From the looks of it ,,looks like verrry poor siting of the existing filter.
I always found foam filters to give very poor filtration from fine particles . You really need to keep on top of cleaning filters ,it,ll need cleaning/oiling every couple of months .
Personally stick to k&n filters, never see any fines in the inlet tract using them.
Yes it isn't an ideal position, I hope the carbon airbox and K&N style filter helps. Lots of little jobs but nothing too critical.I always found foam filters to give very poor filtration from fine particles . This looks fantastic. Great buy!
Just out of interest, who did you used to take your hybrid engined 9-5 to? I seem to remember that they were fairly good at fault finding and not too expensive?
Hi Rob, hope you're well. How's your 9-5 running? Are you coming to the next dyno day on December 3rd?Just out of interest, who did you used to take your hybrid engined 9-5 to? I seem to remember that they were fairly good at fault finding and not too expensive?
I took the 9-5 to Tony Wallis at Saab Repairs Doncaster - He really knows his stuff - www.saabrepairsdoncaster.co.uk - And yes he's competitively priced.

Yeah I'm keeping well thank you. How about you?
I won't be around for the dyno day sadly. It's a long way to travel and I've not long had mine on the rolling road. It dumps all it's boost at 3000rpm and barely makes more power than a standard 9-5 so it's certainly not doing what it should. I really need to get it looked at as I truthfully don't know what's wrong with it and sadly I think that Doncaster is probably too far as I'd be looking at a minimum of a 3 hour drive.

I reckon it could be either a broken APC valve or your actuator spring is too strong allowing it to overboost then the ECU pegs back the torque to compensate hence the drop in boost.

Yeah I've taken the car to him and he's unsure too.
APC replaced, wastegate actuator replaced (with correct jade green spring too), MAF replaced, spark plugs replaced, diverter valve replaced, DI pack replaced, head gasket replaced (had a tiny leak but was enough to limit the power drastically. It's improved but still nowhere near where it should be) and I've checked and replaced all the vacuum hoses.
Just fed up with fiddling. I think I may have found a specialist who can help that's about 45mins away but I'm going to ring them back later today to confirm.
I thought your 9-5 made a healthy 290 bhp though? How much were you hoping for, over 300?APC replaced, wastegate actuator replaced (with correct jade green spring too), MAF replaced, spark plugs replaced, diverter valve replaced, DI pack replaced, head gasket replaced (had a tiny leak but was enough to limit the power drastically. Strangely the spluttering has stopped so maybe the DI pack is fine, still a slight oil leak so going to have to get that re-inspected (might head up to mechanic tomorrow) but other than that it's pulling like a champ!
Just realised it's likely to be because the fuel filter looks as old as the car; will get replaced with Fram one tomorrow. As the current dashboard is looking a bit tired, sourced a replacement and given a quick clean. Will next get installed by mechanic as if I did it I'd most certainly break something.
Anyone who finds this thread boring can just close the tab and revert back to whatever else they were doing, it's really that simple.

More pics of tip runs please haha. I have to say I do love the rough and quick as F look. No offence intended when I say rough though.
Agreed, I love the fact it'll scalp a V10 M5 but nobody would notice it, it definitely isn't a head turner especially when dirty. Pure comedy though when it walks the Audi brigade. Never have I seen a car look so small so quickly in the rear view mirror Yeh it gets used for tip runs etc as it's so damn practical! Considering roof bars for my mtb but don't know how much it'll affect aerodynamics.
Car is now for sale because house deposit.

If it doesn't sell then I guess it's going to become my silly second car to complement a Toyota Aygo or Clio dCi.

Quick update - Decided to keep the 9k but take it off the road for the rest of the winter and to do some much needed work to it, which includes:
- Fit cabin filter
- Some welding in the engine bay - part of the intercooler it looks like
- Solve idle issue
- Oil leak has stopped but perhaps remove cam cover to inspect gasket
Have picked up a daily driver.
Going from 20 to 60 mpg should be helpful in saving up for trackdays and further work, bit of a no brainer really.

Following a pretty hectic Christmas period, I've finally got back round to this project.
The 9k has been off the road since early December, when the idle started going all over the place, pulsating from below idle (almost stalling) to 1500 rpm then holding at 4000 rpm.
Not only that but it lost pretty much all boost.
Having taken the car to the mechanic, he diagnosed that it was in fact the inlet manifold that was leakier than a leaky thing; this despite the fact that I had it re-welded only a month prior!
At this point I'd lost patience and as the oil started seeping out again (although not anywhere near as bad as previous), I decided to sell up.
However, as I'd have struggled to sell it with a leaky manifold, I decided to keep it and start planning ahead for my first summer of trackdays.
Recently wheelynutz recommended Dave (Froggy I believe, top bloke!) at Newcastle-Under-Lyme MOT centre as Dave actually worked on the inlet manifold in its original form around 8 years ago.
Dave tested the inlet and found that while it was pretty poorly bent and cracked, the fact it has Jenvey parts meant it was definitely worth saving.
This is now complete and looks much better and is back with mechanic ready for install.
Later this month mechanic will be removing the sump which I will be taking to Dave who will be deepening it to give a baffling effect; an essential modification for track use.
While the sump is off mechanic will be investigating the oil leak - it's possible that the leak was caused by worn-out ancilliaries so that's an engine top-end out jobbie.
Yes it's been a pita but the prospect of getting this thing on track is so enticing. Also there's no pressure to rush with things now I'm running the Aygo as a daily.
Aim for late April is to have the following work complete:
Inlet manifold and new gaskets refitted
Sump deepened and baffled
Oil leak fixed inc. new ancilliaries
Refit cabin filter and sound deadening
Dyno at Street Racers, Leicestershire to compare with 9-5 which was dyno'd at same place. While it's made '430ish at the hub' in the past, i'm led to believe that with the 630cc injectors it's impossible it can make more than 460 at the fly. Be interesting to see anyway.
Trackdays:
Donington
Road trips:
Nürburgring in September
..and chubby good breakdown cover
Later in the year:
Brake work
Install LSD and full gearbox rebuild inc cryo treatment etc.
Install gearbox cooler
