Toyota Avensis 2.0 vvti T Spirit - My first shed
Discussion
How's the 2.0L VVti on the oil burning front? Not sure if Toyota had solved the terminal engine design fault with respect to the piston rings on that vintage of motor, however the year '06 I recall being borderline.
My old '04 1.8VVti could drink its sump dry within a month of use if left to its own devices. It finally expired and left me on the hard shoulder of the M6 last summer. Pile of scrap, I'll never have another Toyota. The MK3 Mondeo (Ghia) would have been a better option. Hope you're luckier than me anyway.

Update it seems to be a bit better after having left car for a while. Can't hear it while driving but can when engine off and door open. If it stays that way I'm happy.
I've checked oil for first time since getting the car... I didn't look at the level before buying it, only the colour of the oil. Lol turns out it has just below minimum!
Brilliant! This idiot has been running a car with no oil.
Anyway 20 quid worth of oil later and it's now between the minimum and maximum. Took about 1.5 to 2 litres to get it there. I will be keeping an eye on this.

I had a look in my boot today and I have exactly the same thing! Mine however only seems to be on the passenger side.
I'll have a good hunt round at the weekend to see if I can work out how its getting in.
There's no way I'll be paying £74 for a bumper clip either! I've not had wishbone corrosion pointed out when I last had an MOT. I need to get underneath to take a look. The only issue I have had with mine underneath is a ball joint went, which thankfully was an inexpensive repair.
You should definitely try the grease on the clutch pedal. Took two goes to get it to stop on my car and has been fine over two years later.

the lack of history and the multitude of issues that you are experiencing with this car makes me worry that it might be clocked. these are meant to be about as dull and reliable as it gets and yours is full of niggles....purchase price for a high spec avensis with low(ish) miles for year seems very low....maybe worth punting it on, you would likely get your money back.
If this car has a multitude of issues I'd hate to see what you think of mine...
Whats gone wrong:
Squeaky pedal (not an actual issue)
Water in boot (Not an actual issue)
EML on and then easily reset (O2 sensors are cheap, could've simply been a bad reading at that moment)
Oil level low (Show me any avenisis owners that really care that much about checking these things, bar the older blokes)
Doesn't start straight away (Again, not a real issue, probably needs a new battery)
I'm sure the OP did a cheap HPI check or looked at the MOT history, which would tell you instantly if its been clocked.
It's a cheap car that's now 12 years old, these niggles are part of the game.

To be honest I don't feel like I've really had any issues with the car. I don't think I've ever owned a car without a few niggles.
But a warning light or an O2 sensor is just a consumable item on a 12 year old car approaching 100k, I would say for the age of the car all the little niggles are to be expected. The worse "problem" is probably the corrosion on a lower suspension arm, again 12 years old, still able to pass an MOT, not really a big issue.
I've been through mot history and the mileage is fine.
The price I paid was low because I bought from a private seller who in turn bought it from a dealer who had taken it in and sold it px to clear.
Hate to piss on your bonfire, but you have not paid cheap money for this car.But a warning light or an O2 sensor is just a consumable item on a 12 year old car approaching 100k, I would say for the age of the car all the little niggles are to be expected. These things are pretty undesirable and worthless.
How much do you think the dealer gave for it? and you have bought it from a private seller who in turn purchased from a dealer who had taken it in p/x.
It does not sound cheap to me I'm afraid..... Sorry.

For a "car salesman" you don't seem to know much about the market...I think you'd be very hard pressed to find an Avensis in this condition/spec/mileage for £1500, or are you just used to telling people that line when they PX? These things are pretty undesirable and worthless.

You said yourself in your first post, that these have a "retail" of 2k, by retail, you mean from a dealer, for a fully prepared no faults, warranted car, that a dealer would have probably given £500 Max for.
This is a 12 year old Petrol Avensis hatchback with issues, leaks, faults and obviously abused service history.
If you feel that this is a good value for money car, then absolutely fine, I hope you enjoy it, but it is certainly not the bargain of the decade.
The fact that I paid £200 for an admittedly tatty, short MOT estate version proves that.
But regardless, I hope the car serves you well, and sorry if I offended you, didn't mean to.
