I concur.

I doubt the airport will roll out the red carpet for a - literal - pedestrian such as I (and I'll be carrying a rucksack - whoever heard of someone important carrying their own luggage?!) but I'll see what I can do!

I asked the concierge at my ridiculously expensive hotel for a garage recommendation. After overcoming her initial bemusement that any of her guests would drive here in his own car and moreover that his own car would be an old shed, she sent me to a place round the corner called Sport Tech 83. I knew everything was going to alright when I saw the yard. A G-Wagen. A 124. Several 210s. At least four 107s. A couple of 129s. Inside was immaculate in an unpretentious way, a couple of newer Mercs and a 107 undergoing work. And a 997 GT3.

The proprietor was the size of a house. He drove the car and diagnosed the bad wheel bearing immediately. In French he confirmed that he knew the 124 inside out. I sensed this was an understatement. He expressed the view that they are excellent cars. He warmed to me when I recited the chassis number from memory. He’s going to do it on Wednesday afternoon. Interestingly he was able to order the parts from Merc on his computer. I feel like hanging around there for the rest of my holiday. A dream garage. I’ll take photos next time I’m there.

Please do - sounds like a great place!

As a matter of interest, which bearing is bad - front right?

I'll liking the sound of it too. Glamourous women and a local classic car expert; bases all covered there.

I like how CDG has become the thread mature, eligible and single gent. Understandable with both the SLC and a Lexus really. I met the former mrs CDG and had a fine cup of tea when buying the SL (next on the “to deal with” list!).

Less of the 'mature' please, young Mr 0a. Cheeky whippersnapper!

I checked the MOT history for A2 VPE. For shame, Mr a, for shame.

By finding Baister-sur-Mer the concierge has done a great service by giving us even more encouragement to take our clapped-out barges to the Cote d'Azur.

It's resting at the moment. Cars need to rest.

Particularly with that bloody MB issue with these engines - you don't use them for a second and you need a new distributer.

190 is being done, and the SL comes after that :0

A2 VPE looks fantastic after the respray though.

Sport Tech 83 on the D562 near Fayence-Tourrettes. The proprietor gave me a lift back in a modern E coupé. He’s been doing it 35 years. Started on Rolls Royce, did Maseratis and Alfas before Mercs. Looks after 3 Gullwings. I have the pleasure lunch at Cap Eden-Roc this afternoon but I’d really rather be at this garage!

Nice!

I am slightly surprised, though, by the number of dark-coloured cars down there. I'd have thought they'd generally go for lighter shades.

Love the covered terrace over the showroom, a good spot to survey one's collection of barges from!

I've seen a few places like this down in that neck of the woods, and the owners generally live on-site above the garage, so that is probably his. Living the dream!

It would make a great private residence for a collection of barges

It may be worth firing a recommendation to the MB Owners Club directory.

Absolutely. Arguably too much living accommodation.

That part of the World looks like a prime location for classic Benz.

€230 all done. And what a relief. Every time I went out in it I had visions of the wheel falling off. A little mechanical fettling seems to be obligatory on our motoring holidays.

Tomorrow I am getting up at 5am in order to drive the Col de Turini. I'd quite like to do the Gorges de Daluis as well but (as we noted in the Barge thread) France is a rather big place. I am under orders to be back by 10am. I may do the Daluis/Cian route on Friday if I feel like getting up early.
