Outrageous! I hope, and indeed fully anticipate you'll do better than that!

I believe the plugs are usually somewhere around 80k, so you've done well! Ive already preemptively done the gearbox filter and oil on the service at the beginning of the month. With the service history not being as fully documented as I'd like (i have stamps, but im missing a couple of invoices), I decided to get it done for my own peace of mind.
The interval stated for plugs on the official service schedule for the 5.0 XK/XKR was 105k miles or ten years, whichever comes sooner. I did mine at 12 years/59k miles and they looked fine but Jaguar changed the heat grade on plugs some years after they introduced the 5 litre engines so I wanted to be sure it was running on the new ones and that the plugs weren't seized into the head. Also it was lockdown and I couldn't really drive the car so I busied myself with other things.

Tax - yes it's scandalous but unfortunately there's nothing very much (legal) we can do about it...

Servicing costs I thought were fairly reasonable, even at main dealers - most now honour Jaguar's 3+ fixed price servicing scheme where cars over 3 years get a fairly modest, fixed service cost. I seem to recall an A (minor) service was a little under £300 and the B (major) service was about £350. Any competent garage can do it though, there's nothing really weird or unusual about these cars, just so long as they use the correct oil it's not too costly. I serviced my last one myself the last two years I had it.

Happy New Year everyone.

For those interested, I could not get the insurance any lower, one quote was £4K!

First job of the year has turned out not to be the steering wheel or the headlining but the near side rear wheel bearing. It’s quiet grumbling in the background over the previous week or so had become obvious. Now, trying to get this sorted over the festive season proved impossible, so it had to wait until today.

While exploring where the noise was coming from, I had a good look under the rear and noticed something astonishing. On the underside of the rear subframe (the bit facing down towards the road, water, mud etc) are a pair of multi plugs and associated wiring.
They are totally exposed. I shall have to think of a cunning plan to change this.

Happy New year Lance, glad you've been able to get the wheel bearing sorted. I wonder what the plugs are supposed to be for? Does your car have the electronic exhaust valves, that's about all i can bring to mind that could be in that area.

It has the valves exhaust and the electronic diff. One of them in situ. The other is the same but on the other side.

A mile stone has been reached.

Not much else to report. A wheel bearing has been replaced, the headlining has not (yet).

The car is however a YouTube star. Number 27, for anyone interested.

So you've put almost 30k miles on since buying in Nov '21? Great stuff.

Hopefully that’s worked.

Yes, I have done 30k in two years. This is my daily driver, so there’s 50 miles or so for the commute and I’m never upset if I have to take it somewhere else. To be honest, if it weren’t for the need for extra seats or boot space sometimes (when my wife’s Evoque is used) I would use it even more.

I even loaded it up last week when we moved house, it turns out that you can fit 2 sets of bedding on the back seats biggrin

Great to see it being driven, Lance. I must say I felt Jack was a little unskilled with how he handled your car. I think I'd be a little aggrieved that someone who knew so little about the operation of the car (unaware that Jaguar separated Sports Dynamic on the suspension and the gearbox for driver preference) felt it perfectly appropriate to turn off DSC in a car before giving it "the big 'un". Considering the gulf in performance between your 5.0 R and his 4.2 n/a that felt like something of a bold choice on a damp road. The chap is hardly Ben Collins.

I enjoyed the video-your car looked and sounded fantastic Lance
I did laugh at the comparison to a 997(yes at ten grand more and well over 100bhp less, and the ever present lottery of bore score!)
My Cayman S was written off last year, and I really would love an XKR, but I’m getting an early classic mini insteadlaugh

Keep looking at these, and the F Type, and this video does make me wonder, dpen say 8 grand and get a tidy 4.2, spend 18 and get an XKR or go crazy and get a F Type R ?

They all seem to attract £695 VED, so may as well get caught for a sheep as a lamb as they say, insurance is £500 for me, same as modified Fiesta ST.

Am thinking they all do sort of mid late teens knocking about, and up to 30 on a run ?

I drive my 4.2 XK quite gently and i get about 34mpg on a run. Always fill her up with E5 though, no E10 for my Jag. If you've been considering it, and you genuinely have the means to run it (not just buy it) I can't think of another car that gives you so much for such a reasonable outlay. I paid £12k for mine, with 58k miles, FSH, and in the colour I wanted (had to compromise on interior). The first thing I did when I bought it was spent another £960 on new tyres as the previous owner had decided that inspite of the 300BHP it delivers, the car should have Acelra Phi on the rear and some 10 year old Bridgestone on the front. So it got a full set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S. I've since spent about another £4k on getting the service items and a few "soon to be MOT problems" fixed (gearbox oil, serpentine belt and all fours brake hoses, pads and discs all round plus all four calipers refurbished and painted).

The result is a car i have total confidence in, not just to run well but to behave how it should even in terrible weather. A trip to Le Mans last year was dispatched as if it was a run out to the shops, no drama, no fuss, just unrelenting coverage of distance in the grand style worthy of a true GT.

Buy one, they're bloody brilliant.

I pick up this 2012 XKR convertible next week. Can't get to collect it any quicker due to work and other commitments so it's a painful wait but very excited to say the least. It is a thing of beauty and will hopefully fill the void that my TVR left but in a more user friendly way.

Yeah, wouldnt buy anything like that unless I knew I could cover it, cant be much more than my Fiesta thats had thousands in mods, plus the normal maintenance.

Had a V8 Merc for a couple of years and that wasnt too bad.

I tend to average low 20s with a mixture of driving, I did get it up to 30 once on a run down the M4, town driving is not your friend.
By all accounts it is a very different beast to the F Type which is more sports car, less GT. It’s also at least half the price.
Having it filmed was an interesting experience. I drove Jack’s n/a 4.2 to the location and it was me behind the wheel for the drive by shots of mine.
They are very different cars and I’m very happy with mine.
A few points of note. It was a reasonably hurried affair, he wanted to get it filmed before his car left him and I was in the middle of moving house, so he didn’t get as long as he might have otherwise done.
The roads around ‘Harry’s corners’ were ridiculously slippery, which was unfortunate. There was genuinely no traction in places and it was spinning wheels at low speeds. Annoyingly, by the time I drove home the roads were warmer and dryer.
Similar throttle applications in the 4.2 did had nowhere near the same effect.

Lance,
Congratulations on your milestone mileage. I can't say I'm surprised, mine passed 211,000 earlier last week, and is just too good still to consider getting something else. So, you should get many more miles and smiles out of yours for years to come. I'm in my 11th year. It will undoubtedly outlast me. Believe it or not, I could part with my gorgeous De Tomaso Pantera which I've owned for 30 years given the right monetary incentive, but nothing could pry my XKR out of my hands. I hope you've enjoyed yours as much as I have mine.

Time for a brief update.

This is not one of the happy ones. The aircon has decided to have a holiday. Took it in earlier and had it regassed, so that’s not the issue.

The controls, fan, temp etc all work it’s just the actual air con that’s stopped. Fuse is fine but so far I cannot find the relay. At least now I know what I’m doing this weekend.

Other than that, I’m still enjoying it.

When mine went it was the condensor, blew coldish for a couple of hours after regassing then stopped again. Relatively easy fix, bumper off / replace with aftermarket orignal was a right mess. about 300 at a local specialist. No problems since.
