Thank you! Perhaps I will have a poke around and see how access is and if it is painful, leave it until I get the belt done ...
Possibly stupid question - would it be a bad idea to replace the easy to replace front plugs and not replace the rear plugs if I find it too utterly painful...?

And the knock is gone! Mildly ashamed to say I initially installed them backwards...
but realised before I put the wheels back on (mainly because of the awful creak it made when I turned the wheel for access
).
Also the top nut on the driver side was an utter pain. The ring spanner tightened it most of the way but was then wedged in. I managed to yank it free but realised it wasn't tight enough. Then I couldn't get the ring spanner back on! Used the angle grinder to create this which got it a little tighter but probably still not as tight as it should be.

Funny thing was getting them off was quite straightforward. And then installing was easy too, but you can't get a ring spanner off and on once they're tight. Managed to get it off but couldn't get it back on. The tip is apparently to cut a length off the thread before installation. If I'd did that it would be very easy. Know for next time...

I know you probably know this already, but when using an impact driver always make sure you stop before it's tight, then torque them with a torque wrench properly to the right value.

I caused almost exactly the same damage by making contact with a telegraph pole in a car park. Fortunately most of it polished off bar a few bits of chipped paint new the edge of the wheel arch. I considered myself lucky to get away as lightly as I did especially as the car was only 2 months old - then I scraped the same area down a low brick wall a couple of months later !
What did you polish it with? Initial thought was T Cut but I know it is quite aggressive so wonder if it risks making the paint in the treated area look dull compared to the rest of the car.Maybe I could justify the purchase of an orbital polisher...

If you get close you can still see some scratches and once it is clean I suspect it will be quite obvious where I have polished versus where I haven't. I had to use the tool quite aggressively to get it all off. But better than it was before! Bit of t cut scratch magic on the deep gouges on wheel arch and bob is your auntie.

Looks a lot like my Rover 75 only I paid 400 for it. It came with the dreaded 1.8 K series engine (don't even buy one, the head gaskets explode) which if well maintained and serviced doesn't happen. Also have a Mk2 facelift with 48k miles I bought for 700 and currently Sorn.
They are just bloody good comfortable cars, the MK1 has more Rover-ness than the facelift with less of the Project Drive cost cutting nonsense.

It is a very competent car especially for the money I paid. Very thirsty of the performance (or lack thereof) on offer...managed to get my screen working and it showed 19.2 mpg average They are just bloody good comfortable cars, the MK1 has more Rover-ness than the facelift with less of the Project Drive cost cutting nonsense.

Thinking of getting one of these but not clear how they install. If it was plug and play to the cd changer cable it would be brilliant. But really don't want to take apart the dash to install. Definitely would introduce rattles...
