I wave spanners/welders/paint cans the lot and I've never been more firmly in the fk it off down the road camp. The wife will like another car that doesn't bring her to tears. It's not a cool/classic/rare or anything remotely interesting car that couldn't be replaced with something else she will love and move on from the pain and cost (financial/time/emotional) of this one.
Have you diagnosed it then? Bit hasty off a cut out & no crank with no locked crank. Let they guy puzzle it out & then make a conclusion. It's under a week from a new lump, jeez!Just wondering if you are aware of the previous 100 pages of "Don't worry, it'll come good", "You are nearly there" as it lurches from 1 breakdown/disaster to the next and brings his wife to tears? For an ultimately boring/run of the mill car that can be replicated/replaced at the drop of a hat with something that doesn't cause any of the above..

My view is it's wrong to assume that the latest problem is a straw breaking a camel's back. It may be a grenaded engine, but it may be a loose wire, You don't know & neither do I, we'll find out when we find out.

Maybe so, but that is how we have ended up 100 pages deep into this and at some point you have to say enough. Escy's resilience is admirable, but ultimately it's a car that is known for having issues, and this one seems to be cursed with them. If it was an interesting 2nd/3rd car you would stick it on the naughty step and come back to it perhaps, but this is supposed to be dependable daily transport.

A camel's back will however break when the final straw is added. What will it be next week? These also have a growing reputation for some sort of very expensive steering rack failure (I can't recall the details but it came up when I was looking for one myself). Same as the Velar which is on the same platform I think.I had a car a long time ago which broke down about once a week. Kept having to fix it. Almost cost me a relationship at the time because I was always working on that instead of spending time with her.

Escy - fingers crossed for you mate.
Mrs Escy - you must be the most patient wife.
She was crying this morning.Mrs Escy - you must be the most patient wife.
Also, I wouldn't want my Mrs out and about in something that could let her down whilst she was out alone. It's had one too many chances for me.
Caveat - just my views based on our situation - I wouldn't be judgmental on anyone else with a different standpoint and/or with different circumstances

Assuming you have the funds at the drop of that hat.
Even the 7k WBAC has offered would get him something very decent to replace it in the current market.Similar cars are about £13-£14k retail. The OP is in for £16.5k
Selling it for £7k is an almighty kick in the nuts. I'd probably try and get 5 figures for it privately.

It's a mass produced modern SUV thing.. You could probably go out and buy the same thing on the used market tomorrow. I don't believe it is the wife's dream car, it's just a car she liked driving when it works.

That's more or less repetition of your last post. I don't really have enough of a dog in the fight to pursue this much further & don't speak for anyone except myself but I know I have rebuilt dead cars - driving around in one now as it happens - and if you're into that stuff, it hits different. You might see a bang average & unreliable SUV, someone else a challenge to win. Oh and all mass produced cars are meant to be reliable daily transport but no one's ever come up with a bullet proof platform far as I know.

Well, it seemed you had a weird definition of run of the mill.. You assume I haven't built/run about in cars. I have. For over 20yrs, I've had breakdowns/recoveries/borrowing cars to get to work. I'd still call it a day on this one. Sometimes it just doesn't work out, and you seem to be ignoring the massive impact it's having on Escy, and almost more importantly in this case, his wife.Oh and all mass produced cars are meant to be reliable daily transport but no one's ever come up with a bullet proof platform far as I know.
No, no one has, but some are better than others, and you get good and Friday afternoon cars..
I’m with Ecsy on this one. The car has clearly become an emotional rollercoaster for both him and his wife. However frustrating, *if* the car can be made reliable *then* the feeling of triumphing over adversity will be significant. Ecsy has already admitted he doesn’t feel great about what this has all cost him; crystallising a loss of 50% of the total outlay isn’t going to feel better.
I’ve just refreshed our “tip run car” - an old 2004 HDI Peugeot Partner. Bought for £600 before lockdown, it has been abused senseless. I’ve just treated it to new strut top bushes and bearings, front springs, front wishbones, drop links, a track rod, new alternator, new auxiliary drive pulley and belt, replacement injector hoses, and various other bits. I’m planning an exchange rear axle, a new MAF and fresh brakes. Could I have replaced the whole car with another eBay special for that money? Of course. But then I wouldn’t have a mostly-refreshed car; I’d have another unknown abused snotter Short of a whole new engine or a new shell, there’s little left to replace!
Once this disaster is over, Ecsy will have a spares engine (if not sold on), a *lot* of experience in how to overhaul these lumps (which counts for a lot in keeping future bills sane), and an otherwise a nice car.
But then I also own Land Rover products, so I know what masochism feels like

I can relate to that, my o/h had a Renault that was always below average reliability, then one day it broke when I was driving it and I had that thought. It was autumn, the car felt fragile, and I'd be expecting it to suddenly stop with no power, no lights, just around a bend, and the next lorry to plough into it ... so I decided I couldn't live with it.Sometimes you just know when it's time.

Some us just love the pain and enjoy it. I treated my Saab to a full suspension refresh of circa £800 in the tail end of 2020. Come November I blew number 4 piston messing about with an Audi A7 off a roundabout so had a refurbished engine put in at a cost of £1600. Then come M.O.T in February 2021 it failed on rust in the rear inner arches. Come April I had welded it all up and it has since passed another 3 M.O.T's and 20,000 miles no problem. Sometimes you just know when it's time.
All it has had in those 3 years has been routine oil servicing a set of rear pads, plugs and a set of tyres but all par for the course. I did have to retorque the head bolts but they cost £20 for the bolts and a new cylinder head gasket.

This could just be a teething issue for the last engine swap. For all we know after this he could have tens of thousands of easy miles.
At least he has shown the public great consumer advice and to avoid anything with an ingenium engine in it however.
The Ingenium petrol lump is OK, well, no worse than any other modern petrol engineAt least he has shown the public great consumer advice and to avoid anything with an ingenium engine in it however.
Should be spoken as truth at every opportunity.

Me as well, I think a lot of posters are looking at it from a point of view where they couldn’t do anything about it themselves, unlike the Op.
The problem the OP has is he’s letting emotion dictate the shots. I don’t have his skills and commend him but allowing his wife’s emotions “I like the car” has caused the rush purchase of a likely stolen engine, that was incorrect (cowboy sellers). Hassle at work from his boss and of course sunk more money into something that has gone wrong once again and now got the wife in tears. I’m sure it will be a quick fix and a lot of told you so’s and then this thread will reappear in a month or so with it being collected again. Some times you just have to count your losses, chalk it up to experience and move on.
I was heading towards Livingston on the M8 motorway this evening around 7:45pm and there was a black F-Pace sitting on the hard shoulder and a guy out on the grass verge on the phone, when I passed back the other way approx 35 mins later it was getting winched onto the back of a recovery lorry.
Pretty sure the reg was P504 RES but it doesn't show up online.
Anyway, made me think of this thread. Hope it's an easy fix this time Ecsy.
