It's currently showing an average of over 9 MPG !!!!!

And that’s why I sold mine!

L405 does 28 on short journeys & 36 on a run.
In fairness most of that is the result of it being run on the drive and shuffled around.

The fact it's on gas (72.7p/l) means it's effectively 2.5 times the MPG so 23 smile

My defender with the same motor on petrol has never ever achieved 20mpg - and that's with me friggin around on the fuel map as much as I can too.
I think it's theoretically possible on a motorway run at 55 - but always I'm either short of time, or towing, or something.
Would be nice to actually achieve it one time "just because" though.

Am actually thinking about adding an overdrive. Although partially because 3 gear sticks and 20 forward gears does hold some appeal - again "just because"

I always run a ‘fill to fill’ mpg comparison my cars because it’s a decent early warning of anything not right if the fuel economy takes a dip it means something is up.

On this basis I never got better than 18mpg on my P38.
Which is an achievement when the XJ-S V12 best was 21!

As someone who's in the process of buying a an older Land Rover product with a thirsty petrol, I'm really enjoying living vicariously through this thread.

Been quiet as I've been working and hanging doors in my spare time.

I did use Nelson to get to work a couple of days last week(about 2.5 miles each way) but the aircon doesn't work and been too hot to travel in a greenhouse without aircon over the weekend so it has remained parked.

Ran well to work and back but the rear suspension does seem a wee bit harsh

Managed to take the RR out for a bit of a longer spin today

Did about 20 miles and actually managed to get it up to a heady 12MPG but then I was enjoying the mighty roar of the V8 (and the rattle of the loose cat but not quite so much).

Mrs TT hasn't driven it yet and said she finds it difficult climbing in and out so probably won't become her everyday car as planned.

Quick update although not that much to report.

I've done a bit of running about in the Strange Rover and now up to a heady 13mph indicated!!!!

I've put the radio into a local specialist to get an estimate to repair it.

I've ordered the second rear propshaft UJ and if I can get them fitted by 25th then we should be able to take it on a trip that will add a few hundred miles onto the odometer.

Not my mug or my pic but saw it and thought "How apt!"

Tonight I took the Strange Rover to the country pub where we held the last car meet to speak to the Lanlord.

It was reluctant to start and stalled twice and then the gas kicked in and it ran better. Until the gas decided it didn't want to play and I got lots of flashy lights. The it decided to play on the way back, then it didn't, then it did. confused

On the way back I was chucking it about a bit on a country lane and the exhaust note changed to an angry growl. As I got near home there was a loud clank followed by a tinkling noise. Reversed, stopped car in middle of (country) road, hazards on, so nobody would hit the rather large piece of exhaust, threw piece of exhaust in boot, got abuse from idiot coming around corner too quickly and nearly hitting the large Range Rover with bright headlights and hazards on, and continued home

Went in the garage and checked on the TVR. The battery is left on a maintenance charger and the battery and charger were so hot I couldn't touch them - seems like the regulator in the charger may have gone for a Burton and taken the (Odyssey PC925) battery with it. Ho hum.

If the Tiv won't start tomorrow I'll have to order a replacement battery.

Taking the 15 year old IS250 Lexus up to the old country for a couple of days tomorrow so won't be able to do anything on the cars until Sunday.

That's a shame to hear, but not exactly unexpected of cars of this age. I might be overreacting, but I've always given cars with LPG a wide berth.

Not only do you lose a boot or spare wheel to a massive tank (often badly installed), but it always makes me wonder how much of a cheapskate the previous owner was.

Hope you get to the bottom of it.

Exhaust back on, propshaft off, all bar one of the old UJ's pressed out. Vice broken (No3 record) in the process.

Will have to pop to a garage and get the other one pressed out this week then rebuild and refit.

I've always had a soft spot for the P38 and really wouldn't mind one.

Then I started reading this thread and thought, nah, I don't think I have the time and effort for one.

There's a P38 parked round the corner with FOR SALE in the window.

I'm going to look at it tomorrow.

Thanks TT.

They're very simple things.

Dead easy to work on

Economical.

Fast

Easy to squeeze down narrow lanes

Reliable

No known issues whatsoever

The boot is big enough to carry a pig if you find one that's just landed.

Good luck & have fun

It's lovely and shiny, so that must mean it's fine, right?

Yeah, and those grooves must mean great traction off the line, especially as they are diagonal...
