But you have a fabric roof right? That stops rain and keeps heat in tongue out

I know, it was a bad call which I regretted almost as soon as I left...

What's with the hard top though?!
It was forecast to rain and it was a bit chilly! Turned out to be neither....
This is why I don't like hardtops. They completely remove the flexibility of getting the roof down at a moment's notice.

I ran a 2.5 986 on M030 suspension for 3 years from 2000 to 2003. I loved it and yes it will still ridicule many current and pricey performance cars on lateral grip / traction alone.

I loved the HT as the 2.5 hood is very thin (and has a plastic screen) for winter and the HT gives you the benefits of a Coupe, heated rear window etc...

Yes, I feel the same way regarding your first comment - it feels like it can out corner and out brake most other 'fast' cars and to be honest, I find the straight line speed is still conpetitive after 20 years so get bamboozled when people say they're slow. No, they're not the fastest but I cannot bring myself to say it is slow.

Regarding the hood, it is very nice to have in winter months or for a long motorway jaunt as it transforms refinement.

Apologies if you do go as I have a terrible memory but the monthly PH meet at Crosshands is this Sunday if you want to pop along, we meet at the big bite car park (excuse for a breakfast!)
Weather looks ok this weekend too.

They are not underpowered, they're overchassied.

I'm probably missing out here but the bork factor really does put me off. Terrifies me, in fact.

Wouldn't touch one without a good warranty.

These things have the potential to go from a £5k car to a £10k car in short order, without the residuals to match - IMO.

You want an iron clad warranty on a model of car that 12 years at youngest and 20 at oldest? You're destined to miss out forever in that case!

Yep, I don't disagree with you.

Residuals being what they are, I don't think it's a risk worth taking.

Did you notice the bit in my post above re it being "IMO"?

Yeah, that.

Understandable opinions from you both. My beef is that the 2.5, whilst seen as the poor choice, is actually more likely the safer bet, given the dreaded IMS is much less of a problem and I can't see how 'slow' is a reasonable argument for singling the 2.5 given how close it is (on paper) to the 2.7 in performance. Why not buy cheaper, enjoy better reliability, near identical handling traits and live with it being 0.2 seconds slower to 60??!

Btw, my costs after 9 months and 4000 miles have been: oil change and two rear tyres totalling £270. And it's £165 on a classic car insurance policy.

Regard it as a £10k car that you can buy for half price as it may warrant later expenditure.

But surely at £5k, they're just disposable.

We meet a JCT 47 services around 08:45 to convoy down or if that's a little too early some head straight to the big bite for about 09:30 - 10:00
Previous cars have been Aventadors, Gallardos, R8s, F40 and also a host of Porsches, Morgan three wheelers, TVRs etc.

With the nice weather they should be breaking cover too.

You can say this about most second hand cars to varying degrees. That's the beauty of second hand cars as the entry point becomes lower but sure you have to spend on maintenance. Loads of people have 10+ year old Porsche, M cars, AMG and none will have the running cost of a nearly new white goods car.

OK a bit of an exaggeration - what I meant to say is : based on a decent (although probably not representative) stats on boxa.net, you probably have less than 1% chance of your 2.5 engine exploding, particularly if it's past 60k, which most have. So is such a risk of losing a £5k asset that "terrifying" ? Would it be life changing (albeit unpleasant) ? Surely not as life changing as discovering the delights of such a great car, as abundantly demonstrated in this thread. But I guess it is indeed a matter of opinion and we all have varying attitudes to risk. You don't know what you're missing though, but at least you help keep values low ;-).

Worth bearing in mind that there is a scrap value for these. I was offered £3.5K as a scrap value for my 2001 3.2S when it had a cracked cylinder head. It was a toss up for me whether to scrap or fix based on the scrap price versus cost to repair the engine. It was only the fact I'd already spent a stack of time and money getting everything else sorted that swung it in favour of 'fix'.
