An update on the Z4 front discs. They have improved the low speed ride quality on poorly surfaced/poor condition roads. I guess this is due to a reduction in unsprung weight-or I’m imagining it! They look good anyway.
The rears looked a little sorry for themselves so I’ve painted the discs and calipers gun metal grey.

It's a fantastic looking car & sits so well on those wheels
Thanks. As you know-it take a lot of time to get a car to a standard where you are happy with it. But it’s an enjoyable journey. (Managed to get the pic bigger).I’ve got a thing about centre caps!

You might have got second if your centre caps were the right way round

They are always the right way round-self aligning! I’ve got a thing about centre caps!
I hate misaligned badges too. I also always place the locking wheel bolt as close as possible to opposite the valve.

Couldn't cope with them not lining up
Centre cap, inline with the M badge, inline with the OEM BMW M valve caps

Wheel news. I recently damaged a wheel on a poorly surfaced garage forecourt. Amazingly a pothole caused damage to the o/s/f wheel rim. The owner paid for a refurb.
I decided to change the front tyres for Pilot Sport 4S. In comparison to the Contis the grip seems equal, I’ve never had any understeer on this car with any tyres. The ride quality seems slightly better.
Here’s one of my spare fronts with a Conti on:
I do like the 313s.

1st break down in 2 years of ownership! Crankshaft pulley/damper failed. I’d been at the FOS for the day.
I got to my half way point on the way home and turned the engine off. There was a faint whiff of burnt rubber. I hadn’t been driving that fast! I thought it was either an anti social bonfire or the particles of tyre stuck up my nose from the drifters.
When I turned the engine back on the burnt rubber smell retuned and was joined by the alternator light. I had checked the drive belts recently and they were in good condition but original. Based on their age and mileage I’d bought a new pair-which are at home ready to fit. If only I’d predicted a pulley failure.
New pulley ordered from Autodoc and awaiting recovery. On a positive note here’s a FOS pic:
At least the car got me to Goodwood and my ticket was Sunday. I’ve got a week’s leave now too.

I’ve always wanted to go! How was it? Other than the cancelled Saturday.
Least it didn’t ingest the belt. Which is a good thing - I know the petrols are renowned for it.
I’ve been to every FOS apart from two. It’s always a great day out. It’s a way to see a variety of vehicles being driven fast. You can also see static cars/bikes, stroll round the paddock and chat to like minded people. Least it didn’t ingest the belt. Which is a good thing - I know the petrols are renowned for it.
Took the dead pulley off. Amazing to see the condition of the drive belts, both original. They were date stamped 2009 and have covered 119k miles. There were very small minor cracks on the ac belt. There was no visible wear to the main one. Obviously the pulley was dead.
Just waiting on the new pulley and bolts now.

Is that a diesel specific part to dampen the vibration? I'm planning to do belts, idlers and tensioner on mine soon as a preventative maintenance job, and wondering if the crank pulley should be considered as part of that job on a petrol.
Yes, I think it’s more of a diesel issue. Gassing Station | Readers' Cars | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
