I keep seeing these pop up but the timing just isn't right.

I'm not paying any car payment at the moment and the thought of £300+ a month for a car again is holding me back.

That said I have that feeling in my water that it is not long before the prices on these are only going to go one way and I'll have missed out on yet another "future classic". They already seem to be holding their cash with low mileage AUC models commanding low £20k. I could put £5k into it but it's still another payment.

I know i'd need to adjust heavily too. Currently, I'm wafting around in a 12-year-old 730d which gathers pace at an alarming rate for the size and weight of it but I know I might as well be comparing apples and churches. I LOVE the BMW S6 engines in whatever form but I've never driven a highly-strung turbocharged version. I've driven M3's etc and a few CSL's but the gearbox technology has moved on so much it just seems to "gel".

The wife has a 2018 JCW Countryan with 8-speed flappy paddle box. The way it moved through the gears is just hilarious.

I'm also put off that they attract some proper knobs. (not directed in any way towards the OP smile) Thankfully they are outweighed by people who know what they are sitting in but if I hear another one with a pops and bangs map I might go mental.

I know they aren't quiet to start with and I'd purposely look for one with the optional exhaust but the one around my way is either broken or set up that way. I followed him at civil speeds (<30mph) and every time he came off the throttle it just make a racket. I'm getting old, aren't I!

I would also want one with the optional M Diff, they are lively in anything but dry weather as it is and I do like a nice diff that just helps sort things out without me messing myself or putting it through a hedge backward.

I need to but one, I really do but I'm having a proper heart / head moment that at the moment is level pegging with their justifications.

They’re good little cars and no offence taken! hehe

They do unfortunately attract knobheads, but so do its competitors...Golf R, Audi S3, Mercedes A45. Even things further up the food chain attract these sort too. I’m not too fussed about what others think...I had a vRS for four years previously despite everyone taking the piss out if it.

Mine doesn’t make too much noise given it has a PPF. It’ll pop a d bang a bit in sport / sport + but it’s still pretty subtle, especially compared to those will silly exhausts fitted.

I’m tempted by an M car in the future but having had this from new, the previous owners and their treatment of the car does sorry me slightly.

Thre is a leap of faith, that's for sure. I used to be in the "it's approved used by the dealer, so I'm worrying about thing" - but the more I read the more know it's just a tick in the box for most items (service history, verified mileage, recalls etc.) They can then "justify" a 7% premium because it's now certified AUC.

I now but on history and condition with a little bit or risk factor built in. My current 7 series has been faultless other than maintenance. It was bought from an independent dealer with no bullst attached, in fact t's the 2nd 7 I've bought from him and you and both were bought by just being realistic.

Your car looks immaculate, I'm not a fan of white cars but it's purely personal. The problem now becoming apparent is that the young 'uns with a few quid have their sights firmly set on 500bhp but having never experienced it men's the number will dwindle while the price increases. I suppose that eaves some cracking engines to be shoehorned into crazy things biggrin

What's next on the list of mods / things to do? I guess with the weather and roads being so crap you'll spend lots of tie with the TC light on smile

Thanks, I do tend to keep on top of the cleaning etc.

Next up is some Bilstein B8 dampers. They seem to be s popular upgrade and a decent improvement on the stock BMW ones, particularly on the rear. I quite fancy some Bola wheels next summer too; light and sensible cash. Torn between the FLB’s and FLE’s.

Traction isn’t too bad at the moment, but brand new rear tyres are helping with that. Looking forward to some better weather and some road trips.

Had one of these up until 6 weeks ago when it had to go as needed funds to upsize. What a great car they are. I didn’t mind the smaller interior, actually quite liked it. I very rarely had people in the rear seats so that didn’t matter. Happily owner the car for 4 years and the Mrs was still scared to floor it at the end. I think this car is one of those cases where it’s putting out better performance than factory suggests. I didn’t fettle with mine, I liked it stock but I’ve kept up with m3s & 4s, amgs etc upto around 70-80mph when they’re massive power takes over. All round I think they’re fantastic cars and offer excellent performance per ££ when compared to their rivals. You’ll never get bored of the engine note either. The only thing I would say is the exhaust rattle!! This is a common fault on these cars and bmw don’t like to fix it.

