Guards Red 996

Interesting, bgunn what was yours like with the pack failing? At the moment mine curiously seems fine without Aircon on, but when you switch the Aircon on it has the occasional miss at higher idle. All revs above idle are fine!
Coil packs aren't too bad really, £36 each today on ECP with the obligatory discount and I'll try and do the spark plugs too. They'll probably have to wait though as sadly my daily is due a big old bill this coming week The 996 is on mild duties until then.

Some more work on the car over the bank holiday weekend, and many happy miles too in that glorious weather (that's now promptly disappeared of course!)
I'm really crap at getting pictures midway through work, but the old girls had the following...
New aux belt
New door panel clips (they were all worse for wear!)
Front brake disks reinstalled the correct way round
While mucking about with the brakes we noticed the hard lines into the calipers were looking past their best, so I think the plans a new set and some braided lines I'm also waiting on a set of engine mounts to finally come into stock and then they'll get done too!
One thing to note, my temperatures got bloody hot on Saturday in traffic until I turned the Aircon on which forces the front fans on. I think theres a relay that controls the low speed on/off for the fans which fails on these fairly often, which might need investigation (or bypassing...)

It's been alright! I've always got a short list of things it needs, but nothing show stopping.
I've just ordered a set of 964 RS engine mounts for it this evening, off of the back of forum recommendations. Should tighten things up at the back, and they were a bargainous £165! It'll be the next DIY task hopefully soon.

So I went round my good friend Matt's (Bullawayo on here!) house today for some more work, and we got the new engine mounts fitted with no problems. As we jacked up the engine to take the load off the mounts, loads of oil poured on the driveway - had a panic something was amiss engine wise, it turns out it was my old engine mount giving up at that exact moment!
The new mounts went in, and they've made it feel a lot better at the back. Much less slop coming on and off the power, and everything just feels a bit more tied down unsurprisingly.
Couple of pictures, including the mount pissing out all of its oil...

Underwhelming update time - I put it on a Dyno to see if we were anywhere near the stock power figure anymore... we're not really.
I went down with some friends in their cars to Surrey rolling road for a bit of a laugh, it was a fun way to start the weekend and an excuse for a drive after though Having looked on the web, most cars do around 270-285hp.
Mine went on the rollers and at first did 240hp, which caused some worry. Then he did a second run and it put out a nice normal 275hp! Then a third run - back to 240hp. The verdict is an intermittent VarioCam (variable valve timing) solenoid, causing the car to not always get the 5.5k rpm lift. You can see this on the Dyno printout below - one line goes up, the other goes down... I'm happy with the power when it's working though, a video on YouTube shows one making exactly that, with 60k on the clock if I recall.
Not the end of the world then, I've emailed my trusted specialist and I'll try and get in over to him next month and bundle in a service at the same time. He's hoping the solenoid will make itself known with an error code, if that's not the case then it'll be down to manual diagnosis. The other thing is my clutch pedal didn't return during a recent drive, but only the once? The fluid was rebled but it since happened again, just once. I'm assuming I've got a leak?
On a happier note, we found an empty stretch of road for pictures and a few drag races which was thoroughly enjoyable.
Hey ho, 21 year old car ownership. I love the car still, and I knew it would come with inevitable snags.

Looking good! Hopefully the solenoid will be an easy fix.
For the clutch it sounds like it'll be the master cylinder with leaky seals, chances are it'll get worse until it finally gives up the ghost. A new one looks like it's about £50, bargain.

Might be worth getting the slave done as well while it's being looked at, but they're a bit pricier at £150ish, easy to change though as it sits on the outside of the gearbox.
That's really cheap for the master cylinder isn't it! The slave was done back in 2017 so hopefully that's not the culprit. The full service is £390 all in, so if the solenoid doesn't break the bank it shouldn't take the shirt from my back. For the clutch it sounds like it'll be the master cylinder with leaky seals, chances are it'll get worse until it finally gives up the ghost. She back!
The car spent a week or two over at Angus' garage, of AMS services in Bedfordshire - as usual, I can't recommend them enough for doing a good job with a reasonable price. Angus knows his 996's well. The summary of whats been done, a full service, a new master cylinder with a fluid refresh of the clutch system and brake system and also 4 new tyres. Angus also tested the VarioCam solenoids while the car was in, and they're actually fine - however my coil packs are a bit knackered potentially giving me issues, so once the weathers dry I'll be fitting replacements.
He's also pointed out which I kind of knew and have been burying my head about, my exhaust needs replacing soon. The backboxes are fine as they've already been done by the PO, and are stainless - however the headers and cross pipes with the cats on are dieing. Not a cheap job on these, and hopefully it can wait until after a house move next year. Anyone know where's the best place to go to source exhaust parts, or if it'll potentially be cheaper to get someone to fabricate them up?
She's running like a beaut now though I had a chance to have a few little races against my daily (a leggy E92 335D, no remap or any of that) on the way home (on a private runway of course), being driven by a mate. I was surprised that the two are exactly the same, I assumed the 35d would trump the 996 in a straight line.
I've heard the same with the manifolds, mine will definitely be a pain - AMS have a jig for it which is good, but I reckon I'm looking at quite a few hours labour. The nice thing is the manifolds are cheap for stainless ones, but the catalyst sections are expensive - I wouldn't mind getting the 200 cel sports ones that do the rounds.
The good news is the clutch is fixed! The master cylinder was just tired and old, so we opted to replace it.

I had the wonderful task of replacing the coilpacks on Monday, not something I want to do again in a hurry. The front-most ones on each side are fine, the middle ones are a bit awkward and the rear ones were awful - access was poor and you have to work around the exhaust on your back...
Done though it took me around 4 hours, including a trip to the shops for some Allen Keys. The old ones that came off were slightly cracked/generally showing their age - so unsurprisingly the car runs quite a lot smoother now! Worth the job.

CornedBeef, I absolutely love this car. It’s a credit to you. If you ever decide to sell it (why would you) then please drop me a pm.
Thank you very much mate! If she's ever up for sale, I'll think to drop you a message first In the meantime, the process of drive it a bit/fix it a bit will continue!Rich135 said:
She looks really great in that colour. I am not sure I love the idea of using a trolley jack on a gravel driveway! Doesn't the trolley like to move forward a bit as the car raises up and the pad moves back?
Keep up the good work and enjoy her.

I agree, its far from ideal! Part of me wants to pave it, purely for working on things - also if you've ever dropped a small tool/bolt on a gravel driveway you'll know my pain.Keep up the good work and enjoy her.

In much happier news, I'm taking the car to the Nurburgring at the end of this month I'm taking my other half who is now insured to help the drive, and going in convoy with 3 other cars! I've not been for a few years so I'm excited and nervous in equal measures - watch this space for the potential drama, but hopefully mostly happy driving.
So I've got the quote back - one of the front to back hard lines had indeed ruptured. The other line is currently looking crusty, so I think I'm going to just get them both replaced entirely - especially with the Nurburgring so close. £420 for the job, as one of the brake lines goes over the gearbox so there's a fair labour bill.
