Just heard from the garage about the brakes. The rear brake lines has split, in the section above the fuel tank. So, fuel tank off, exhaust off, propshaft off, possibly rear sub frame need to come down. That's going to be expensive.

Somewhere buried deep in the grey matter I seem to remember a recall for this.

Well, with a flicker of hope in my heart I contacted my local Subaru dealer, who said the only outstanding recall was for a passenger airbag. It looks like the recalls were from 2013/14 and my car was done back then.
Hopes dashed.

The legacy is back and I'm £700 poorer.
But I've got new hardlines and flexis, so everything from the junction in the cabin up to the caliper pipe is new, aĺl OEM parts from subaru.
No pictures but the old parts the garage shared were a rusty mess.
It might be my imagination, or just the recent memory or the brakes not working at all, but it now the legacy stops far, far better than before. I suspect i'd been loosing pressure from those pipes for a while.

I've had a check under the car for anything else that might interfere with the legacy's family duties.
I found this earth strap on the drivers side, from the engine block to the chassis rail.

It didn't look very robust and a quick tug later it fell apart. Fortunately I had some generic straps that were the right size.
So, fingers crossed for no more car related stress this summer.

Not quite trouble free motoring from the legacy. Slow speed maneuvers were creating some horrible noises from the front. I never google heath symptoms as the results are always awful and lead to sleepless nights worrying. Googling the noises suggested either new top mounts or a new gearbox, which was something to think about at 2am.
Fortunately it was new mounts. These were fitted by the ever helpful, friendly and reliable mobile mechanic Jody.
The old ones had some cracks in the rubber, but felt very solid. They're a lot more substantial than those on the clio...

I’m glad it turned out to be something moderately simple (that said, I don’t enjoy doing top mounts).
Much of a difference apart from the lack of noise?

These were fairly tricky for a top mount, the strut bolts control the camber, they're awkward to get spring compressors on and the spring sits in a rubber divot.
Might be a placebo, but the steering feels more accurate with the new mounts in. But to be honest, I'm just glad it wasn't too expensive.

I couldn't see any part numbers or branding on the old ones the new ones (from ICP) were the same. These were from the low mileage shocks and spring I got from a JDM that was being broken.

The legacy has been doing what it does best, lugging family and other odd shaped things around while being entertaining to drive.
A boot full of trichology equipment this morning:

And some really nice new wheels for the clio the afternoon.

I've got a return trip to wales next weekend, here's hoping it doesn't generate a big bill this time...

If there's one thing rarer than a UK Manual Spec B, it's probably someone who drove it off the forecourt brand new, and still has it. Hello.

Fark me, I cannot express how good this car has been to me. We've had numerous other family cars in the intervening period mainly Minis & BMWs, all of which have been rubbish and expensive by comparison. Now on an Outback, and that has also been pretty good to us, although the CVT is meh. The Legacy has been used, and often abused; the bodywork is very tired to say the least, often the result of fumbling kayaks and our Drystone walls (oops). People use the term legend or epic far too much these days, but for me, this car has been both in my N=1 experience.

Since the day I collected it and drove it back to Germany on 14 April 2007, the following has needed doing:

Tyres & Pads (well yeah!)
Front shocks in 2020 (MOT fail)
Exhaust mid section Aug 2023
Rear wiper hasn't worked for years (shrugs shoulders).
THAT'S IT; still on the original discs, which is frankly epic ;-) This car is like the Top Gear Hi Lux.

I don't know what I'm going to do when it goes; it will be like losing a loved one.

I had an M340i as a work hire car last week; 400 mile round trip to Lancs & back, mainly in the wet. It was sh*t compared to the Legacy in the wet. Run flats, crashy ride, an extra 390kg and that Driver Assist making things very sketchy at 70+mph over the wet cats eyes on the M6.

Give me a 2000s Scooby on a wet B Road any day

It's a really good car. It just does everything I need really well. It's practical, good to drive, really comfortable and doesn't make anyone travel sick. Shame about the tax and fuel economy though...

Anyway. The most recent trip to wales was successful (for the car). Despite the weather.
25% gradient and tight bends in Harlech when it was raining so hard the wipers couldn't clear it? No problem.
Unmade roads in and out the deserted campsite? Easy.

And when the view is like this, the boot makes a good impromptu picnic area:

I forgot my old login, so had to rejoin; otherwise I'd have posted a picture. 13 days until I can.

When was this Forum last updated? Before I collected my Legacy by the looks of it!
