Bugger, I was going to spark a discussion about ironed vs non-ironed shirts! hehe

Subscribed to your YouTube channel btw. It is very relaxing and slightly hypnotic!
Ha! Ive just driven an hour to a meeting and filmed some of it where I ramble on and sometimes abuse other drivers so I’d better not post that!

Any Porsche specialist will give you a list of things wrong as long as your arm with a bill for as much as your house.

Its whats they do, it seems most 911 owners are perfectionists with deep pockets and they are well used to serving that market.

Treat it like any other old car, i.e. fix things that go wrong and you will be fine.

The 3.4 is a fine, reliable motor for good mileages. Yes is it will be a bit worn at that mileage but what wouldn't.

You could easily break the 996 for more than you paid!
A specialist said exactly that, you could break it and make more money right now (5k for engine and gearbox). But I’m totally going for just keeping it going and enjoying it and not aiming for perfection

Good Videos! It's made me miss mine a lot.

Mine was very similar to your but with 60k on it and only 1 previous owner. A 99 C4. The problem i had with it was that i was living in constant fear of something big going wrong with it. The reality was that it actuality cost almost nothing to run in the 3 years that i had it.
The alternator failed on it. But after some research i discovered it was only the regulator and was replaced for less than a tenner.
Other than that it was just oil and tyres.

Things that used to worry me about it were:
It would used about a liter of oil every 2000 miles.
There was always mayo in the filler neck (not a lot) more so when it was cold. I think this was normal.
The oil pressure always used to dip a little when i turned a roundabout. Does anyone elses do that?
When the oil was down to a quarter full i used to get a tappity sound from the rear right bank if i drove the car hard.
I found myself ALWAYS listening for noises.

In the end i chopped it in (for the same price as i'd bought it for 3 years ago) for an S5. Which is nice but it's just not the same. And it's as bad if not worse on oil!!

I'll continue to watch with interest. I've had itches to get another 911. smile
I know exactly what you mean, I’m constantly listening out for noises (of which there are a lot!) and watching the oil pressure and temperature gauges...hopefully I’ll be able to relax soon

Yeah, I believe it was on the original engine at about 240,000 miles when he killed it. If he'd been clued up enough to fit a baffled sump it could well still be going. But then his channel is all about doing silly things that cost him.

These cars have a terrible reputation for going pop and eating your money but if you search any of the usual sales sites you'll find plenty for sale and many will have mileage that shows they've been used as an everyday car.

I've just bought one so I'm trying to convince myself it's not going to cost £10k a year to run.
Good luck!

You won’t. I’ve had mine two years and still do this permanently!

Mine was £9k 2 years ago and I thought I got a steal that won’t depreciate (similar miles too, 155k).... you’ve done very well to get a price that starts with a 6!
Thank you. When I first started looking for one I really believed the prices couldn’t get any lower. They might stay this low for a while so i thought I’d take the hit and see if it was worth it for people to start enjoying the many that are available. A couple of my friends are now tempted but I’ve said they can’t blame me if something goes wrong! smile

I did originally think the decision to remove the YT link a bit mean spirited, but after reading 9 pages of crap i'm in agreement. I was waiting for it to get going, yet it never did...
This thread has no interesting content whatsoever from the OP. Call me oldschool, but I like to read something entertaining and with pictures, not some discussion of two other places on the internet.
You might as well just leave this thread completely and discuss it on Youtube.
2/10.

Here’s a pic of the exhaust tips I didn’t like and removed smile

In all seriousness though, I do appreciate any constructive feedback and see where you’re coming from. It’s difficult to keep the updates, pics and videos coming as regularly as I’d like but going to try and up my game next week. I like the discussion on here and I hope more people take advantage of the price dip on these cars (maybe not the pit luck approach I took though)

Well I for one like this thread, it’s opened a discussion about how there are people out there who are willing to take a punt on something like this and despite all the naysayers it may be able to run it without incurring significant bills. This follows the spirit of the Brave Pill articles that PH publishes every week.

I like the fact that it gives two fingers to all the anal Porsche lot who insist that the cars have to be serviced by specialists and that if you’re not spending 3k a year on maintenance you’re clearly a cheapskate who doesn’t deserve to drive one. At the end of the day it’s a lump of metal and there to be enjoyed.

Not all readers cars threads have to be about every step of maintenance with 200 HD photos of a rear hub rebuild!
Thank you, that’s pretty much bang on as to what I was trying to do

I've had my 1998 996 C2 now for almost 2 years. I'm currently using it as a daily driver. I spent nothing on mine at first and then a lot and since nothing. Let's see how long that lasts. Anyway the point is this stop worrying about it and just drive the thing. I paid twice what you paid and then the same again in repairs. So you really dont have anything to worry about. Just drive it I and enjoy it. I think its quite cool driving around in a 21 year old Porsche. Which is one of the reasons why I enjoy it. Good luck and here is a pic of mine.

That is awesome!

Yes - I am. Magazine is okay and the Porsche events can be interesting depending on local crowd. I use my membership mainly for the discount to the Silverstone classic and infield parking plus stand access. Also do the chatsworth and concours events. Usually pretty good events with like minded people (only a few people totally up themselves and using car as penis extension)

Thank you, good to know smile

TIPEC seems to be the place for owners of older cars. A good pal of mine is a member in the NW, I've been to a few events and they're exceptionally knowledgeable in terms of running the older motors.

Enjoy and good luck!
Thanks. Not heard of that one. Is my car going to look a bit lame at either of these events?

At last years Chatsworth someone turned up in a 944 that she had bought the weekend before. None of the tyres matched. The front wheels were also different to the rears and both "sets" had seen better days. The interior looked as though it had been used as a squat for most of its life. It was an utter shambles of a car but she loved it. It was her first Porsche and lots of people were congratulating her and offering lots of useful advice.

You will be fine. You will always find someone as enthusiastic as you. Come to Chatsworth on the 30th smile

I really thought the video format would be an easier way of getting the information out there but I’ve not had the time to edit them. The video about the hat was actually a snippet from the longest journey I’ve had so far which was for work and it was over an hour each way. When I tried to edit it down (while travelling to work on the train) I found far too much of it was me complaining about the 50mph zones on the motorway, the smell of my own farts stinging my eyes and far too much of me scratching various parts of my body.

Also, I’ve been away for a few days so not been able to get some info out which is on one of the videos that I have yet to review. You’ll see lots more (relevant) content from next week. I’ll follow it up with a post on here.

Costs that I’ve already incurred (and I think I’ve mentioned already in one of the videos)

Collection of car from buyer - £260
Tyre (Pirelli P Zero from Black Circles) - £142
Tracking - £42
Internal cubby hinge fix kit - £30 from eBay with instructions
Front reflector - £30 from eBay (new)
Fan belt - £16
Engine hood strut - £30
Air conditioning pipe replacement - £310
Air conditioning re-gas - £60
Front number plate backing - £10 second hand from eBay

Next video will be about how it is to use every day and the quirks about this car in particular.

Been keeping an eye on others for sale and they are still cheap which is good because more people should be able to enjoy them.

Happy to answer any questions

I think I need to separate out what is a Porsche specific cost (i.e. air conditioning pipe), and what is just general car costs like the tyre and tracking
