Get yourself down to a breakers yard and nab the complete assemblies off the back of a MK3 GTI chap. Use MK2 discs and MK3 pads.

Should cost next to nothing and they're nowhere near as troublesome as the notoriously pap originals!

EDIT: Whilst you're at it, get the front brakes too. Early MK3 GTIs had 280mm front stoppers which are far superior to even the 256mm on a 16v MK2. Ibiza Cupra discs (4x100) and any decent pads will do the job + Rallye braided hoses (cheap from German Swedish). The Audi those wheels came off would have had 280s from the factory so clearance is no issue.

so do i just need 280 discs or do i have to change the caliper and carriers as well?

so if i get mk3 gti discs carriers, calipers etc they will bolt straight on?

i like the idea of improving the brakes as i am thinking of track days etc

dude i like the speedlines, didnt realise you could get them in 4x100. You could easily get some wider dishes for on the rear an some spacers on the front and that would look mean as.

Glad your staying away from the big bumpers!!!!! looks really good after a clean, might i suggest some smoked front indicators and side repeaters to fit in with the half smoke rears that you have. Does you car still have the grey pin stripe along the swage line that goes all around the car - difficult to see in pics but imo dark colour golfs look much better without it.

whats with the baloon tires though? 195/45

They were 4x108 but i had them repitched and inserted to 4x100.

never really thought about tyres as my other wheels are 7.5 j so suit the 50's how much does it affect the car running 45's or do i need to just go for something like a 185 to keep a little stretch?

smoked repeaters will be next as well as possible crosshairs.

although i am trying to get the brakes sorted first as i am thinking of traking it very soon when my mate gets his new car.

a 195/45 will look much more low profile on the rim, has the advantage of reducing the roll of the tire on the rim whilst not being overly harsh over bumps. 50s if you are going to track it as you can buy them for 30quid a corner and scrub the $^$*& out of them and not care

195 on a 7.5 wheel will be ok as it will stretch a little, you wouldnt want much wider- even more so if you dont have PAS.

Have fun on the track, my last 16v was my track toy and i had great fun and was able to overtake all manor of what people would consider proper sports cars compared to a gti.... its all about the power to weight. A couple hundred quid on straight through centre section, air filter, rolling road set up with WUR mod should see 160hp, strip the rear half of the interior and get the weight down to sub 900KG and OMG smiles per ££ you are onto a winner!!!!!!!!!!smile

nice car, hate those wheels though (they look lost), and why would you want to "stretch" the tyres, the wider the better for grip levels.

You'll never get 160bhp out of it with those mods. A 2 litre bottom end or ABF conversion will get you up there, though.

Wrong.

Two of my mates run Mk2 16v's in the 750mc Golf Gti series. Both engines were rolling roaded at Stealth. Standard cams, panel air filter, straight through exhaust from manifold and WUR mod. One made 159bhp, other 156bhp.

They both now run Newman cams and are making close to 170bhp.

I really wouldnt bother with changing the brakes around, standard set up is up to the job.

Get some decent discs and pads (Mintex 1144's, Ferrodo DS2500, Pagid), fit some Goodridge braided hoses and use some decent brake fluid.

Cheers all

I will keep 1955015 for the act road wheels and will be using the speedlines as my track wheels with a 50 profle also, i am only using the speedlines due to them being direct bore which i thought would be better than spiggoted wheels on track.

The brakes i will keep the same and just invest in new discs and pads.

I am going to do oil plugs etc in the next week or so as i am looking at doing donnington on the 31st of october as my first outing on track.

with regards to the tuning i already have a stainless system that was on it when i bought it but am looking to take to stealth for a rolling road tune and wur mod etc as soon as funds allow but hopefully it will few up a few ponies for further trak days.

cheers for all comments and advice so far

That's the best thing for 16v's - they do go out of tune, so the first thing is to get them running right, and then they do feel fast! The 2.0 blocks are a great conversion on Mk2s - 8v or 16v. Whisper - definitely the only way to get 160hpwink

just a quick thought on the current tyres, i have read that new tyres are not ideal on track days but i was wondering how many miles / mm's need to be done before they will be ok, i have p6000's on at the moment will they be ok?
