Had a play round with the sensors and fuses etc today, couldnt stop the engine light coming on so will get it scanned in a diagnostic machine on Monday.

However, just bought a couple of these of ebay today as the originals have faded and look ste: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...

In the meantime I have been searching for a cheap helmet for trackday use, I still have a major itch to take the MG on one, told my mate about it, and he very kindly gave me one of his many bike helmets:

Right well,

was approaching a large roundabout in Liverpool in the pouring rain the other day, speed limit for the road is 40, as I slowed I looked and was doing 30, roundabout was clear so I carried on around, was nearly around the roundabout just about to straighten up when the back end went, in my panic i let off the throttle and the car started fishtailing like mad, and I ended up bouncing over the kerb, heading straight towards brand new cars lined up at a renault dealership. "oh st" was the thought going through my head, but luckily I was saved by a small barrier which stopped me from hitting the cars but damaged my car.

My bumper needs filling, a respray, new indicator, remounting and I also buckled the drivers side wheel pretty badly, but luckily I had a full size spare alloy lying about. cost me 300 in total including a new barrier for the garage but could have been a lot worse so I am lucky.

Worst part of it is that my dads had a bit of a moan saying I must have been speeding but surely I would of understeered?? And I was only following the traffic there was a van in front of me FFS! the only thing i did differently was cut the roundabout and take a straight a line as possible. He reckons I must have been doing 60, which is impossible in the dry!

The guys at the garage said that diesel tankers use that roundabout to get to the marina to fill boats up, and lots of diesel spill at that roundabout and on the surrounding roads, which are quite bad for accidents

Looks like a trackday will be the least of my worries for now, car should be sorted by Sunday

My step son had An Astra nothing special
he span it twice in the wet
a new pair of rear tyres fixed the problem
the old ones weren't badly worn (just rubbish I guess)
maybe worth a look
he wasn't speeding either as the second time I was in a car behind.

I mentioned this to my dad as well but he rebuffed it.

I have a wanli and a federal on the back of the ZR. (yes i know, but cant afford to replace just yet)

They are hard wearing but my god they are terrible tyres for grip, noise, etc

My dad put Linglongs on his golf and wondered why it understeered at >15mph on roundabouts

Even my girlfriend who doesnt drive knows how bad they are the first thing she suggested after the crash was the rear tyres!

Well your little mishap costs you £300 which would have paid for four decent tyres with some ease - and it could've been a lot worse so I guess you'll agree having left them on was a bit of a false economy? smile

Of course I knew, but with my current finances Id have had to have lent the money off my other half, and she wouldnt have got the whole false economy thing. Rather spend it on shoes or whatever they like these days. I took a gamble and it didnt pay off, never mind, thats life, c'est la vie etc etc

Just to point out, they won't let you use a bike helmet on a track-day (I don't think). Though the level of protection is superior on a bike helmet, they don't conform to the car motorsport requirements for some reason or another.

Unfortunately.

Hmmm I did wonder about that, as a motorbike crash is usually completely different to a car crash

I was told they dont usually check so will hire one out if they dont accept mine

I think it's something to do with fire resistance. If you come off a bike, it's not likely you're on fire. If you come off in a car, there's a chance that it might be.

When I got alloys for my old car, I ended up with a Ling-Long and a Wanli at the rear... first roundabout I came to in the damp, nice and slow, eased of as I "apexed" it and suddenly the back just comes loose.

Wasn't pushing or going that fast at all, but just came out totally unprovoked. Same happened a little way down the road too... New tyres instantly fixed it.
