A picture sent to me today from the previous owner after it’s first restoration. I think it’s 1990 or 1991

Are you sure the photo was from 1990-91? My car nerdiness see the Nissan MPV in the background which came out i believe earliest 1995 and the MK5 civic again around 1995 on an 'M'

Reason i ask is, I was gauging how long a restored project will last, before you have to do it again. I guess all depends on how it's used and stored. Very nice Jag though

90-91 was a hazardous guess for the year of the photo. Could be 1995 with that m reg car there. Even so a good quarter of a century.
That first restoration didn’t use any modern epoxy primer or cavity wax. It did have many surface costs of paint. No clear coat though. I believe it did live in a warm garage as thats when I bought it back in 2002. It was just starting to show signs of a blister on the rear arch and the rear quarters meeting the sill panels were also blistering in the style line.

It looks in use rather than stored on that drive and from the picture I can see it has a blue tax disc (in a Blue letters on light background with a MM YY layout so that means it can't be pre 93)

As they only used a few colours and changed every year it helps to ID the year (or at least narrow it down)

89 = Blue (Bands of colour - White Date DD MM YY)
90 = Purple (Bands of colour - White Date DD MM YY)
91 = Green (Bands of colour - White Date DD MM YY)
92 = Red (Bands of colour - White Date DD MM YY)
93 = Blue (Early months Bands of colour - White Date DD MM YY, latter months Solid Colour MM YY - Month Bigger than Year)
94 = Purple (Solid Colour Date MM YY - Month bigger than year)
95 = Green (Solid Colour Date MM YY - Month bigger than year)
96 = Red (Solid Colour Date MM YY - Month bigger than year)
97 = Blue (Solid Colour Date MM YY - Month bigger than year)

So Late 93 or 97 would be my guess based on Tax Disc format - if someone else can identify the cars in the background as 95 or newer then it has to be 97 and cannot be 93 IMO

fk how sad is that!!!!!

For the photo detectives, this is the coupe prior to any restoration. What year? smile

Thanks guys hehe

I have to confess the knowledge came about because a while back I was looking thro boxes of old photo prints of car shows and trying to remember what years they were from so I could scan them and share elsewhere - My digital pics have always been stored in folders with event MM YY in the folder name so don't have a problem with those - one picture of crusty Bedford/Opel/Vauxhalls at Billing looks very much the same as another biggrin

The tax disc research at that point really helped for all but the "trailer queens"

Best resource I found for tax discs up to 92 was Here Clicky

The photo isn't good enough to identify the tax disc colour hehe

I was going to write a long post identifying the year by

Explaining that the fountains were de-commission in 1985 - the chap in the white shirt had a gucci man bag that was only sold from 1983 etc etc but I was concerned

1. Someone would take me seriously and believe the complete rubbish posted
2. Someone with better knowledge of fashion would point out I was wrong

So instead I'm just going to say how lovely it is that you have found photos from that far back - would go nicely in the car "scrapbook"

No idea on year, but Blackpool looked quite smart in those days.

That's a great photo - I would hazard a guess on 1984 as the Bull and Deer by Jouve ont he right fountain I believe was renovated in early 80s and only looked this 'clean' afterwards.
