What other motors did the Interceptor compete with when new? Were they hugely expensive?

Bristol 410/411s. Aston V8s. E Type FHCs. Maserati Mexicos, and other Italian GTs. Maybe Staaaaaaaaaags, a bit. Mustangs, I suppose.

Interceptors were quite expensive, but I cannot recall how much either in 1970s values or converted to today's rates. Schlebs liked them.

FFs cost a bundle, but had no real comparators.

Just had a quick look in the Brooklands Interceptor book...

Motor mag for 15/10/66 quotes :

Interceptor £3,742 11s 2d (inc. £699 3s 3d purchase tax)

FF £5,339 19s 9d (inc. £996 19s 9d purchase tax)

Just had a quick look at that Nyree Dawn Porter pic too.... priceless ;O)

Edit : at a rough guess, I'd say a Fixed Head E-Type would have been about £2,500 or so by late '66. To put them both into perspective a 1275 Cooper S would have been about £850!

That wouldnt be far off DB6 money the cost of the FF I think

Edited: Just checked and on launch the db6 was £ 4,998 (Saloon), £ 4,194 (Convertible)

Odd that a Volante was cheaper than a saloon/coupe

Moving on to 1970 a S11 Interceptor would have cost you £5,838 2s 6d (inc. £1,368 2s 6d PT) and the S11 FF was a wapping £7,705 1s 5d (inc. £1,805 1s 5d PT)

Scary stuff...

So are they radials? They look a bit like crossplies.
Sorry, but they do not even vaguely look like crossplies!

I'm sure I've seen the very first Interceptor in a for sale ad recently ('HEA 1D') asking price was £75k...

Beginning to wish I'd left that Brooklands Interceptor book in the cupboard now - would so love to have one if circumstance allowed.

I have not fitted double dip headlamps, but would do so if I had the spare cash. An intermittent wiper setting would be a boon for my car also.
My Bristol has double dip headlights (not original, all halogen) and they are a fantastic improvement. It shouldn't be an expensive mod. Make sure the wiring can handle the draw – mine are rewired directly to the battery controlled by relays after the dipswitch failed. Some people have told me they are not legal, and I've heard of people failing MoTs because of double-dip headlights, but although I've never had a problem with officialdom, I have had with other drivers. They are now very carefully aimed so that the centre pair are pointing a bit low to both give a good spread and to avoid dazzling other road users. As far as I understand it, they are technically fine for the MoT, but whether they contravene any construction and use regulation I don't know.

In relative price to other cars, it's cheaper today than back in 1970.

In 1970, that Mk2 cost about 5 x times the cost of a Ford Lotus-Cortina, and todays equivilent of a Lotus-Cortina isn't a 5th of £75k.

ABS and 4WD for twenty quid - that makes the FF quite a bargain then, given the far more complicated technology in it!

IIRC C&U regs say the dipped beam must be in the outside set of lamps, or lamps within a set distance from the side of the car meaning only the outer lamps can be legal. I doubt anyone would worry about it though.

With a Hella halogen conversion on the Interceptor you certainly don't need a double dip system, and you're far better off without.

With a double dip everyone thinks you're on high beam and will be constantly flashing you.

TBH the 1970 stylee lights on the Fabboceptor are OK ish as they are. The lights on my 1981 Lancia Beta are totally pants.

Now that I have managed to reduce my parts pile I have decided to start on the engine so far I have stripped some ancillaries and covers and lifted it onto a stand.

Meanwhile my servo and front callipers have come back from refurb looking great.

Ive still got a long way to go but it is now starting to resemble a car again smile

Seems like a bargain if you look at what that money will buy today.
