With the best will in the world you won’t be anywhere near that torque figure in the real world with a normally aspirated 1600cc engine. You can take those with a huge pinch of salt

As some comparative figures:

Civic EK9 B16- 185hp & 118lbs.ft peak
Suzuki Swift Sport 1.6 136hp & 118lbs.ft

Whilst mods might release top end power you won’t do a huge amount with peak torque.

Most N/A 2L motors struggle to crack 150lbs.ft

As a comparison exercise it looks like the SM filter is an improvement though!

Yeah I’m not too worried about numbers, just done it for the sake of the test. All I’m worried about is the way it drives and it’s certainly feels better on the new intake!

Went out with a friend who is a photographer a few evenings to get some pictures of the Lupo with a decent sunset. Safe to say these pictures turned out incredible!

Another track evening completed at Snetterton last night, sort of...

The weather forecast said rain all evening, so I went on my wet tyres Michelin PS3's. You can guess what happened, it stayed dry all night! The car still felt great though, just couldn't do as many laps at once. 3-4 laps was the limit before they started over heating.

This is where it went south, it was the last session of the night, came out of 'Agestini', shifted into 3rd then the car instantly ran on 3 cylinders. Limped it back into the pits to inspect. Turned the car off, tried to start again but nothing. I could hear it was down a cylinder. Luckily a friend had his trailer with him so I got it home then inspected today, compression test results for cylinder 3 was what I expected. Absoluely no compression at all. I put a borescope down it and the pistions look brand new. I think it's slipped a tooth and knocked the timing out and bent a valve!

Never mind ey, hopefully have it stripped and rebuilt in a couple of weeks. Be back on the road before you know it!

Had a good battle with my mate in his FN2 Civic Type R, they are incredible matched around Snetterton, i'll leave a link to the lap below.

If the engine is beyond reasonable repair and you fancy something different I can recommend the 2.0 16v ABF on OEM management. With a lightweight fly it’s a lovely engine. Had one in a mk2 Golf GTi. Torque down low and revs out cleanly. Would be a hoot in a Lupo.
From what we can tell I think it will just be a head rebuild and good to go hopefully. 2.0 ABF is something that has crossed my mind a few times, maybe one day. Just want to get the car back up and running to keep enjoying it!

Whatever you do, do not put a 1.8T in it! The ABF is great. Mine was out of an Ibiza rather than mk3 Golf, and was said to have a lighter valve train. Without the cat and a 2.25” Jetex exhaust it pulled well over stock figures on a Dyno Dynamics dyno. It also span up nicely with a lightweight flywheel and an 020 box.

On the later digifant mk2 GTI Golf it was a straight swop. 3 plugs on the fuse box and on the same engine mounts. It was so easy. I’m not sure about the Lupo.
A 1.8t won’t be going any where near it don’t worry! Hate the engines! I’m just sticking with what I already have, it performs so well and has been so reliable for 3-4 years now I don’t want to jeopardise that!

I honestly dont see the point in an engine conversion for this, its a lot of hassle and money.

If you have bent some vlaves then maybe some light head work with a set of cams wouldnt go a miss.
I took the inlet manifold off this afternoon to get a better look and there is definitely a bent valve! Hopefully I can get away with just a head rebuild! It's already got a set of Piper fast road/track cams in it smile

As said above, the car already has a set of Piper fast road/track cams in it smile The current setup performed so well I will be keeping it how it was, don't fancy the faff of an engine swap!

As you can see in the pic below, a valve is definitely bent!

Managed to get the head off the car during the week to inspect the damage. All I found was a bent valve and broken valve spring retainer, no other damage to the head or pistons, I’ve been lucky that’s for sure! So I got all the bits needed ordered from
VW, everything came in Friday and by Saturday afternoon it’s back up and running sweeter than ever! smile

Top work!!!

I admire people who are able to do such a repair themselves and with no big fuss (and at relatively cheap cost, not taking own labour into account)!
Doing an oil and filter change, replacing a fan belt or some brake pads are about all I manage myself... And I already feel like a mechanic superhero doing only that boxedin
I would love to say I done all of the work but a good friend of mine is a very good mechanic and he helped me along the way! Still very satisfying knowing most of it was done by me!

Did you get the roll centre adjusted?
No unfortunately not I’ve not been able to find anyone to make the correct kit. One kit I had custom made fouled on the brake disc annoyingly

Been a while since I last updated this, not loads has changed but a couple of nice touches that makes a difference. The first thing is to do with the Coolerworx shifter, I’ve always found it to be a bit short in the Lupo so I spoke to a friend who does machining work to see if we could come up with something. This is what we come up with, a 50mm aluminium extension which makes a world of difference. I’ve gone on to sell a few of these to other Coolerworx owners, I had them Anodised too to match the original finish of the shifter. I only have a picture fitted of the prototype version that I painted black but it gives you an idea.

