It is interesting to see your perspective on this hobby. I had my cars stolen over 10 years ago now, 22 in all from a garage that I owned. From the Police investigation the gang had tracked a specific car that I had and then planted a person in the cleaning company we used to gain access to the building, alarms etc.
They had arrived with 2 truck car trailers and 2 vans. Although trackers were fitted to most of the cars all this meant was that they eventually saw the place that they moved the cars to containers under a bypass. Thereby making the alarms and trackers useless.
They were all long gone into Russia by the time the Police had tracked the plates of the Trucks - all stolen, surprise, surprise.
Some were recovered, the 911 in Estonia and the RS6 in Lithuinia, it is a lengthy process as the insurance company really want it to be a scam.
I found it harder on my family more than myself. My wife having an accident thinking she is being followed. Locking herself in the car until the police arrived. It was all a bit stressful.
But for me having the cars off site meant that there was a physical/mental separation to all this. My cars are now at a new location on a road that is not on the way to anywhere. I even clean my own bog now!
I don't have an instagram, youtube and facebook is years out of date. We still use the cars for the Make a wish and they get loaned out to others through a production company for those who do social media.
Gradually I am getting back into public events as I find sharing the cars with others is the bit that I enjoy. I can still hide under the auspice of being the employee of the guy who owns the car, or the surprisingly clean flatbed driver when I drop the car off for a shoot. As most people are nice
I think this, and Pete's experience is why so many car collectors are quite secretive. For all the posters on here excited to hear about the latest purchase there are so many jealous pricks and thieves out there. They had arrived with 2 truck car trailers and 2 vans. Although trackers were fitted to most of the cars all this meant was that they eventually saw the place that they moved the cars to containers under a bypass. Thereby making the alarms and trackers useless.

I currently own a Fiesta ST and I am a bit reticent about mentioning that on Facebook as it worries my wife as she knows they are a theft risk and that's only worth pennies compared to one of the options on a Pete type car.
Its a shame as we love hearing about the collection and Pete likes to share, but I would completely understand if he never posted again after that experience.
I saw a few comments on Facebook on car groups regarding the fire from supposed car enthusiasts and some of them were almost gleeful, reading that and if you ever find yourself in the Daily Mail comments section make you realise there are some sad, twisted, bitter, jealous bds out there. I think people think that if you have money, all your problems go away, and they don't, some do but you get new ones and some are just part of being human.
Reading these threads have made me think that it must be nice having a fleet of cars like that but am happy to live it vicariously, sounds great but hard work.

I couldn't be arsed in the slightest with the amount of attention Pete gets, although, the flipside is that he does use the attention positively though, so there's that.

You only have to break down in a reasonably nice car to witness the level of jealousy in the UK.Shnozz said:

Yep. I got a flat in an Aventador a few years back (no spare and gunk didn't work) and the number of people who drove past honking the horns and shouting 'wker' amd worse was ridiculous. Such jealousy and it wasn't even my car Beefmeister said:

People only see the shiny thing, not how you got it, nor your other struggles, at the end of the day its a car and life isnt always fair in much bigger ways.
I remember getting a load of abuse off complete strangers for using a mobile phone in the early days of mobiles !
Hmmm ok, this thread has gone a bit sideways haha.
I keep my cars in a private location, always have done. Unfortunately for me, from what I was told from the insurance company and other sources. The place where I kept my car was on a farmers land, something happened with a family member and he tried to set fire to the place in early 2020, then he obviously came back to finish the job off. He tried and failed a second time but came back about 4-5 days later and was successful this time. However I think he didn’t know what he was setting fire to as his first attempt was the farmhouse, which is made of brick or stone!!!!!
Anyways I’ve never worried about this, and never worried about people taking the cars because it’s just something that I can’t control. If someone wants a car, then they’ll get it.
And I’m not being held down from buying and enjoying my cars because of what ‘could’ happen. This is the first insurance claim I’ve ever had, well apart from the DB5!!! Still hurts that one.
As far as people go shouting at me for driving a nice car, yeah it happens from time to time and I find it funny. I look at them, tilt my head and say “Awh bless”. It’s even funnier when they’re giving me the wker sign and then we both pull up at the lights side by side. They always keep their heads down and won’t look at you, until they set off again and they give you the wker sign again. Sometimes I can’t drive from the fact I’m laughing so hard.
Anyway, cars are my life and my life is cars. So I’ll keep doing what I’m doing. In the meantime I start the work on my mew 28 car garage next Friday so that’ll be nice.
And oh yeah, I’ve bought that rhd LFA, got myself a special 812 coming (wink wink) and I might have just bought that F40 from DK’s today if they can budge a bit on the price.
For now here’s a picture of my new garage.

I’m confused. You post says “start work on my garage” next week and then you post a photo. I keep my cars in a private location, always have done. It looks finished no?

I know you don’t really like to talk about it, so pardon my nosiness but if the authorities know who was behind the fire, are they being charged? Is there any comeback, from an insurance perspective?
When the police catch him or he hands himself in then I’ll know more, until then I just have to be patient. It’s gone down as a no fault claim on my insurance but I did have to claim on my own as the Fine Car Store where I had my collection failed to provide certain guarantees to the investigators when asked so their insurance company wouldn’t pay out. Absolutely disgusting, I’m just glad I had my own insurance. Obviously I was always going to have my own insurance because I was driving my cars but there was some cars in there that people didn’t drive and just had them stored there as investments. These unfortunately wouldn’t have been covered if they didn’t have their own insurance, which from what I’m told was quite a lot of people, mainly because they was mis-sold this service by The Fine Car Store.
