Slowgress alert...
Got a few photos from the Bodyshop today.
They’re doing a cracking job of sorting out the panel gaps and by the end of this week they hope to have finished all body alignment and prep work and it will be ready for its first coat of primer.
All being well I should have it back in 3-4weeks

I've been checking on this topic every day to see where this is at in the paint process.
Thanks for the update, its going to be a slow 3-4 weeks......
3-4 weeks will fly I’m sure, especially as I have to sort the garage out for its return and yet have the longest list of DIY jobs prepared by Mrs Hoonigan before I’m allowed to start it Thanks for the update, its going to be a slow 3-4 weeks......
Can I enter this sweep stake?
Got another small update, the Bodyshop have been beavering away and extended the sills to accept the wide body rear clip, they’ve also fitted the body location cones to keep everything in place and aligned.
Getting very close to primer now so which is pretty bloody exciting

Ok the time has come drum roll please...
To say I’m excited is a massive understatement, I’m not sure it’s actually sunk in that it’s pretty much finished.
The Bodyshop have done a truly magnificent job and it is everything and more than I wanted.
I’ve a few bit to do still, rear ARB, the rear body vents and a bit of tweaking but all in all
It’s pretty much a finished car
Hope you like it as much as I do, especially as it’s not the normal Gulf colours, but the world would be a boring place if we were all the same eh...
