Is there petrol in the bowl? It will take a while for it to pull through at first.
I pulled the fuel line and turned the car over and did get fuel through the line. Not entirely sure how to check if there is petrol in the bowl ?

It's definitely a fuel delivery problem - a bit of easy start in the neck and it threatens to grumble into life and then dies.

Yeah you're right 72273 which doesn't throw up much on Google but French forums suggest is the 34 PBISA 17.

Fuel is coming through fuel line if i disconnect and turn car over but no strong smell of fuel when trying to start. Seems to be a fuel through carb problem.

I dont think float height was adjustable.

Guess i need to take it apart and see if i can spot what's going on...

One step forward two steps back

Engine is running very odd

It was running okay but with a bit off odd mechanical noise

After idling for five or ten minutes it started to make a very loud crackling noise. Sounded like it was coming from outside the engine almost?

I turned the engine off pretty quickly but it makes the noise again if i start it back up.

Dont see how it can be anything other than the carb but why would the carb make the engine make such noises?

Oh no.

I'm concerned i know what the problem is.

A screw went missing and i couldnt find it.

Did it fall into the intake manifold...

Nope very much a mechanical noise, not at all rhythmic. As if a small screw was being violently thrown about the inside of the engine...

Hopefully if it is the case it is in inlet manifold. I have an endoscope camera thing so will have a look inside cylinders and inlet manifold. Fingers crossed...

Look, it's not a valuable car/engine. If I was in your shoes I'd get the screw out, blow any debris out as best you can, or try to get a narrow flexible tube attached to a vacuum cleaner down there, get any metal particles out.

Then I would just make sure everything was back together as it should be, and start up again. Engines can be a lot more robust than you'd think - you might get away with it. Worst case scenario - damaged valve + piston face? Best case - no symptoms and a running engine.
Thanks. That's my thinking. Get screw and debris out via spark plug hole, compression test (know someone who can lend me one), and if compression is okay then see if it runs. It's going to be beyond my limited skill set to swap engines/valves/heads.

If it isn't okay...not sure. Probably just sell/scrap and accept it was a reasonably expensive mistake...
