The legacy has let me down. Driving out to the countryside to see a new premises for my wife, the battery died when we tried to leave.
I suspected it was low as it was getting a bit sluggish to start, but put that down to not using the car recently. I thought a long drive would fix it. However, it just didn't have the power to turn over. RAC would have been many hours so a few calls later I managed to get a friend to collect me, drive to to GSF (who had a battery in stock) and take me back.
On the plus side, it starts much more eagerly now.

Old Varta vs new Yuasa

Dead batteries are such a pain! Glad you had some friends local to help.
When i got the b5, the battery completely failed on me after a couple of days and a few times had to use gravity and careful planning to aid my getaways. Bloody nightmare. Plus to remove the battery i have to stand on the engine. rofl

Stand on the engine? Really? What a pain!

At least its not one of those glass firbe jobs, or something that requires a laptop to tell the car it has a new battery. Honestly, the simplest jobs these days are impossible. And I used to think the two batteries in an 8 series was a pain!

A chap a work was explaining how the battery in his audi had to be coded in or it wouldn't work. I had a poke around my mum's hybrid Toyota, anything goes wrong with that and I won't be fixing it in the drive. But it's a new Toyota, so that's fairly unlikely.

I would imagine someone who was stronger and anyone above 6ft might have a better hope of getting at it. But yes, feet on plenum chamber and hoist!

Eugh 2 batteries and coding in batteries. These all sound absolutely miserable. Long are the days of just resetting the clock.

One of the things I've really enjoyed about owning slightly older cars is the places you go and the people you meet.
Last night i popped out to pick up a half cage and some seats for the clio (a few hairy moments at brands put these higher up on the to do list). I met a really interesting chap who was prepping cars to run in the Le Man classic.
The legacy swallowed the seats with mounts, plus a cage with ease.

Summer time usually means a few miles tranporting the family, so an oil and filter change is on the cards. I've also found a set of cleaned and balanced injectors to go in, and i suspect the plugs need changing, as I've had the car two years and they've not been done since I've had it. It's also picked up an annoying squeak from the rear, possibly bush related.

I agree on the older cars thing, I had similar when picking up the AX exhaust. Nothing quite in the league of race preparing stuff for LMC though!

Those seats look like a good addition to the Clio. Will they be a permanent swap over or just something for track days?

Impressive load carrying capacity in the Legacy too!

The man i bought the legacy from built V8s for historic GT40s...
The legacy just swallows stuff. Keyboards, drum kits. Bikes, all the kit for a week camping.
As for the clio, I'm going to see how much of a hassle it is the change the seats over. The rollcage is an interesting design, it fits to existing mount points so no welding/drilling necessary and i should be able to retain most of the interior.
A friend swapped his seat over every track day, but he hasn't got children and a wife that works weekends.
And i suspect the new odd noise on the legacy is the front ARB bush.

11 rolls of loft insulation in there. Could have got at least 2 more in there if needed. They are truly amazing cars.

Summer is usually a busy time for the legacy, and with trips to Wales, Sheffield and Brighton already booked I think this year will be the same.
So, first up a quick service.

Castrol is recommended for boxer porsches, so hopefully it'll be ok in the H6.
Changing the oil on this car is incredibly easy, the only issue is that oil poured in takes ages to show on the dipstick. Despite the horizontal mounting it's possible to pre fill the filter and get it on without making an mess, if you're quick.

I've also stuck a goldplug in. The car is over 140,000 miles so there's bound to be some wear.

That all went so well I thought I'd give the headlights a clean up with the 3M kit I'd previously used on the clio. Cleaning headlights is always satisfying.

And the clunk/squeak? That was the boot latch not working properly. I've given the exposed bits a lube, but it doesn't feel right. I think a more in depth tinker is needed.

I'm really pleased with the lights . This is the second set I've done with the 3m kit and now I'm tempted to re-do the clio as compared to these they're a bit streaky.
We'll have to see how they last. Normally a few months of summer sunshine is enough to make them cloud over.

I've just purchased some replacement lenses for my Gen5, pretty sure you can buy them for the Gen4 too. Let me know if that is of any interest and I'll find you a link smile

Looking good after that headlight treatment, and presumably psychologically (and actually) feeling good after the service.
I’d never encountered the filling the filter trick until chatting to an old school mechanic who worked on the AX a couple of years ago.
I’m now a complete convert even with the slight mess that comes with orientating a horizontal filter!

Hope the trips go well in the coming months!

Whn i first bought the legacy there were quite a few bits of trim missing or broken. ISOFIX covers, the rear cup holders etc.
But today I've ticked off another bit from the boot roof.

No idea what it should be used for and I could have probably just glued the old one shut. But it's one less broken thing.
All i need now is the leather bit the passengers seatbelt goes through...

So 500 miles done in 3 days in the legacy.
It's been to north Wales where the scenery is amazing and the roads just incredible. Normally on these trips I take the family camper, but I'm really glad I went in the Subaru.
It looks at home in the scenery.

And due to heavier than expected traffic on the way there I saw this unprecedented number:

And on a trip to zip world even parked next to another legacy:

The only fly in the ointment was the brakes. They've never been good, and after some spirited driving now feel really poor. So bad they need some investigation.

Just had a thought...
Seems as if my 2005 3.0r is ULEZ compliant. Does that make it more valuable in London now?

Hope so. It also meets the low emission zone in Sheffield. Which, given it does about 18mpg around town, feels wrong.
