Thanks All for the replies and apologies for the delay in response.

Finally got around to it all, turns out the 456 received upgrades along the way with the early cars being fitted with 6x4 speakers up front in the door cards.

The later cars (still pre-M), such as mine, have 5x7 speakers fitted to the door:

The existing speakers are ripped so I could get them rebuilt or replace. Leaning towards replacing and finding some that have a 11.5cm space between mounting holes in a square.

Don’t suppose anyone has some options?

Existing speaker dimensions:

In progress now, went with some Focal 5x7’s up front and a new Sony head unit with cd / usb / Bluetooth with the benefit of having a removable front - this could be cabled up front but will see how I get on with it in the boot + iPhone app.

The wiring harness was modified by a nice guy at Byfleet Halfords after a respectable shop in the area wanted my car for 2 days...

So, no more disk changer or amp, saved about 5kg also

Good find and might need that as an extender if the Sony head unit Bluetooth needs more power. I’ve tried with a Bose Bluetooth speaker in the boot and could control it from my phone so should be fine.

It works! Doesn’t sound bad at all even with the factory rear speakers, happy to leave as is and would recommend to anyone with a broken pre-M stereo

Just ticked over 40k and will be back to Rardleys next month for a service and mot. Nothing much needed, new wing mirror glass and hopefully that’s about it (fingers crossed).

Found some more Paul McKenna stuff (2nd owner after Paul Weiland):

Engraved ‘magic wand’ surround

2nd MOT passed in my ownership with no advisories

And then.....

revs start hunting and left bank of engine shuts down :-(

Martin at Rardleys is fault finding and hoping it's just a sensor somewhere fingers crossed

Worth following Verde_Ferrari456 for a similar experience - early doors after purchasing through Collecting Cars (the nice green manual I posted above)

Oxygen sensor also laugh

Year 2 service and mot cost £2.5k. Just various ‘bits’ this year incl. wing mirror glass, window adjustment, various sensors/switches, custom hifi mount for new Sony Bluetooth head unit, window wipers fixed/adjusted, header tank mount.

Hope to keep using the 456 twice a week as long as there is no salt on the roads.

So, in the grand scheme of things, a fairly minor issue but wanting to attempt to fix this myself, this is the issue:

I cannot lock the car fully using the keyfob. There is a motor spinning noise if I lock the car using the key in the door and it will lock. If I lock the car with the keyfob, the passenger side locks but the drivers side does not. If I open the door the alarm goes off - so it thinks it’s locked.

I can lock the car manually using the key in the door or from inside by pushing the locking leaver down (central locking works in both scenarios).

Any advice?

Ps Gratuitous pic at Rardley having had several sensors replaced:

Just to add, I can lock the car with the key but I cannot unlock the car with the key… motor whirring noise when attempting to.

Anyway, nice drive today:

List of bits changed to cure the spluttering V12 - camshaft phase sensor, air mass meter, 4 x fuel injection/fuel pump relays, left hand oxygen sensor.

Just the bl00dy locks now…

Magnificent. Were all those senors done under the £2.5k bill?

Those running costs, while not ideal, don't seem too outrageous. I sunk double that into an E63 AMG trying to track down a misfire and it still wasn't fixed.
There was another £1k bill this week haha

I had this on my Monaro, the door lock motor itself was on the way out. The car would let you know there was a locking issue by 5 short rapid beeps of the horn. I could lock it manually with the key or pushing the button down as you have described but it wouldn't have enough juice to do it electronically. A common issue on those cars as I found out, something to do with the solenoid in the mechanism. Bought a new unit and swapped it out, lots of swearing on the first one trying to get my oversized hands into the door. Second time around was much easier knowing what to do!

Completely different car of course but seems a very similar scenario.
Thank you and this makes sense - could be a good minor project for me over Christmas

lets hope Ferrari used a mainstream part
Fingers crossed!

So far the sensors appear to be Bosch as are the fuel pumps (changed last year) and I think the locking actuators. Suspension is Bilstein, so lots of German bits, which funnily enough are the parts that fail.

Yes I can’t imagine any car being left to sit is a good thing, certainly not for the 90’s cars I’ve owned (Corrado VR6, 968 and the 456). In laws have a 1981 911 sc and that seems to be happy being left for 6 months at a time.

Potentiometer are probably from seats not quite so gigantic. I guess that’s the issue, the German parts are fine for the cars they are designed. Think I heard there is a Volvo wiper motor that controls the under bumper, rear spoiler. I need to go on an electrical course haha.

Interim maintenance unfortunately needed this year…

I have a squealing (I think) wheel bearing.

Now, is this really the price of a wheel bearing??

Any help appreciated :-)

Have tried a few suppliers, thanks for the recommendations.

I have at least established that there is a normal looking wheel bearing within the hub but no idea what the part number is - Ferrari Parts Maranello don’t either.

The complete part above is more like £1k so hoping I can find the individual bearing assuming the old one can be removed and a new one pressed in.

I can only see 157900 for the complete hub. Can see some numbers here on the bearing but Ferrari don’t sell it separately

Stunning car!

Prince Bernhard, the husband of our former Queen Juliana of the Netherlands was also a big fan of these and ordered one in a one-off green colour that wasn't available for the rest of Holland.

I collected scale models as a kid and remember having the 1:18 model of this, which had the plates of the Dutch royal household on it.

He also ordered a 500 Superfast and 400i in the same colour.

He certainly liked his green :-)
