Panic buying a pandemic Ferrari
Discussion
Hi Jack
Congratulations! I watched your videos after seeing a link in the Ferrari Classics thread.
Not quite the same league of bravado, but I too bought a Ferrari (360 Spider F1) without seeing it, after getting a bit bored in the lockdown!
You have a stunningly beautiful car at a bargin price. Bloody well done!
Edited for stupid typos

If tweaking the choke mechanism and the idle jet have sorted the misfire, fair play to you Jack.
It's strange how some cars fight you every inch of the way, whereas others just respond to every thing you do, in the way you hope they should. I put the Influenzo in the latter camp by the way !! Keep it up, and I hope all goes well with sorting the car's other ailments

New video is up everyone. And the one coming next week is belter. The InfluEnzo tried to kill me a couple of days ago...
CAR Magazine have put up launch write up, mentioning the single pipe exhaust, by Mel Nichols:

That's a great find. Thanks !! https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/ferrari/...
Watched it last night, very enjoyable. Also quite interesting to learn more about the inner workings of the carb (proper wheeler dealer stuff!).
The car definitely sounds much better and that low RPM with a high gear is usually a good test.
Its crazy to think that a garage couldn't track down that issue for what is something quite obvious really (when looking at it). I know they perhaps would have tried the idle screw but surely you'd notice it's not wound in like the other side. Anyway, top work all round!
Really looking forward to seeing the 205 GTI!

This is great thanks!! And really useful as I was also wondering why it sounded slightly muted! https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/ferrari/...
Car sounds much better after the carb balance.
308/328 exhaust systems come up on ebay from time to time. You'd have to look at the parts diags to check interchangeability i.e whether something like a 308QV system might fit.
Re the cooling system - 308 systems were always marginal so it wouldn't like sitting there idling for a long period like that, especially if the fans were inoperative. Could be your system would benefit from being flushed out though.
It only let go once you turned it off. Engine in the back, rad at the front, no more water circulation, big heat sink, boils over. If it was going to do anything while running then you'd have seen a bit of steam start to come from the overflow, it wouldn't have blown off that quickly so I don't think you were in too much danger of being poached!
The expansion tank cap may be old/weak though. A lot of the earlier cars had 0.9 bar caps on them. I think they moved them all to 1 bar so worth getting/carrying a spare & always keep half an eye on the temperature gauge anyway.
The whistling noise doesn't sound like anything major but there's lots of things it could be. If the tensioner bearings were replaced then, as you say, its unlikely to be those. The cam drive pulleys have both inner & outer bearings. The outers *can* fail but its pretty unusual. Could be something like an alternator bearing (a pig to get to) but if it was some kind of bearing issue I'd have thought you'd hear it whatever the throttle opening.
Some of these engines just make funny noises anyway - things like oil cooler pipes resonating for example.

Simply loving the videos jack and those Pajama bottoms .
So relating to the latest video and that weird whistling noise you hear under hard acceleration, I am pretty sure that’s normal on carbs like these as I have heard other cars running carbs making this weird intake noise under full throttle ,to my mechanic ears is nothing that makes me go ah balls

Enjoying the videos.
As Wombat3 said, the cooling on Ferrari rear engined V8s isn’t that great at the best of times. If I got stuck in traffic on a warm day I’d always find my eye was on the temperature gauge, hoping to get moving and some air flowing before it all overheats.
Congrats on the 1.9 Gti, love it in Miami Blue. How about ‘the Bleugeot’ or perhaps ‘Flupug’.
