I don't want to derail your thread OP so this will be the last thing I post about autodoc, unless you ask about my experience.

This thread contains a number of disgruntled PHers who have had far worse experiences than I have with autodoc, including many posts about parts switching. People will usually tell anyone who will listen about bad experiences and good experiences are taken for granted, so there are happy customers out there, including those on this thread. But my experience is broadly similar to those on this thread and that's enough to make me look elsewhere:

Thank you. I sometimes feel I'm just posting for my own benefit/record but good to know there is some interest out there.
Plenty of interest from me, I'm far more interested in reading about cars like yours than the latest supercar that I'll never be able to afford or relate to.

same here, especially as I did my own P38 restoration over 15 years ago now and I still have a soft spot for the old beasts

I do agree with you John - in so so far as they're absolutely not my first port of call. If ECP, Halfords, other local retailers, even ebay if a "trusted" shop have it, I'll usually start there. Autodoc are also slower. But the cam chain tensioners for an Audi V8 engine - pretty much autodoc is the only place you can get the good Vaico ones - the ebay ones are chinese tat. So there are parts for my Audi that I can only get a good named brand such as Bremi, from them. Especially since Audi have gone NLA on many parts.

There are a few tricks I have found that help:

1. I never order based on reg or VIN. I do the legwork myself and order based on part number only. Even better, if I can order based on the manufacturers part number rather than the OEM part number. But OEM is good to. I find this is important for credibility - even in any local parts stores - if I give them the part number, they know you know what you need.
2. I always choose the named brand I want for the order - which is usually not the cheapest.
3. Only order if it's shown in stock.
4. But even then - sometimes an item is in a different warehouse - so they switch the brand. For this one - which IS annoying since they usually switch you down rather than up - I just keep an eye on the order lines in case I see any changes. The one time they did switch - I just mailed them and said "Oi, that's what I ordered, that's what I want. They switched it back and in that case, it added a few days to the lead time until that item came from their other warehouse.

So not saying they're amazing - but just that when you're hunting for the right part at the right price, all options need to be considered.

Have to admit, didn't like them at all at first - but they are really growing on me.
Saw loads over the weekend at FOS (in the car park and on display) and it struck me how sensitive these are to spec. Some looked amazing but some looked really awkward.

Maybe that it what has grown on me - I've seen some nicely specced ones. I also think the 110 wheelbase suits it better than 90.

Wow, blown away by the interest. Thank you.

Just called the supplier showing 3 Bosch in stock online. They have one Bosch in stock banghead but should be able to get another in a couple of days. Said they'll check and call me back.

Place your bets on whether I get that call.

In other news, the key has JUST arrived and I'm about to go and try and synch it and see if it works.

Watch this space... oh you are. Thank you smile

Update:

The key works woohoo Both manually and electronically

Strange how a simple thing like remote central locking working can make you happy. We take it for granted these days but it's really a great invention.

Engine turns over too.

A relief after having to use the EKA since I got it.

Also, got a call back from Opie oils who say their supplier can supply the extra one so they can supply me with a pair of Bosch coil packs woohoo As an added bonus applied a 10% discount as they have a sale on at the moment (which I didn't know about) so very pleased with that. Thank you Opie and CRNW (Les) for the working key.

It will be mid next week before the coil packs arrive but I'm OK with that. I still have doors to hang (progressing slowly).

Rimmers have always served me well. Ring up, they know who I am and my cars and always get the right parts.

Coil packs arrived today.

I had a job interview around lunchtime so was prepping this morning.

This afternoon had a trip to Axminster tools to buy a new circular saw blade and ended up with a few extra bits.

When I got back it was too late to start on the door hanging so decided it would be a good idea to fit the coil packs.

Getting them on and off is a pig of a job.

Both forearms are torn to pieces and look much worse in real life than in the pic. They are gonna be sore tomorrow.

The bracket looked a bit scabby

So it got a clean up and coat of "Cold Galvanising" courtesy of Screwfix

And then reassembled with new coil packs and further torture installing them.

Finished it about 9.30 and took it for a quick spin.

Back up to 8 cylinders woohoo

Love the updates.

I miss mine, not the fuel economy, but the V8 woffleyness and general air of late Austin/Rover the permeates these.

A very relaxing & well crafted vehicle, almost impossible to be stressed driving one.

The only reason I like my defender V8 is the 4 litre motor in it. Without that I would have no interest in it.

That’s the thing. It’s difficult to quantify but it’s definitely a great feeling being in a Range Rover.

I took Nelson up to the local car meet we run last night and parked him nose in so I could perch on the tail gate.

A liitle later I'd closed the tail gate and was chatting to someone a bit away from the Strange Rover and a young woman walked over to it, looked at the badge on the back and burst out laughing. - Mission accomplished biggrin

Yeah. A whole 1.3 miles each way.

Mind you, I took it to Screwfix today to pick up a track saw. That's almost 2 miles each way.

It's currently showing an average of over 9 MPG !!!!!
