My brother had a 2 door 328i sport in the late 1990s. I'm sure that came with M badges as standard (but just an 'M', as you say) on the doors, but not on the front grille or bootlid. The boot lid badge said 328i.

My friend has a 318 with all the m kit on it and badges, I believe it came as standard as a styling upgrade or something like that. Maybe called the M pack kit?
