Just looking through the thread again, I love this picture:

Looks like the tyre is rolling off the rim!

Yep, I love that pic - a case of too low tyre pressure methinks !

Hi, nice car, I'm just building a Mk2 trackslag - what suspension are you working with?
Hi, at the minute the car runs a mixture of FK coil overs at the front with koni inserts, and yellow koni fixed height t/a shocks at the rear with H&R springs, as the rear coil overs are in need of a rebuild ,so are in the shed!

Also runs with H&R anti roll bars 25mm front and 28mm rear along with increased track using Passat suspension bits on the front and 10mm spacers behind the stub axles.

Changing my pads after Bedford the other day, noticed that the adjusting nuts/spring platforms on my front coil overs have corroded that much to the point that they have started to crumble away! Obviously, if they fail completely it could be bloody dangerous, so need to get it sorted asap.

Looked down the back of the sofa, found 5p and some bum fluff and a couple of old finger nails. Not going to buy a spanking set of coil overs with that, am I?

So needed a much cheaper solution, remembered sometime last year winning a set of new-old-stock Koni yellow sport top adjustable front dampers for £25, on eBay - taking a chance as they were actually Passat fitment, but hey the rest of the front end of the Golf is from a Passat so what the hell... So just been out in the shed and found them, in the boxes marked "GARY SHED" from when we moved last August.. lol! Also 'in stock' I have some VR6 H&R springs, just need some top mounts and fittings to suit and I can get them fitted.

Not as good as a track-biased set of coilies but should be 'ok'

(btw, I already have the rear H&R springs and KONI t/a rear dampers on the car)

Went out on a mission Sat morning to find some VR6 or mk3 plus axle front struts so I can use all the bits to fit the Koni/H&R combo, the local breakers at Twigworth had 'a few mk3s' in for breaking, but once I got there and was looking through the stock of VW struts on the shelf I could only find one that was any use to me, they have a mk3 VR6 in for breaking on Monday, but that's no good to me today, need to get the dodgy corroded coil overs off the car asap!

Phoned a mate who told me of a proper old skool type scrappy nr Cheltenham, went there but they had bugger all, place was full of pikeys and greasy chavs stripping cars lol

So went home and had a think what I could do, came up with a slightly unhinged idea of stripping the coil overs, using coil over springs on the fixed height dampers lol

Again 'in stock' I had some FK front springs from a VR6 coil over kit (thanks Chris). On the koni's they have a plastic sleeve that the base of which fits a 60mm ID spring perfectly :-D So I put the helpers and main springs on, along with the coil over top spring collar and the existing Bonrath top mounts. In the meantime, it pissed of rain, and I was working outside, on the drive mad So, once you're wet, you're wet so I carried on regardless.

Also had time to fit the solid mount from Duff(mk2vr6.com), fits perfectly, very happy with that.

Moment of truth time, will it look like a monster truck when I drop it down off the axle stands??

It sits about an inch higher than before, and it always had a nose down stance. Need to set the geo up, and it's raining, still so can't really report what it drives like.

I tapped one of the coil over adjusting collars with a hammer and it fell apart... So new set up ideal or not, was a good time to get the coil overs off the car.

Great read Gary thumbup

Be interested to see how much it comes out at weight-wise on the corner scales - was a bit of an eye-opener weighing my cars.

All being well I'm going to the 'ring in the mk2 mid July - for one reason or another it hasn't been there since August 04! So looking forward to that!

Since 04 we've taken my gf's mk4 Golf R32 and the last trip was in a mate's stripped out mk1 Golf 16v.

Had too many sets of wheels to get rid of the 4 stud, the track has all been increased as much as using plus axle bits anyway smile
