Can you take the old one to a friendly parts place and get them to compare it and get the right one off the shelf rather than order through parts numbers? Might be a safer bet. I think it would count as an essential journey if there was any question.
In an ideal world, yes, but the old belt was binned a long time ago.

The two key DIY mechanics lessons I have learned so far ...:

(i) don't bin the old part until you know the new part fits
(ii) bag up bolts with parts or you end up with a box of bolts and a bunch of parts and no idea which bolt goes with which part ...

Ah. Right. Have you thought of signing up on 205gtidrivers.com? There are plenty of other Peugeots apart from GTis that people get advice about. There's a section for TU engines if I recall.

btw, I also find it useful to take pics on my phone of any part that I'm just about to remove so I can see where it goes back (but I've still got plenty of 'spares' without a home).

There is no rule requiring journeys to be essential. If you think that there is such a rule that is because you have been misled about the rules by the Government. The actual rule is that you need a reasonable excuse to go out. Going to buy car parts is a reasonable excuse to go out.

Thanks for the clarification.

OP, how about this - if you measure the diameter of both the cam and crank pulleys, and then the distance between centres of them, you should be able to draw up a cardboard template of the overall belt 'path' or shape. Then you could take that instead - or maybe use some string or something to plot around the perimeter of the template, so you can see the sort of length belt you're looking for, once you've tied it into a loop.

Where are you, OP? My mobile mech is in Worcs. He is about 30 quid an hour and is the problem solver supreme.

SE9. I am quite tempted to get a mobile mechanic round to confirm my timing belt looks properly fitted before I turn the key for the first time...

Excellent. Will measure.

I actually ordered one this morning after using the parts catalogue someone linked earlier to find the OEN. Let's see if it fits...

Peugeot are a nightmare for having multiple parts for one application, especially when the TU engine was used for 20+ years across loads of models (and brands!). Hopefully after a bit of measuring you can get it sorted.

I know a bloke who has classic car storage in SE 11 and is a decent mech.

Have a bit of faith in yourself smile Besides, if it all goes horribly wrong it will speed up the 16v conversion.

I actually sold that engine hoist I bought earlier in the thread as I kept tripping over it in my small shed. Let's hope I don't suddenly find myself needing one...

In fact, given the belt only drives the alternator, I could probably go start the engine now and see if it runs, no...?

Aux belt on this morning and key turned. After it being a little hesitant to catch, its alive! Let it run for a few minutes before turning it off as there was a LOT of white smoke from the exhaust and a little from the engine itself. Normal water/muck/condensation burning off from it having sat for a while or possibly something more sinister...?

The problem you have with 205's is they existed before the current catalogues. My official Peugeot login (dealer parts) wont even refine the parts down to your specific model. Your vehicle data just shows as 'Carburettor TU3'. If i look at the section for 'Alternator and fixings' it shows me every combination of alternator from every 205... Its a bit of a pain. There must be 5-8 different belts depending on configuration.
