Either way. You'd of thought the car had been travelling at 60plus from the state of it. Not less than half that.
If he had been carrying any passengers, they would of all been dead.

For anyone to consider these, for a first car or otherwise, is mad.
Had two of these still alive 8 years on, i must be one of the lucky few to walk away from these cars that cause instant death wink

I have seen saxo's clio's ect that have been smashed up that bad you would never no what kind of car it was to start with same can be said for most cars in his budget that life. far and few between them TBH

Well I have a Corsa C and im pretty happy with it. 100% reliability for me thus far, good MPG, good dealers (most of the time) and the insurance isn't too bad. Mine's a 1.2 Twinport, so its got a bit of power without your insurer going nuts. Keep away from SRi's, you will not get insured. Maybe something like this one: http://pistonheads.com/sales/1780898.htm or http://pistonheads.com/sales/1744622.htm

Otherwise, maybe an old Mini? Peugeot 206? Renault Clio? There's a lot out there

If you want power, a Peugeot 306 D-turbo will probably get you the most power, to be insurable at your age (ins group 5?)

£1200 http://pistonheads.com/sales/1765948.htm

Or....A Peugeot 106 1.1, not the 1.0 as the 1.1 is considerably faster. Light, cracking handling, cheap to buy/run/fix/insure. Bags more 'fun' to drive than a similar age fiesta IMO (especially fiestas with the old HCS engines, ancient design).

Failing that, a Citroen Ax is the pretty much the same car but even cheaper to run/insure. It is very flimsy though.

Get something:

Cheap to buy
Cheap to insure
Cheap to tax
Cheap to run
Reliable
Cheap to smash up because at some point it will happen.

Everything's cheap to smash up. It's fixing it that becomes expensive

Anything than a Corsa. Garbage. Micra's are not a bad choice. I used one as a winter hack for 2-3 years, never serviced, never checked the oil and thrashed it daily on my 100 mile commute. They are tough too, last year a friend had a head on with a truck in France and although the car was unrecognisable and she had pretty severe injuries she survived and is recovering well.
I got my first car back in the late 80's and things were much different then. My friends all had Mexico's and RS2000s- they were just old cars then. My first car was rather special, not only was it cool but I was given it by a family friend. The engine was knackered and his daughter had it painted pink metalic. Luckily I was an apprentice painter and soon had it repainted in it's correct Ermine White with Green stripe. Yup, mk1 Lotus Cortina! First car. Free!! Sadly I didn't have the money or the skill to fix the motor so ended up swapping it for a cooking 1600 crossflow. Oh the shame.

Have you considered an older, less popular car?
May help with insurance.

have you tried adding your parents onto the premium?

Paying in 1 lump sum annually is often cheaper than paying per month. So pay annually if you can

Play around with the voluntary excess and see if it helps (ie between 300 - 750)

go for a 'non typical young drivers car' hatches are seen by insurers to be driven by fools so attract higher quotes. Try to find some low insurance group saloons and you might get a lower quote

put a low annual milage down as your estimate. I know youll want to do what i did for the 1st 6 months and just drive EVERYWHERE but obviously lower miles = lower risk. try between 4000 and 8000 anually to see if it makes any difference.

Be a named driver on the policy. I'm aware of the legal implications of 'fronting' but sometimes its the only way...

My advice is to get a list of cars in insurance group 1 - 5 and play around with ones you like until you can find something you can afford to insure.

Insurance groups don't mean that much - a Saxo may well be a low group, but look at the number of 17 year old males who right them off into bus stops... and then you understand why when you present a 17 year old male on a Saxo the quote comes back quite high.

You want to find the "odd" car that few people go for - even something unimaginative like an Astra or Mondeo will cost you very very little extra over a 106 / Saxo etc.

Something that would come out cheap would be something like a Volvo 340 or 460... very few 17 year olds right those off!

Insurance will pretty much dictate what you can or cant buy - it'll be a minimum of £1k if not £2k if you end up with a tarted up Saxo...

Whatever you get on insurance, just look at the good side - there's others that pay £2000+ for insurance. As I'm paying £3084 on a 04 plate Corsa 1.0 Active on 3rd party fire and theft.

Crazy...I was 17 a few years ago and heard of maybe 1 or 2 stories of £2000+ insurance quotes at that age, but never £3k!

Think mine was about 900 quid on a Pug 106, which was crippling enough! You must have real driving commitment to pay 3 grand to drive a car with about as much power as a hairdryer! smile

Well I think I did fairly well for a first car...

3.0 Straight 6, 205bhp, rear wheel drive, totally reliable, cost less to insure than buy (£2000 to buy, £1200 to insure at 17, TPFT)

And for all the Volvo bashing, it was a 1995 960 (before Mr Clarkson's promotion of the marque as a first car)... The handling was "shonky", but good practice, and could actually overtake in safety. I dare say you could easily buy a realllly good one and insure it for your budget. And it is a whole lot more car than a Polo or Corsa.

Or maybe a 9000 2.3 LPT, but probably the turbo would kill the insurance (despite being fairly slow)

the corsa appeals to be because it is easy to style in the way i want, ive been told that the are good solid cars. The mini does appeal but it is the saftey aspect that worries me. Im only going for an engine size upto 1.2, i think. Cheers