The next little change is I’ve added the 6 point part to my Schroth harnesses. I’ve always found with 4 points that as soon as you try get them really tight on track they always want to ride up your body which obviously isn’t very safe. I used the spreader plates and eye bolts provided to bolt through the floor which was a a fairly easy process.

For all of you that don’t follow me on Instagram you probably don’t know about the mega weekend I have just had. We headed out to the Nürburgring on Thursday morning, had a relaxed day on the Thursday travelling down. Done some TF laps Friday evening, 4 I managed in a couple of hours, the car felt incredible so I couldn’t wait for a full day of TF on the Saturday. Managed another 7 laps that day without any issues!

I also met up with Misha from Apex to do a video on the car if you haven’t seen it already, it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had, quite scary being a passenger in your own car around the Nürburgring. I won’t spoil it too much, you’ll have to watch a video which I’ll leave a link below!

https://youtu.be/fW-3MGG6jdc

We travelled home on the Monday morning, all the way from Nürburgring to Cadwell Park for a trackday on the Tuesday, call me mad but it was never planned to be like that haha.

The trackday at Cadwell went fantastic too, again, zero issues with the car after 60-70 laps of Cadwell.

All in all I done just over 1800 miles in the trip smile I’ll leave all the pictures from the trip below smile

The car is going around there great and a lot quicker than some other quoted quick cars .

Having been lucky to have driven the ring a fair few times that must have been a bit of a heart stopper but well caught by Misha .

That is some effort to do the full drive back and then do another track day as im ready for a beer and bed after the trip home .
Yeah it definitely surprises a fair few people!

Experience definitely came into play there, if he’d of let of for just a brief second it would of been game over!

It was definitely not my smartest move but as the old saying goes, you only live once haha.

Well caught by Misha, but that could have been a big 'un... I'd be getting that cage you mentioned you weren't, for future visits!
(especially when you said you'd had a near miss before).
Yeah it could of been bad. The reason I’m put off by a cage is the car is still mainly a road car and I don’t like the idea of driving a caged car without a helmet. Also, I couldn’t get all my stuff into the back of the car for a Nürburgring trip, I take my spare set of wheel with me and they take up 90% of the room haha!

Took a few interior pictures with a new lens I’m trying on my Nikon DSLR, quite pleased with how they look. Door cards are getting trimmed in black Alcantara soon with black stitching to keep things subtle as the standard material is horrible.

I’ve also just had a small silencer put back in the exhaust as it’s a little too loud for me these days (showing my age) lol. It sounds much better now, not loads quieter but just right and it’s lost the drone from inside of the car.

Whilst at the Nürburgring, my MAP sensor decided to fail, luckily on the last day. It happened the year before too, I spoke to a friend and he said it’s likely because these engines breathe quite heavily, especially once tuned, that the MAP sensor could but getting clogged up with oil. So I thought I’d eliminate the problem completely and install a neat little catch can setup.

Changed out the brake pads yesterday too, Nürburgring and Cadwell finished the old ones off. Stuck to what I know and what work wells, Ferodo DS1.11, at only £105 it’s a bargain too.

The car got a well deserved oil change today, I tend to do them every 4k but this time it was at 3 after the weekend it just had! Recently purchased the Sealey oil funnel, my god I wish I bought sooner. Made life so easy lol. The ECS magnetic sump plug had picked something up, not sure what it was but it’s doing the job.

after years of following this thread and the OP on Insta, finally gonna scratch the itch and go look at one this weekend. Have wanted a small fizzy revvy NA hatch for ages and I missed out on 106 GTI, didnt think I'd find a decent one of these but looks like I might have. Fingers crossed.
All the best! It’s hard to find a decent one these nowadays! They need a few mods to make them come alive that’s for sure smile

Recently done a trackday at Donnington, my first time there and what a track it is, not 100% suited to the Lupo but Craner Curves is so much fun! Completed 64 laps in the day, the car was faultless and surprised so many people.

I’ve just finished a well over due paint correction on the car too, it’s been around 2.5-3 years since I’ve touched the car with a polisher. I used Sonax perfect finish and a Yellow Rupes pad. I decided to put a ceramic coating on the car, Carbon Collective Oracle, the slickness and gloss it has left behind is incredible and should be good for 2-3 years. I’ll leave some differences down below smile
