It's only wax Ross! Any bolt will just go straight through it. I don't think you will be crabbing down the road. biggrin

As an aside, a friend of mine has just had agreement from Mercedes to replace the rear subframe on a 200,000 mile, 13 year old E-Class under warranty!

More weary about getting it over the bushes etc than anything else!

Only just caught up with this and didn't realise you were on the spend again Ross!

I wonder if there's much difference between Dynax UB and UC beyond the latter being clear? I used the latter on the rust patches on the tailgate on my E91. Ground back to metal, painted with Hydrate 80 and then topped with UC. It sets like candle wax

I found myself eyeing up Spanish E91 rear subframes on ebay a month or so back!

Not sure there's much difference between UB and UC. I've done the underneath of my Alfa in UC as I wanted the clear coat.

S-50 is the bad boy! Very dark brown and has a weird creeping/self healing property. Good for oil rigs and Land Rovers, but you wouldn't want it anywhere presentable. (Would be OK on an old BMW subframe though...)!

Any idea how long Dynax UB should last?

In other news, with the cold and damp weather the headlights have fogged up again, especially the driver's side. I'm doing about 200-250 miles this weekend in it, but then I won't need the car for about 2 weeks - I think I'll then get it booked in after that I think, bit before the top mounts are due but they'll be in before the work is done. That way the lights definitely get done before they shut down for Christmas. I don't want to go back again and have the lights sorted..... Just want it all done at once.

Lights still pretty bad last time despite over 120 miles driving last night, although it was raining for the last 25 miles or so.

Just can't wait to get them done now! The car is going to be absolutely mega.

Not sure about anyone else but just occasionally (frequently) peruse the classifieds thinking "ooh I wouldn't mind one of those" then last night driving the M3 I was like "nope, I absolutely love this thing" biggrin

Not owned a car for this long where I still REALLY like it. Plenty quick enough for me the throttle response is ridiculous, especially if you're sat at 5-6k ready for an overtake.... Flex your toe and it just goes! Engine sounds better than just about anything around these days save possibly a GT Porsche, V10 Lambo or V12 Ferrari. Whilst it's no 2 seater sports car, that's the beauty of it..... Having 4 doors, a decent boot and half decent back seats is great. Great all-round car for me.

If it’s not disturbed it should last a very long time (not scientific). You might need to redo it after installation, but after that just keep an eye on it. But I wouldn’t worry about it either. The new subframe would last 12+ years anyway!

My driver's side headlight today frown passenger side similar but not as bad. Worth removing the top covers to let them breathe? I doubt they'd dry out unless I use a hair dryer to be honest. I'm away this weekend so no access to do such.

When i had the run in with the large puddle/lake in the c63 i just left the back bulb cover off for a few days. It cleared it up a treat. With all the undertrays etc these days theres not much water gets in the eng bay.

I'll be driving around 120 miles tomorrow and I think it's going to rain, so I'd rather not drive with the covers off just in case, and I don't think leaving them for 24 hours will do much.

I'll just wait until I get the chance to do it with a hair dryer - probably Monday.

Got any silica gel packs to hand Ross? Could always tape a few of them in to soak up the moisture...

I have some at home, but with the design of the light it's. Not feasible really. You can JUST about tape one small one on the inside of the top plastic cover, but it's a push to then get the cover to click into place. If you put the gel pack in the headlight assembly then it'd be blocking the beam (and with the heat, a potential fire risk?).

Ah fair enough... Wasn't sure how much room there'd be inside the cap. I had to do this on my previous F01 but the depth of the cap was more than enough for 2 silica bags taped in well etc...

Apparently with the F10/11 5 series there's a big issue with them and condensation/water build up.

Yup; poor design as there's a 'well' at the bottom of them. Same on the F01/same headlights more or less...

Once dried out it's generally fine, more so with the silica gel bags; but if not dried out properly; that little well can hold a lot of water and it's a sod to get rid of. Some folk drill into it; issue is when the headlights hot and starts to cool down, it draws in cooler, moist air etc and the headlight can condense even more, as it takes ages to pool etc

I know someone in the States smoke tested theirs (YT video) and he sealed where the smoke came out of; but it still condensed after that...!

So there has been a spanner in the works.....

Driving home yesterday, maybe 20 miles into a 100 mile drive the EML came on. No error message on idrive and the car was driving absolutely fine. I drove back gently. Stopping and restarting later made no difference. Plugged a Carly scanner into it and looks like an ignition coil is on its way on cylinder 1.

So.... Garage actually collecting the car today to take back, diagnose it and remove the headlights to be sent off.

Wednesday they'll collect all of the new parts to fit. It will mean that I won't have the car until at least 7th/8th December when the top mounts have arrived and been fitted. I've asked BMW to change the delivery address to the garage now.

Bit of a pain but what it does mean is that if they encounter any issues/missing bits etc with the suspension/subframe job they've a better chance of getting the bits in before any Christmas breaks.

Coil packs aren't too expensive at all, maybe £60. I'm inclined to just change the bad one. If another goes faulty, I would then do all remaining 7 but the others may go on for a long time yet.

Back when I had an E36 M3 15+ years ago, 'the thing to do' was drill several holes in the plastic covers that go over the backs of (I believe) the bulb holders on the rear of the headlamps. Sorted the condensation out and never had the issue again over a further 3 years of ownership - was a well-trodden path at the time, is this no longer a thing on newer cars?
