FYI you can't have a Tick Performance T56 Magnum Level 5 'box (like I have) and a LS9 because there isn't enough space in a bell housing for both of them....
ask me how I know
You need a VXR8 bell housing and a spacer to create the extra room. Mine is a standard T56 and it's the only thing that hasn't broken. I guess your modified version has a shorter input shaft? ask me how I know
Trouble with after market twin plates is they wear quickly and therefore drag, making it difficult to change gear over time. I had the same happen on my McLeod.
LS9 clutch is a completely different beast. It's bigger and the slave has more travel, that's why it takes up more space...but it works.

TBH giving that an LS9 is good for around about 900 torques (maybe) and my ACT is certified for that amount already I think I'm going to stick with what I have.
I need new friction plates in mine this year so I'll buy a new clutch and then send the old one off to be reconditioned.

I'm new to all this LS engine and T56 gearbox chat so please forgive the newb questions. I believe the T56 is a bit old and agricultural - is that right?
WTF is a Tick Performance T56 Magnum Level 5?
I see some chat here about the LS9. Are we just talking about the clutch or is someone going to buy an LS9 for their Monaro?
T56 is a bit agricultural but a decent clutch does help. I have an LS9 clutch in mine which requires a few modifiacations including a new bell housing, mount and spacer. Gear stick also needs to be moved slightly.
Engine is a supercharged, forged LSA with TVS2300 putting out about 824HP so anything can be made to fit with enough effort.

This is a Tick Performance T56 Magnum Level 5 Gearbox
Most people pushing big power are using twin plate clutches which are very heavy. An LS9 clutch is a standard GM part designed to handle at least 700 torques and up and has a completely stock feel hence why it's a very desirable upgrade over the usual LS7 (again GM stock clutch good for upto 650 torques) or a twin plate clutch.

The T56 gearbox is an agricultural shift for sure but you learn to cope with it. It's much better when warm but very clunky when cold.

Ligenfelter and Katech both do upgrades on the LS9 clutch so it will take over 950lbs. Mine's a stock LS9 and I've had no problems so far. However, I only have about 550 lbs at the wheels with 620whp at 7000rpm. Much easier on drive train and traction. I once had 770lbs at the wheels and it was like driving on ice. This is a Tick Performance T56 Magnum Level 5 Gearbox

My car is currently putting out 770ft/lb at the moment at 4600RPM but the plan is bigger turbos and more boost later on hence the need for beefy clutch.
but awesome motor all the same!
I had an LS2 in an RX7 for a year or two. It was great. I hated the T56 gearbox, and that was after I had put hundreds of pounds of different fluids through it. I took it apart in the end and replaced the synchros. That fixed the grinding into 2nd but it was still the worst part of the car overall. Or was it. Actually the door cards and other rattles and creaks were pretty close.

I was being a little bit pedantic about "torques". ;-)

Sorry I know Torques is something Clarkson uses and I've picked up a very bad habit but awesome motor all the same!

I've got an RX8 that I want to do an LS conversion on but I'm not sure the shift will suit the car
Sorry Mark, I promise I'll stop thread-jacking your thread now

Until the clutch shows signs of weakness or slippage...you dont need to upgrade.
Often they will hold a lot more than their rating, and there are variables with vehicle weight, usage, etc etc
The T2 is rated at 950lbft...which is a fair amount. The T3 1125lbft. Although I suspect pedal effort with that one be pretty heavy.

Strictly speaking, if you can get ACT to sell it...upgrade from T2 to T3 is the pressure plate only.
The above retain the organic disc, so would still be totally smooth to drive with.

Its all very well upgrading the clutch to cope with huge power but if its spinning the wheels because the tyres cant grip the clutch is working well enough
I was told the standard fit AP clutch in my focus wouldn't last 5 mins with the torque I have but its done 60k so far without issue.
