Hoonigan's GT40 Build

Nice!
Don't forget your minimum spacings on the mountings for the brake pipes and take lots of pictures (I'd suggest some with a ruler in shot) so you can prove you conformed to the spacings for IVA.
Hmmmm now where did you get the minimum spacing thing from? I was going by this: Don't forget your minimum spacings on the mountings for the brake pipes and take lots of pictures (I'd suggest some with a ruler in shot) so you can prove you conformed to the spacings for IVA.
It mentions nothing about set distances, am I missing something

Excellent build. Sorry if it has been covered but is this an off the shelf kit and you work to a build manual? Do you have support from the supplier if so?
From the sounds of it he's paid for a bunch of random bits of metal and is slowly cutting, welding, fabricating, grinding, riveting, bending, shaping and polishing them into something that looks like a GT40. To date I have bought lots of my parts from SouthernGT including the chassis, alloy panels, pedal box, fuel tanks, seats, steering column, steering rack and probably more, but then I'm fabricating, adapting and fettling many other parts as well as buying loads of other bits from different/cheaper suppliers.
SouthernGT sell pretty much every thing you need to make the car and all of the parts are very good but like anything it's nice to put your own mark on it, to me the making of these cars is in the detail and workmanship that goes into them and I think (hope) I'm doing ok, there are many way to go about many of the jobs in these cars and sadly there is no build manual available but support from SouthernGT has been amazing even when I'm buying parts from other suppliers, they get 10/10 from me.

Hoonigan,
just letting you know i will be following this thread with great interest. i will have to start a GT40 build thread of my own shortly once things move along some more (body bits are in the shed now)
is there any other GT40 build logs on hear?
Ryan
Excellent, I look forward to seeing it start, I too have a thread on GT40s.com but this is my fave...just letting you know i will be following this thread with great interest. i will have to start a GT40 build thread of my own shortly once things move along some more (body bits are in the shed now)

What are you plans for your car and what make is it? DRB or Roaring Forties maybe?

Saw a new CAV GT40 at Goodwood. Was very very nice quality. A lot of car for £85k.
A kit build like this would be brilliant.
For those interested I think there is a gulf liveried rep for sale - though I think it has a period engine from an original gT40.
Is it the one on ebay for 40k? If so doubt dry much there is an original engine in it for that money!A kit build like this would be brilliant.

Nice pics and looks like a great chassis, is that the same spec as what you are planning to build? The shifter looks nice a similar to the SouthernGT one I will be fitting, rod shift too like this:
I beleive it's an exact copy of the orginal GT40 one made in house as Mick (SGT) is running an original shifter in his own car, any like the one you show incorporates a reverse lockout.

Really liking this project.
Very very tempting if new job works out to look into doing one of these.
Quite a few options re: suppliers, no?
Superperformance, Southern, RCR all have good reputations don't they? CAV product looks good too - though you cannot self build a CAV I think.
All good manufacturers but only Southern GT in the UK, Superformance are in a different league really, 100k cars and are only sold as complete cars minus the engine and transmission, RCR are good and I went out in one the other day but require a fair amount of change/adapting from the supplied kit to pass out IVA test, Tornado is another UK option but not a route I would personally go... Hi Paul,
just been looking at the shifter of Micks that you posted. it certainly does look more like the original than the RF one. Do you have anymore photos of Micks car? I have seen the ones on Southern GTs web site, Just keen to see more.
ive been working on a rotisserie for the front clip at the moment so nothing real exciting.
Ryan
Sorry Ryan the only pics I've seen are the ones on the website too, have you made any chassis decisions yet?just been looking at the shifter of Micks that you posted. it certainly does look more like the original than the RF one. Not too much going on this end either, though I gave fitted my gauges in the dash (though not the dash that will stay in the car as it is a bit warped but good enough for IVA and mock up.
In the process of ordering up a good few parts at the moment for the next phase, so far they are thee flywheel, pulleys, clutch and clutch plate, and a set of roller rockers all required before I can get the engine stripped, dynamically balanced, rebuilt and finally in the car plus the remaining dash switches etc, oh and I have also hopefully tracked down some front suspension parts too so watch this space...
(the steering column has now been shortened to the correct length)

Just found this thread, love the progress, am currently looking at the Southern or the Tornado kits, i know there's a price difference, but i was going for authenticity and an easier build.
I don't think any are particularly easy, that's what Ultima's are for Unfortunatly the Southern GT does not have a manual with it but everyone seems to get along just fine including myself (a complete novice) so don't let it put you off.I did loads of research into both brands and all of it pointed me to the Southern GT, it may be more expensive but that is because you will end up with a much better car, better specced, better handling and as I'm informed with much better customer service! I truly beleive you get what you pay for with these cars...
Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss further

Thanks Paul, appreciated. Hows your build coming along these days?
No worries Slowgress is the word, to be honest money is the main issue, I've been doing some saving and this side of Christmas I should have the front uprights, shocks, springs, suspension arms and bolts etc ready to go so at least the front of the car will look like er, well a car (at last). I have also just got my ignition sorted now, it's all sat on the work bench awaiting me to work out how it works... So behind the scenes things are happening and I will post some pics when I have some bits to show off If your ever down south and want a look and a cuppa just give me a shout.
Well another milestone (sort of) reached tonight, I've finally finished the A/C off, it was a job that I thought would take a day or so that has been dragging on for weeks now. I do still have the -6 fill valve to fit to the bottom hose in the nose area but it is currently MIA in the mess that is my garage! Pretty happy with end result, front suspension next
Cheers for the comments, it finally feels like I'm getting somewhere now, picked up the front arms last week too, just need the uprights which I hope to be here this side of Xmas, and then perhaps the neighbours will stop asking what sort of boat I'm building...
Ryan, the fuel fillers are a bit of a pain as can't be fitted until the body is fitted which I don't want to do until last, for now I will just bring the flexible hose up and out the top ready to be cut down to length later. It's also looking like I will have to move my wiper motor (again) as I have realised the wiper arm gear box actually sit further back that I previously though, bit of a balls up on my part but not the end of the world, however it is getting a little tight for space round there..

Word of help on the air con side. All the pipework, suction side, please insulate it with armaflex , available from any air con suppliers, or you will find condensation dripping on your legs and floors while running it. I would even insulate the rubber hoses, where they are in cavities , to prevent corrosion. All 'normal' cars hoses stay in the engine bay, so and condensation isn't an issue.
Cheers for the advice, I will look into doing it, Am I right in saying it's just the top hose (second pic) that will need doing, making sure I do the union and fill valve too?Well not been up to much lately but have tried my hand at anodising some on the alluminium parts I have, I'm going for most parts being either blue orange to match the body.
All the equipment required cost about £70.00 and should keep me going for ages, I tried an initial test run on a couple of small bits of scrap then went for it with the brake caliper mounts. I'm bloody chuffed with the results and am looking forward to doing more bits as I get them.
Brackets as supplied by Southern GT that definitely did not pass my quality control, though I'm fairly sure you will never be able to see when fitted, but I'll know....
Following a couple of hours on the bench grinder/mop
Then after anodising and dyeing
All done with this set up and about 6 hours of my time...