Unless things have changed dramatically I think the Bola range is very slim pickings for stuff in proper offsets that let you run wider than 245s at the rear. Given how traction limited the 140i is even in unmodified form, I'd be looking at 255s or even 265s (which are a squeeze but can be done with the right wheel).

Apex very nearly tempted me to part with cash for a staggered set of EC-7 wheels but £/$ exchange rates ruined that.

They seem to be ok judging by what others are running on BabyBMW. Although the FLB’s seem to need a 3mm spacer in the front to clear the damper. Money is sensible too.

I’d really like some BBS CH-R’s but they’re too rich for me. Apex wheels are nice.

Very nice choice of car and colour. I wanted a white M135i, but could not find one with the options I wanted. Ended up with a grey one, with every option I wanted and only 12k on the clock

I admire your enthusiasm for cleaning, in this weather its so difficult. Mine had its 1st clean yesterday....... since August

Thanks.

They grey ones are nice and the silver mirrors / canards actually work on them.

I’m sad enough to keep it clean even at this time of year although it’s easier now I’m not commuting every day.

Excellent read on your 140i experience. I looked at these back in 2016 just as they were being released. Tried a few dealer approved 135i's at the time. In the end I went for a 340i Touring. Extra space for transporting the bikes around. Still have it to this day. Mine has the full carbon interior package like you have fitted. The only other modification is black kidney grills.

Reading your updates have inspried a few more changes. I've been unable to find the details of 'Integrated Vehicle Solutions'. I would be interested in a similar update for mine. Could you send me their details?

Thanks

Thanks.

A 340 touring would be peachy and better for lugging the dog, child and bikes around but hey ho. I like the carbon trim; the textured finish is different.

Apologies the company who did my car play are called Vehicle Installation Solutions. Based in Sutton Coldfield.

I’ve had the car 19 months now and it continues to pretty much do what I want / need it to.

It had its first service on Friday which seemed to go well enough (no issues with the oil filter or housing like on many B58’s). Only snag is, I’m about a month behind on where I need to be with the service pack to get the second, expensive service included. I’m hoping that a few this summer (NC500, Elan Valley again etc) will make a dent in it. I’m spending a lot less time sat in the motorway with cruise control on which seems to mean the service indicator ticks down quicker.

The car reckons I’ll need rear pads in 8,000 miles which seems a tad soon so we’ll have to see what happens there.

Today, I finally got around to cleaning my car. It’s been a few weeks and after the snow, road salt and flood water it was hanging. It was tar spot central so I had to nuke the sides and rear bumper with Car Pro Trix. It was too cold to fanny about waving it, so I just checked a generous coat of Pyramid Car Care quick detailer in (looks great and leaves a lovely, smooth finish). That should tied me over until March and a proper detail. I’m thinking about applying a ceramic coat this year.

My Chineseium exhaust tips were looking a bit worse to wear too. They really don’t appreciate the road salt so after it was cleaned, I finally fitted my new Cobra Sport tips. These are stainless steel and have had generous outings of a high temperature paste was so I’m hoping they’ll last a bit better. I really like them and unlike the stock tips, they don’t look lost in the Reiger diffuser.

And a few clean car pictures...

Cheers both, I really like the new tips.

It wasn’t clean before I started, it was bloody minging after two weeks of snow, road salt and flooded country lanes.

Ignore the pads indicator. Mine has been sat at 3200 miles for about 10000 miles. Every time I have a look there is still loads of life in the pads.

I’m up to 40000 now and they will need doing soon though. Decision is do I go BMW oem (textar I believe) or maybe something different.

I’m loathed to pay BMW prices if they are just a textar pad with a BMW logo stuck on it.

I’ve heard that, so it’ll be interesting to see.

Batteries are the same; the BMW ones are a rebadged Varta.

Not sure what I’ll do when it comes to replacement, will see how much BMW want to shaft me for the pads. Will also see how much they are from Williams Performance.

Replaced my battery last week (5 years old) with a varta one and then used bimmercode to recode it. Dead easy.
